For those that don't know, the truck that launched it's engine out wasn't broken motor mounts. Pullers like that have strengthened everything in the engine to the point the block itself is now the weakest point. That truck blew the top half of the block, head and all, right out of the truck. You can see in a different picture of the truck after that the crank and pistons were in it and the cylinders were in the part that launched out.

Little know fact here, in order to complete a true, 100% percent oil change, you can't just drain the oil and replace it. That leaves all the old oil on the interior parts.... to make sure all used oil is gone, it's common practice to leave the pan off and bang the rev limiter for at least 3 minutes to burn off the used oil. Pro shops dont want you to know this performance technique.

Runaway diesels usually are a matter of an internal oil leak, the diesel will start to burn the oil as fuel even after you cut the fuel injectors off.
@backcountryme Жыл бұрын
Can be from explosive gasses in the air too. On the oil and gas sites here in Canada you have to have runaway prevention device on all Diesel engines on site. If there is a slight natural gas leak it can cause the engines to runaway. I have even seen a propane station leak cause a runaway on a truck.
@JayFredTheFreshest Жыл бұрын
@Backmarker Racing oh wow, down here in Texas we don't have to have any prevention devices. Oil plants, refineries, even natural gas power plants, this was the first I've heard of that. I wonder if the climate here has anything to do with different regulations?
@markzenhorst5259 Жыл бұрын
its either a failure within sending oil into the cylinder or, more commonly, when it is overfilled with oil or from driving (short) distances when the engine oil gets diluted with diesel resulting in a higher than max oil level. it wil push oil past the piston rings into the cylinder and take off to max rpm (usually 5500-6500, diesel wont burn faster than that)

Never saw that driver run before or since. now i know why
@merlin_gt4472 Жыл бұрын
Someone Tell me if im wrong but the explanation of them saying its Diesel vapours that get sucked in is wrong. Whats its actually caused by is if you have a turbo that is worn out and starts sucking in the oil thats keeping it lubed up the engine Starts running on its own oil that the turbo is shoving in there hence why you cant Just Turn it of couse the engine isnt running on fuel anymore at that point its running on its own oil.

12:16 I've seen that on a friends car a few years ago. Difference was, that he didnt add water, but used his car on everyday basis for a ~1 mile trip to work, so the engine never got to temperature. Result: condensed water accumulated in the oil pan, finally froze during winter and the engines last words were "wroo...blubb".

I think the more common cause for run away diesel is a busted oil seal in the turbo leaking into the intake side. There are industrial scenarios where diesel engines have to be outfitted with emergency shut off valves due to excessive flammable gasses in the air that may occur at a fuel refinery or gas processing plant. You can still find some older diesels in use that have manual shut off valves in case of a run away event.

6:40 diesels runaway because they’re compression ignition and often run a high pressure mechanical fuel pump AND volume pump. The faster the engine turns, the faster the pressure pump turns. If the throttle plate sticks open (engines are pumps and are pulling a vacuum) mechanical pump is gonna pulled more fuel (and you can run on just a pressure pump I believe VW did it in the late 90s at least), timing is there. So you got stoicheometry and she goes. Slam a board over the intake to starve it for air or cut a fuel line underneath; flaring a fuel line and putting in a union is cheap versus a motor.

The runaway is actually fun, I've seen a few in my career (truck and transport diesel mechanic) sometimes they will run away on their own oil, and can't be stopped. The guy who blocked off the turbo did 1 of very few options to stop them, I can choke them out, put manuals in highest gear and SLOWLY release clutch, blast them with a CO2 fire extinguisher (most fuel trucks have valves in them to be shut by driver in the event if a runaway)

lesser known fact - when in doubt, choke it out - this does NOT apply to your girlfriends.

There's a farmer in the UK who used to enter tractor pulling events with his tractor (obviously). He was curious to see what would happen if he mated a V8 and a straight 6, and it was epic.

I've spent hours learning how to fix things on my car both online and in person. It comes down to knowing your limitations. Do your oil, brakes, rotations, etc. Leave internals to a professional.

9:38 - Had this happen in my MX5. Likely the head was not getting enough oil and the camp welded itself to the head while the crank was still rotating and the timing belt ripped off the cam gear.

@@lonewitness9794 mine did it after a hard drive on track, I believe it overheated at one point and I didn't notice, then I didn't let the engine idle and cool off enough after the drive. Same I've checked all bolts for torque and was sure they were right.

Money shifting as a kid: “I’m going to slam the imaginary stick down in my cardboard box car, speed up, and win the race like the hero I am!” Money shifting as an adult: “…I’m never going to financially recover from this.”

A high school mate of mine experienced a diesel runaway in his Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi. The scariest 15 minutes of his life and the reason he never ever again bought an automatic transmission car. Fortunately we were at the local airstrip and while he was unable to shift the car in neutral or park, he managed to lock it in 1st gear and circle around the strip for 15 minutes, till the engine burnt all of its oil and overheated to a stop. The beauty of diesel engines being able to run even w/o diesel.

I don't know what I'm watching but seeing the product of water inside the engine sent chills down my spine.
