THIS HELPS SO MUCH. I've been so torn between R and TR (esp bc I'm overweight rn, which makes my face look a lot softer) and at the beginning I was nodding along with the Romantics like "yeah, that's sort of like me" and then I saw the TRs and it was *exactly* like me. Some of the outfits and styles easily could have gone in my closet bc those are the same sorts of pieces that seems to flatter me (where as romantic frills look just slightly off). I think limb length is underrated as a tiebreaker. Even when my face looks softer at this higher weight, my arms are way too long and my hands are slightly too big to ever be a Romantic.

Is anyone else confused by the fact that the "real bodies" in the TR category here don't have the smaller waist/hourglass? It makes me keep thinking they have gamine bodies. There were a couple where I could swear they had soft gamine bodies with SG/TR faces - particularly the adorable Audrey tautou lookalike! ... Maybe this is why I need these "real bodies" videos.

Great video as always! For the longest time I thought I was Soft Gamine, but when I wore the suggest garments I still didn’t look quite right. I can definitely pull off A line skirts and broken silhouettes BUT I can not do high neck lines and some of the other suggest top lines because of how busty I am. So, overall I’m more Romantic. But after watching this I’m thinking that I might be theatrical romantic since I can interchange between the two types. My hips are rounded but I don’t have the typical waspish waist that a true romantic has....so I believe that’s my yin undercurrent pulling through. Hence being able to wear A line skirts and other select soft gamine lines.
@SweetTeaElle5 жыл бұрын
Elyssa Hi, Elyssa. I'm Tammy. I'm the first Romantic example. I promise you that my waist is not tiny or waspish!! It IS and always has been, about five or six inches less than my bust and hips. For instance, right now I have about 25-30 pounds too much on my body. I am still 40 x 35 x 40. It's my c-section lower abs at 40-42 inches that always make me look swollen. So, you don't have to have a really small waistline to be a Romantic. Your hair in your picture is very pretty. It suits your face well. Very cute. I wish I could pull this off myself. I tried it out with my Bitmoji avatar, but it just didn't look right. I think my face and cheeks need longer hair, but not super long hair. I am short myself-- 5'2". I thought I could me Soft Gamine. I guess the D-cup chest is the deciding factor, lol!! I have tried some Gamine clothes -- like the higher necklines -- and they do work. At least what I have BOUGHT at Goodwill for $1-2 works. I am learning to choose and then wear more FITTED pieces and those are highly complementary. I haven't seen but your head, but you just might be Romantic. I wasn't for sure on myself. I couldn't decide amongst Soft Gamine, flamboyant Gamine, Soft classic, theatrical romantic and romantic. Merriam figured it out for me. Bless her!!!!! Bless you, too, and have a great day or night!!

I think we all put too much emphasis on specific body parts! I have about a 7” difference between my waist and hips/bust, but I think I’m a soft classic (I have a fair few romantic features, after watching this video, but I look taller overall). It’s really useful to see a wider range of people 🙂

Thank you for the video! My high cheekbones are high enough where I used to be asked if I was part Native American because of the stereotype (I'm not) and I have a classic "Greek" nose, but, other than that, my answers come out as Ds and Es, with a small number of Cs. Knowing the Cs don't count towards my total helped me confirm myself as Romantic. I don't know if the two facial features I mentioned are enough to label me TR, but my body type is definitely Romantic. You clarify so many things in your videos. I appreciate your hard work. So, again, thank you!

OMG I could have written this! Hello Doppelgängerin. I struggle with typing my cheeks and nose; the nose is definitely adding sharpness to my R face but it's hardly the "dainty" sharpness of TR. And I'm still unsure if my cheekbones are "high" or "broad" or if the roundness cancels that out or what. Whatever-- I look best in TR lines, I need to just let the details go.

It's so interesting how even fabrics are important. On the first R, the furry hat looks very feminine. On me, it would look like I was a little boy goin' a huntin' with my pa, despite my yin facial features. It is the fluffiness and the softness of the pink that makes this so-these elements together would bring out my yang bone structure. It just goes to show that it is about how everything comes together. It is definitely true that fittedness at the edges of the clothes look wonderful on Rs and TRs, and of course waist emphasis really brings a look together. It just looks so fresh on each of them. I'm glad you brought up the pixie cut. I recall a blog which said if a person can pull of a pixie cut, she is probably gamine. They used this as proof that Rihanna was SG. But of course, she is TR and, quite honestly, that straightened pixie is my least favorite style on Rihanna. I think the issue is that it creates large triangles around her face; I think she would look lovely with a softer, curly pixie. To return to the TR with the pixie in the video: I think it is to do with the outlines and how my eyes think the hair will feel, as Merriam says in the video elsewhere. When grown out a bit, her bangs are swoopy and add that rounded shape near her face. When cropped quite close, the light, feathery texture of the hair gives this soft look-like kitten fur. The advantage of featuring clients is that we are able to see women of all different types-sizes, races, colors, shapes. With Kibbe's list, we only have celebrities, the majority of which are white and I imagine have quite a bit of pressure to maintain a certain weight and look. I know he typed some black women and a few Asian women, but not nearly enough for my liking. I wanted to say as well that the woman at 14:55 looks just like a silent film star (on the right of the screen). Even the facial expression makes me think so!

@UCPEFhjADZhCJhoVOGw0V-rg I googled "Rihanna asymmetrical bob" and was able to find images of her with a straightened asymmetrical bob and with a curled asymmetrical bob. For me, the curled version of the same cut is better. I googled "Rihanna curly pixie cut" and I absolutely love that style on her! It is because Rihanna's appearance is so dainty and feminine that I don't like those straightened hairstyles made up of large points and angles. They are too severe, in my opinion. (Her pixie with the long fringe is my least favorite and is the hairstyle I was referencing in the first comment.) That said, I found a picture of her with a shortly cropped pixie-her hair straightened-that I really liked. It was similar to the TR's hair here, in that it looked light and feathery. I must agree that she looks wonderful with that curly, caramel hairstyle. In regards to her ethereal nature: I think that is simply her charisma and her showmanship. She is a fabulous performer and she knows how to-or simply does automatically-captivate her audience. I think this can perhaps read as "ethereal".

I think it is beautiful with her eyes, eyeshape, and with her face shape, features, with eveything=) I loved her looking different images, actually...=) I loved her Kids Choice Awards look - circa 2008, if I'm not mistaken... - Where she had deep blue eyeliner/like pencil drawn cat eye, and pink lip. It was something in the vibe with Justin Timberlake. She looks like a Rose I loved everything with red lipstick=) The music videos. It was the style back then!:)) That she embodied=) It was the moment that her career and her name reached the Stardom! Very rich for fashion transformations era. In "Live your life", I guess, she had her fringe slightly curled Yes, I loved her curls , like 3b curl with that cut, I guess, for the Vogue shoot 2014..!:) In white two-piece I think Rihanna does remind a Gamine in some way. She looks beautiful in Cabaret looks, which is credited to Gamines to a large extent Rihanna really is a prominent person with prominent individuality, style... That cat woman vibe... You can check though Instagram another charming lady - Irada Hait. She, if I may say so, a white girl. - Jewish and has some more origin, cultures like that I think she is a real, maybe pure Gamine. Only her features are kinda large, luscious... She looks so beautiful with all those Rihanna cuts! I suggested she wear her hair curly, like Rihanna. But she straightens

@@homeuser8479 Oh, no worries! Than you for letting me know. I'm so glad you appreciate my nit-picking nature; I try to take care to explain my opinions. I can certainly understand your reasoning for liking that style on her, now that you explain. I've noticed that, sometimes, wearing things against our nature actually works well because it accentuates something unique in us. Maybe it brings out our daintiness (like Rihanna), or our yang bone-structure. It can look very chic, you know? I looked for pictures of her blue-eyeliner and pink lipstick and while I think she looks lovely, I definitely prefer her with the red. It looks more harmonious to me, but that might just be because I think every woman looks lovely with a red lip. It could also be because the pink was so bright and cool-toned, and she is warm-toned and medium in shade. She's dark to me, but my cousin would call her a "light-bright", so that's why I say medium. She's light to other black people, but dark to non-black people. I suppose she must have changed her hairstyle a lot, because when I google "Rihanna live your life" I see some images with that sharp pixie, some with a pompadour, and some with...sort of a bowl-cut pixie. I don't know what to call the style, but it's cuter than I make it sound. I'm having trouble finding the Vogue shoot you're talking about (I will continue to look) but I love her look on the March 2014 cover. Irada Hait seems to have yang facial bones, so perhaps that is why her features seem so lush. They contrast, so they bring each other out. Her bones do seem to have this dainty sharpness to them. I only watched a couple music videos and looked at some Instagram pictures though. I think she would suit wavy hairstyles really well.

@@gittevandevelde2208 that is exactly what I thought! I understand that Merriam is a soft gamine herself and that's her thing, but I get more and more frustrated seeing how more yang bodytypes are omitted here...And I dare to say, it's so much more of a challenge to look good as a yang girl than as a yin one! Especially if being a flamboyant natural or dramatic doesn't usually mean being a supermodel.
@gittevandevelde22085 жыл бұрын
@@Hanna-nw8mn Yes, I've been feeling that way too. Every type has been mentioned of course, but some very little. Particularly flamboyant natural (slightly mentioned in the casual outfits for dramatics and naturals video, which is far from difficult for naturals!), while they are the most difficult to dress. I'm very frail and narrow, and my facial features are quite feminine, so I personally never had trouble with that. But looking feminine as a very yang type must be difficult no doubt. Feminine clothes will make you look broader and sharper in contrast, while, well, big broad and man-tailored clothes, aren't exactly 'feminine' a lot of the time and won't do much to make you look stereotypically feminine either. The only way I can imagine to look feminine is going the 'greek/roman godess' way, with very loose wavy, wild hair, and a very flowy long dress. And that isn't always practical... As a dramatic you can still swaddle up in flamboyant natural lines and look daintier in contrast, but as an FN, looking feminine and sophisticated must be difficult. I really hope she'll make a video on those soon. They're, I think the least touched upon.

I also have mostly D answers with some E and C. Aly Art said that mostly D is theatrical romantic but I just couldn’t see myself in that style. Thanks so much!
@merriamstyle5 жыл бұрын
I kind of see it as....D is basically theatrical romantic. But it's not so straightforward and you always have to look at the person as a whole to figure it out. I would suspect, 14 D's and 1 A is TR. But 14 E's and 1 A is not TR....it's R. The A's and B's count for more if you have majority D, and they can create a yang undercurrent much quicker than if there are a lot of E's. Because E's add a *ton* of yin, but D's add just a fair amount. That's how I explain it, I don't know if it's completely 'right' but it's how I tend to think of it. If you have 100% D answers, I suspect this might be TR, but I'm not sure, because I've never seen anyone with 100% D answers!
@pamelavera22475 жыл бұрын
@@merriamstyle Thanks for replying! I had 10 D answers, 4 E and 3 C. If anything, maybe I have more C answers than I thought, but definitely not equal or more than D/E answers. My issue is this: my skin, hair, and lips. I have frizzy hair due to the climate (but it's naturally voluminous and wavy), I have huge pores and mild acne, and lips that are moderately full, sort of wide and round (not long or square), but aren't clearly "defined" like a lot of Romantic types I see (has to due with my overbite). This makes it hard for me to see myself as "Romantic," extreme yin. I don't feel... pretty enough? Can skin and grooming (hair, eyebrows) affect yin/yang balance? I feel like the stereotypes are messing with my head. (For sure not sharp or dramatic enough for Theatrical Romantic).

Hi Merriam, I am finding your videos so useful. I've always loved fashion, but from your work I can understand better why some styles just don't look that great on me - better than when I was simply using colour theory and body shape and "personality" alone to assess what looked good. Now I can look at an item on a hanger and think, "Hmmm... Gamine. probably not." (I'm a tall Natural). I notice that I'm drawn to Dramatic and Gamine styles (probably because we live in an era where fashion is all about "unexpected juxtaposition"- odd combinations, casual worn with formal, clashing patterns and the like - which i do find very exciting). Luckily from your videos, I have hope that I can embrace my Kibbe type and still add a variety of cutting-edge styles into my look - perhaps in smaller doses. you mentioned in another video that Classics can be type-cast as boring, but I think Naturals can also be pigeonholed as "comfy" types, only looking their best in jeans and casual wear. But do I always want to look "relaxed" :)? can Naturals even do a "gala" look? or is haute couture/high fashion not really their scene? I recently looked at pics of Jennifer Aniston (Natural) to try and answer this question, and it seems to me that is is very easy for a Natural to look hefty, or trussed up and constricted, in gala looks. But I did find pics of her in 5 gowns where I think she looks fabulous. Can't wait for you to do a video on Naturals!

Why is it that wide body types look good in lightweight fabrics and draping? (Thinking of romantics and naturals)
@stars-and-clouds5 жыл бұрын
I think that's because tight clothes and dark colours make you looks slimmer in general, kind of in-close your body. So when wide frames wear it, it looks a little disproportionate. It puts more emphasis on how wide they are because it's supposed to make them look narrower. If that makes sense hehe
@rexysmith40295 жыл бұрын
I would also think because tight/hard/ fabric look very constricting on soft voluptuous shapes . on romantics volume comes from flesh/roundness so the flesh would look uncomfortable in hard super tight heavy fabric . For naturals volume comes from wide bones/muscles that look heavy I think thats why they need fabric with a little more weight to it , but still not constricting , To create Harmony with shapes . That was my understanding I might be wrong I am NOT a pro hahahah
@cianap.2815 жыл бұрын
That's interesting to think about. It could be that the warp and weft, and the seams of stiff clothing stretch from side to side and emphasize the vertical and horizontal; while draping creates chaotic diagonal and curved lines that move around. Lightweight fabrics create the same effect even if it's just ripples. Maybe that balances the width. Departing from Kibbe for a minute, from a technical standpoint when you're dealing with curvy bodies it's simply easier to tailor draped clothes than stiff constructed clothes. Think dresses cut on the bias, for example, versus suits. They move with the body and have give. So there is a long 20th century visual history of drapes + curves-- we're used to seeing it and it looks "right." I suppose that doesn't explain why it works on naturals, especially the less curvy ones. Maybe it's the breath of fresh air quality of draping that matches the broad openness of the natural frame, or the kinetic quality of thin fabric that complements the muscular body.

I think, "wide" is a very relative, abstract and a subjective concept. I would see this more from the opposite perspective. - For example, you take a Dramatic, many of the Gamines... The more angularity - the more sharper lines and the more "severe" hints in the design possible. Some naturals(or all can?) look good with some thick textures. Even soft natural? For example, a thicker fabric trench coat, a sweater? If the yin is present - then the softer the lines, the draping. Like for a SD too, for example with their jackets too

Very beautiful, very interesting video, full of beauty! Thank you so much, Merriam! Interesting moment, it was a bit hard to see which type these girls belong to, because when you see the celebs.... - either your eyes get used to certain representatives in the articles as a cliche... Or what they wear - in terms of their type, or not. While in real life, TRs might tend to wear more like SN, Classic, SG clothes To tell the truth, I would want to see a video, besides my request on Gamines and FGs, on SNs!:) I do know how the girls of this body-type look like... But recently I read an article, which said that it is a very tricky, "situational" type. And I pretty much agreed with that.. Some of them can pull off the look of nearby types pretty well Some pretty much exemplary SNs can pull off a TR, and a romantic look, in cases of some... If Scarlett Johansson is a SN, and Aly Art typed Kim K as SN... Then hmm... I'm not seeing that with Kim though. The more glamorously neat, dainty-luscious details, hints Kim has in her look - the better her image gets. So does JLo's. Maybe some people are vice versa - rare TRs, Rs, looking close to SNs, being able to look good in clothes and elements of both types of different groups Some would say JLo has a more squarish body, muscle... She wears her signature glamorous-Natural hair... It is a cliche, but a lot of people, who look Naturals or close, they do a balayage, and wear that hairstyle, some natural curl.. JLo is good with some smokey-eye, which is a natural feature I think very lucky might be the ones, Naturals, who can wear very simple clothes and look "ready"

Does that mean theatrical romantics can get their yang undercurrent from naturals? I always figured your yang had to be strictly answer A features. I am 5'2, curvy, with soft flesh in my upper arms and thighs as well as hips. Blunt shoulders that are slightly sloped between my neck and collar bones, and blunt angled chin, high cheekbones, soft flesh beneath them. Big eyes, full lips, round nose, moderate vertical line, moderate hands and feet, long arms, curvy waist line. When my clothes are too tight and suppress my flesh on my hips I do lose definition and I look more yang. Pure gamine lines bring out my yang. If I wear fitted clothes they accentuates my figure and I look smaller.
@rivkaruthgolan5 жыл бұрын
Is it possible to be a 5'10 theatrical romantic? Soft dramatic seems to be bigger boned, with strongly yang facial features. Soft natural is too blunt with more narrow hips.

Hello 😊 I think it really isnt about the exact height you are, more importantly "the vertical line" appearance, for example I'm 5'9" but I look much shorter than that, when I mention my height people are shocked that "I'm that tall". So its possible to be a 5'10" tr.😊

Thank you so much for this video! Seeing this ladies made me realize I'm a romantic. I'm very small but curvy overall, my waist isn't the smallest and I don't have a very big chest but I always look very soft. Seeing the second lady was very helpful, especially the photo where she was wearing the red dress. The colors, the hair and makeup reminded me of myself, the main difference is just the bust size. I tried the test so many times and always had many Ds and Es (and 1/2 Cs if I'm not wrong!) but I always thought I was somewhat wrong

Great video, thank you so much for all the work you've put into this series! Can't wait for the rest of them. I'm glad you mentioned that an angular jawline could have contributed to the yang undercurrent of one of the TR models. I am a TR. I’m super small and delicate looking, I have a short waist, kinda waspish. I have long legs and arms too though which is why people often think I look taller than I really am. I’m 5’3”. My face looks more romantic and ingenue though. I guess my jawline is slightly tapered and my cheekbones are kinda sharp. My eyes are very rounded and my nose is small but is fleshy at the tip. I have severe body dysmorphia though, so I might be more yang or more yin than I would describe myself at the moment. I saw the gamine video and thought I might be soft gamine, but I definitely am a theatrical romantic. I think gamines are more bigger than me in both facial and body structure?? I don’t know how to describe how I know the difference, I just know that I’m too delicate to be a gamine.

im pretty confused about whether I'm a TR or gamine. Our body type sounds very similar btw! I also have pretty bad body dysmorphia too so i dont think I see myself the way other people do. My sister thinks I'm a gamine but honestly I think it might be because i'm currently underweight right now.

@Merriam Style: I’m having a hard time deciding whether I’m a Romantic or a Theatrical Romantic. Do you have any tips to help me?
@yourneighborhoodfujoshi4 жыл бұрын
I think if you couldn’t describe yourself as “thick”, you’re not a romantic. This includes SN. Or if you can’t take insane amounts of details, as romantic women don’t really need it or could pull it off (for them it’s best if they let their entire body “talk”). I’m finding theatrical romantics can take a LOT of drama. Almost to the extent of dramatics and gamines. Actually they top it. Romantics almost always feel bored with their look not understanding that they’re best sort of “naked”, less is more in this group.
@rebeccasoto95924 жыл бұрын
@@yourneighborhoodfujoshi I think that's good advice, but some romantics are skinny and small boned and short, maybe soft is a better descriptor than thick. Emilia Clarke is a R, even when she's quite slim. I think more small, rounded and frail-boned even if heavier. Rarely "tall", and rarely or barely angular. If you feel that you have some angles you're probably a TR over R. I struggle with this because I have short bones, soft build but have some angles even when overweight. Does anyone else have advice here?
@yourneighborhoodfujoshi4 жыл бұрын
Rebecca Soto That sounds like SG or SD. Likely SD.
@MissGoldenDreams134 жыл бұрын
@Ana Marte @Rebecca Soto : I’m definitely not a Soft Dramatic because I have quite a short vertical line and very few yang features. At this point I’m leaning more towards Theatrical Romantic because while I’m hourglass shaped, I’m still relatively thin and not very lush. As far as Kibbe stereotypes go that’s what turned me away from Soft Gamine- I’m not as girlish and “cutesy”.

My mom and sister now have a pixie cut, but both have natural straight hair (mine is curly). The difference is that my mom is a TR just like me and my sister is a FG, like my dad.
