Most species of bats play an important role by helping control nocturnal insect populations, including mosquitoes, moths, and beetles. The mass loss of native populations can result in insect populations jumping. Many moths and beetles can be devastating to crops and forestry when populations jump. Mosquitoes act as disease vectors for both animals and humans. Besides that, If not properly sanitized or taxidermied, dead animal remains can still easily carry disease to a destination country. Bats are one animal known for transmission of rabies. I was honestly surprised that refusal of the boxes even needed review - and I’m guessing it was the apparent quality of preservation that prompted further review.

I used to do courier in Seattle. Sometimes, I would have orders that went up to Vancouver. I got pulled out of a line one night, and despite my complete innocence, you still get nervous. The BC didn't help calm my nerves. Kept asking me if I knew what was in the box. I referred to my BOL. They asked if I packed it. I said no, I had picked it up from the airport in Seattle. Proceeded to tell me that a lot of times, people would use couriers to bring drugs into Canada. Oh, great. The box said it contained computer parts...and I would hope that everyone involved, including the company I worked for, would have their ish together and know it was, indeed, computer parts, because we couriers were not allowed to open the boxes. They went through my entire car with a fine toothed comb, swabbed my steering wheel and gear shifter, made me wait 3 fricken hours! I'm just doing my legit job, and they made me sweat for 3 hours. When they came and told me all was good, they thought the whole thing was funny. I didn't.

Avoid Montreal! I went there twice and have never been treated so rudely by restaurant workers, street performers, hotel employees, and customs. Even had a guy smear food all over my hotel door. Talk to other Canadians and they don’t even like them.

Canadian and American border people are trying to protect their countries. If you haven’t done anything wrong and have been honest filling out declarations and followed the stated border process, you shouldn’t have any problem. My luggage coming from Europe was checked by border people in Toronto, and they were nice, respectful and professional. It was not a bad experience.
