Super stoked to see you take up this interest Hasard!! :D I'm going to say be slightly prepared for a bit of a mission with all the DCS initial setup. BUT ITS WORTH IT! As an owner (and DCS player) on a Macbook Pro 16inch ... I will say that very likely you'll need a new PC for VR playing (there's a lot happening in DCS graphically and you'll need more computer power than a Macbook Pro for VR). Having said that, my MBP16 runs DCS really well with Windows 10 (Boot Camp) and I have a TrackIR (which allows head/helmet movement tracking) - as well as a HOTAS of course. I think having those are the minimum, but will go a long way before you're ready to step up to VR (again, you'll probably need a new PC for that) Feel free to reach out if you need help with Mac setup! Really excited for your coming DCS content! Check this out @ kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4bWXn6dZbKmj8k I mean let's not kid ourselves and call it "realistic" combat... but that's some really friggin' entertaining content if one is into military aviation :) Imagine you piloting with another live RIO (Growling Sidewinder!?) and then doing a content breakdown of the fight and how it relates to real life. I know he'd be overjoyed to interview you! If you're into that, I think people on this channel would LOVE that. (At least I would!) - Especially someone with F35 experience (I know a lot of the details of that part are classified, but just having your general opinion, comparisons with other aircraft and impressions would be enormously appreciated). Anyways, I'm just hyped you're asking about it! Please reach out if you I can help!

There really isn't a good cheap way of doing this. You're going to at least need to purchase a good HOTAS system. I recommend the Thrustmaster Warthog stick and throttle. For VR, I recommend the HP Reverb G2. It's excellent! Get a game seat that has mounts for controllers... If you want rudder pedals, Thrustmaster's TPR is awesome... It's not going to be cheap, but it makes a big difference in the experience...

I'm trying to build/buy one myself right now, and it's close to impossible to find components, especially graphics cards (which are important for VR). If you really want to get one on a budget and have the patience, your best bet is to wait till March. Otherwise you'll have to overspend for basically no reason. Good luck, anyway👍🏼

One question: Why are the AMRAAMs, which weigh 160kg, placed on the wing tips of the F16 and the Sidewinders, which weigh 80kg, on the second outer wing tips? From a physical point of view, you always want to have the weight as close as possible to the centre of gravity, right? So I'm wondering why it's different with the F16. On all other aircraft, e.g. the F18, the sindewinders are always on the very outside. Btw. Great video! I'm glad to hear what a real pilot has to say about DCS.

@Hasard Lee your reaction to the video was Amazing to watch. Seeing your face light up the way it did was awesome. I hope the Sim despite it's flaws and the fact that the F-16 Module is not fully finished yet, still proves impressive and fun. I'm sure it will. the video didn't really show it but they have High-Off-Boresight (HOB) with the Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) with AIM-9X's as well as GBU's, CBU's, they have JADM's but not on the F-16 yet, and the older fashioned Semi-Armor Piercing High Explosive (SAPHE) rounds for the Viper too. I understand why we don't generally use them today, as the HEI-T rounds auto-detonate after 1 kilometer to prevent unintended casualties or something but yeah. I'm curious if you've fired an AIM-9X in training or anything before to test HOB, I know in the sim they can pull absolutely insane maneuvers for the first few seconds of their flight until they reach their max velocity. Watching the missile fire and then pull a U-turn over the wing to hit someone that flew by is really nuts. though you can't target them from that far behind you in the Viper, the delay between lock and firing makes that happen. the delay is simulated well too I Think. Very eager to hear your thoughts. I'll happily just fly, do practice missions, A/G, do a BVR-to-Merge fight assuming it gets there and then some dog-fights with you if you want. I'm waiting on a replacement throttle at the moment, but I should have it in a few weeks. if you don't have a HOTAS setup for PC I recommend the Thrust-master T16000M with the pedals for a starter setup ( it's around $300). If money isn't an issue likely the Warthog setup, I believe the A-10 has the same stick as the F-16, just the throttle is different. you might still want the T16000M pedals to go with it though unless you find some good metal ones. Some people might recommend Track-IR for looking around but I use the Hat switch on the top of the stick personally. They do have the actual F-16C Block 50 control setup as well for various HOTAS setups and some other presets.

Two wild-ass guesses about the top secret stuff they're working on: 1) Seems to me current VTOL is unnecessarily complex because it assumes the craft must stay upright. I think VTOL could be accomplished with an aircraft which launches and lands nose-up using computer controlled small rockets and retracting legs like SpaceX. This idea has been tried before, but without modern tech it wasn't practical. This would require special stairs on a carrier, or the seat or "pilot pod" could pivot or even be removed with robotic arms to make entering and exiting easier. This would also save space on a flight deck. How often does a fighter pilot need to enter or exit the aircraft without a ground crew anyway? Heck, eliminate the traditional landing gear entirely if a runway isn't necessary. 2) A stealthy fighter which can optionally fly as a drone, such that the enemy doesn't know which ones have pilots and which don't. One pilot could command a squadron of drones which look identical to his own aircraft, but can pull faster/sharper turns without a human. And all the pilot/seat/eject system space and weight could be used for other things such as fuel. Thoughts? Don't be too tough on me, I don't claim to be an expert.

I will say - the DCS model feels a little bit too slow. A fully loaded flanker with the works feels the same as the F-16 sometimes in DCS lol.

Ladies and gentlemen, that is a near 50-year-old design you are looking at. The F-16, like the B-52, has truly aged like a fine wine.

I would highly recommend you invest in a decent PC for simming. VR is great but there are still a lot of tactile restrictions in a lot of sims when transitioning from hotas to button mashing. DCS, The new Microsoft Flight Simulator and IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad are great titles that span near-modern military, VFR, IFR GA and commercial flight and then of course your classic World War 2 with a little bit of WWI content. If you ever get a fix for cockpit procedure or a refresher on old airframes you can climb in and refamiliarize instantly without the need for hours of pre and post brief. Beyond that, the simming community has great groups and online squadrons for many of the the current titles that take things pretty serious. It's a great way to learn new airframes and expose yourself to knowledge bases you might not usually get. You could be in a group with a rotary wing pilot from Brazil, or a Taiwanese fighter pilot. It really is a great way to connect and learn. In your case you would be a great knowledge base for others. I hope to see you in the virtual world some day. P.S. If you haven't checked out a title called "VTOL VR", please do. That is probably the once exception to my comment above about VR.

I recommend the RealSimulator FSSB F-16 stick. Yeah, it's more expensive but especially for someone who has lots of time in the real aircraft, I know the floppy gamer-style feel of any other stick will be a letdown for you. The Thrustmaster is actually a good stick, but the FSSB uses force sensors to give you the same kind of stick forces and movement (such as it is in a Viper) for a much more realistic feel. I also am an IRL pilot, though not a fighter pilot, and I'm always in search of flight sim controls that come as close as possible to the real thing so as to add to the immersion. They really do make a gigantic difference. At least for me. Check out realsimulator.com for their stuff. The stick grip is pretty pricey, so if you want to save some money, you can buy the Thrustmaster Viper grip and put it on the realsimulator FSSB base, as it is made to work with the TM stick grip. In fact, that is my Viper stick setup. There is some cool Viper-specific flight sim hardware out there, like ICP's and I know of at least one company working on a nice looking Viper throttle. That would be WinWing. Still in development though, as far as I know. Good luck, and have fun!

When it comes to the F-16 there is for sure another good option which is called Falcon BMS (www.benchmarksims.org) which is based on Falcon 4.0. The development of the "Beast" in BMS is way beyond DCS. Check it out!

The F-16 is the sexiest aircraft known to man... there may be better planes, faster planes, tougher planes, and bigger planes but NONE of them are as sexy as the F-16. Maaaybe the Su-27 comes close.. There are other jets that have a place in my heart for other reasons but with the canopy support behind the pilot instead of infront, the big intake below the cockpit, that big tail cutting through the air... dayum.

Public means non classified, math means you can apply math and “extrapolate” information which is then also public ( math and public )

I took a ride in the A-7K from PGH to Indian Town Gap and was stunned at the feeling of the straffe and how quickly IT WAS GONE! 100% Oxygen all the way back knowing I was on point for cleanup, lol, OPENING that zipper on my right leg just in case, so grateful I made it back without drama SO GRATEFUL the Major put us in the cloud over as that Sun was piercing that canopy big time, (did a Hail Mary and Kissed the tarmac after climbing down, absolutely lying my ass off saying I was just looking for FOD once a fellow Lineman saw me on all fours). Top Gun my ass! Just under 7G, (I think) and I was ready for Admin Duty. I was around Hero’s that day. Only two Aircraft went, both Majors maybe 5’6-5’7 and built like a BSH! It was a thrilling experience as Top Gun only fueled my desire to Fly, but I was absolutely proud to support these Pilots with every Spoiler Door Rigging and every Safety Wire Spun, (such an Artform). Once the A-7’s left and the 112th merged in to the 171st, the 135’s just bored me, lol. Regardless, Pilots deserve the respect from every Freedom Loving American.
