I have wanted to look at lock picking in video games for such a long time and finally I found some time to script and edit a video together (it took AGES!!!). If you want to see more videos like this, please let me know in the comments, and if you have any video game of film/TV lock picking you would like me to react to/Review, please let me know which ones.

I'm not sure about the scoring system but it was a fun idea. If only a couple of those games hadn't shown the internal workings they could have scored higher than the screwdriver lockpicks but they showed too much and were punished relentlessly... I hate to think how the game designers might have visualised the inside of the lock for the screwdriver videos.

What about in movies and tv shows eg Father Dowling Investigates www.imdb.com/title/tt0096582/An amiable, inquisitive Chicago priest moonlights as a detective and is assisted by a rather worldly, lock-picking nun. I am just glad the video games don't show the correct method

I'm sure somebody has already mentioned it, but in Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion the lockpicking actually had you set your tension and then tap pins up inside the lock. It was a lot more difficult than in Skyrim or even in Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (which is one of my favorite games).

Obvilion's lockpicking is good gameplay-wise because it requires skill and patience from the player, punishes you for mistakes by partially setting back your progress, while at the same time the character's skill level in lockpicking has impact on how easy it is to set pins and how punishing it is to make mistakes. But overall the lock constrution is almost idential to the Thief Simulator pin-based lock shown in the vid. There is only a single pin with spring tension and not a combo of a key/driver pin. And you set this single pin, manually affixing it in the top/bottom position through some sort of unknown magic, by timing it correctly. A unique key that would open a lock like this would make no sense structure-wise, it cannot theoretically exist. They would be opened with a combing tool that gets inserted and then pushes all the pins up/down to the fixed position actually, and this tool cannot be unique like a key.

@@petrgrebenicek1067 I think it's more likely most of them just don't know how it works. And even if they did the animation director is probably like, 'it's not very exciting watching his fingers barely move, let's make it really exaggerated so it's more fun!' As far as the internals of the lock go, probably the same thing. Just a really vague idea of how it actually works. The artists are never concerned about teaching people anything, just how it looks on screen.

@@LockNoob I sure did. For games like Skyrim I give them a pass on the special all-lock opening key because, well, it’s full of dragons and magic. So I just assume it’s a magical key. On a side note, I got one of those Zeta locks you picked recently and I quite enjoyed it. Not the most difficult pick, but definitely a bit different (the only one I’ve seen that could be described as a “dimple slider lock”), and all around a beautiful little device.

In the opening scene when they first show Edward Norton, he's removing screws from a 200-year old deadbolt on a door with an inch and a half Gap by way of somehow spinning the screws out of the hasp from the back side, when it's fairly obvious that a wedge could pop the door very easily or even a push tool LOL

I have thought about this. The biggest problem I have with the bobby pin and screwdriver method shown in Fallout 4 is that for a wafer lock I would use the wavy half of the bobby pin and rake the lock, not try to pick the wafers one at a time with the other end. The idea of rotating the pick back and forth is irrational - it needs to be in and out and up and down. Still, it's just a game and not meant to be a simulation.

@@LockNoob Makeing lock picking a game should be easy. The exciting elements of lock picking, as I see it are the danger of pushing something too far, dread of feeling around in the unknown, and puzzle putting a sequence together. The cost of failure being restarting from scratch. This already exists in different form as a game. Minesweeper. In Minesweeper you poke around a grid using incomplete data to inform your next move hopefully never going too far.

Good video but there is one thing you did not mention in reference to fallout 4, the ease of how a Bobby pin is broken. Also as a little side note for fallout 3 and New Vegas(I know you didn’t mention them), if you fail to “force” a lock open it makes the lock unpickable but the key will still open the lock which is really unrealistic.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion seemed to be relatively close to actual lock picking. Haven't checked it out in a while though, so it might be my memory playing tricks on me. ES III: Morrowind also had a lock picking mechanic, as did Fallout 3, and I suspect the Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76 may have lock picking as well, though they may be both using near identical mechanics to other games in their series. There are also VR versions of Oblivion and Fallout 4, though I don't think they realistically use VR hand movements, but I've never looked into it. Maybe as well people have modded the games to make the lock picking more realistic. ;-) I wonder how much of video games is game developers not understanding how lock picking works and them guessing what is going on, and a reluctance to show genuine techniques. Something to think about. :-\ Overall a very interesting video. Keep up the good work! There might be enough other video games for you to do a volume 2 of these! :-D

Morrowind lockpicking was chance based dependent on your skill level. You’d jam your pick at the door or chest and it would open or it wouldn’t depending on the internal dice roll. You are right, oblivion’s lockpicking is pretty good! ESO actually uses the same system.
@DrLex1
@DrLex1 3 жыл бұрын
Oblivion was indeed not too far off from actual picking, although it was more like bumping each pin separately. One had to bump each pin with a first click and then lock it in place with a second click at the right moment. The trick in becoming good at the picking mini-game was to learn how to react to the subtle audio cues that hinted at when to do the second click. Of course, as your character's lockpicking skill increased, everything started moving slower and it became easier to get the timing right. And once you got the skeleton key, it just became a matter of mashing the auto-try button…

@@SujanraAcoma ESO's lockpicking is a bit different. Rather than the weird rotatey gameplay of Skyrim, it uses individual pin picking, like Oblivion, but the key difference is that you simply hold a button to lower the pin and watch it jiggle as the spring tension increases, and you let go at the right time.

I would love to agree with everyone how fictional lockpicking always just looks like "wiggle wiggle and it's open" but than I've seen what the lockpicking lawyer does and it sometimes really does look like that in real life. "We just take this sharkteeth looking piece of metal shove it down the lock, wiggle it for a second and it's open". However I've always loved the lockpicking mechanics in elder scrolls games and seeing how close that actually was to lockpicking made me realise how insecure all those locks actually are, especially after watching 100 LPL videos....

Yes, not only that, but the only factor that plays a role in these games is the angle the pick is inserted at. The pick makes no movements to arrange the internal parts of the lock at all, it just sits there in the lock doing nothing, and the lock somehow scans the angle and turns the more the angle matches its acceptable margin. There has to be a laser sensor that reads the angle and a dynamic rotation stopper there in these locks, otherwise I have no idea how they would work refusig to rotate for the last millieter

If Fallout showed the inside of what they think is lock picking is im sure you'd give it a 2/10.

It’s a good point! Less is certainly more if you don’t know about something, so it was probably wise they didn’t show the insides!

i've been a game dev in various art capacities for the last 11 years and have shipped a good handful of AAA games. took up lock picking about 6 months ago due to not being able to go outside due to the pandemic. i never knew how badly it was generally portrayed in gaming. if we do any of this in my current game i'll make sure that it looks accurate!

I think the comparison between Thief and Skyrim was a bit unfair, as you have mentioned that Skyrim locks could be perfectly accurate, since they are in a fantasy setting, yet you didn't make the same point with Thief, which is also a fantasy game. Another thing I've an issue with is that Fallout and Skyrim use the same exact lockpicking mechanics, yet receive different ratings. I understand that the lock in Fallout looked like a wafer lock, but the fact that bobby pins can break in that game the same way picks do in Skyrim was not mentioned. I've personally found that aspect completely unrealistic, as I think, given the animations in the respective games, it's highly unlikely anyone would actually break the picks in these scenarios, as the "shaky" resistance from the lock seems to be quite strong, thus it seems really stupid that the character picking the lock would push further. Great video nevertheless, though.

Cool vid Ash, I found it pretty interesting. I was a big Skyrim fan myself, 2 of my lads still play it (13 & 18). You should do a TV/Movie version. Take care mate and have a great week.
