I was definitely one of those kids who was super against music theory because I saw a lot of the crowd as snobby and close minded. Once I started my Sound and Music Tech program in college and had to learn theory, it helped SO MUCH with being able to replicate composition techniques I used to only stumble upon by chance. Being able to know exactly how to make 7th and 9th chords, ways to build chord progressions, and terms like non-chord tones (as a few examples) unlocked so much in the way of being able to write music on the fly. One of the largest misconceptions about theory is they see it as a super rigid rule book, and it's why they're so against it. I see it more like a tool that streamlines the composition process

Kamex? Like, THE Kamex? Oh my god. The reason I know about you is because I used to listen to RetroSpecter's music and remixes CONSTANTLY (not that I don't listen to your music a lot as well). Am I right in assuming that your OC's are dating (Retro and Ace, that is)? Sorry for such a shedload of questions. I'm just honoured to be the first person to reply to a comment you've left on one of my other favourite KZbinrs' videos.

This comments needs all the likes. To be able to admit to yourself that you were wrong and to tell others how important theory is and how it elevated your own music making to new heights is really important message. Theory doesn't tell you how to write great music, it helps you to understand what's going on, give names and shapes to those ideas you have in your head and truly streamlines your workflow and gives you a library of great ideas and concepts from which to pull from when you want to. It opens your eyes to all what's possible.

Im a self taught guitar bass and piano player. Im quite good but there is a limit you can reach without music theory and reading. Once I reached that limit I could not continue making progress. After that I met one my favourite teachers and he helped me with the basics of theory and reading and Ive been able to progress amazingly! You can be good without theory and sheet music, but once you reach that limit you wont be able to break it no matter how hard you try and I say that from personal experience.

I don't mean to antagonize, but that's a very limited viewpoint. Many of the most accomplished musicians to ever live did/do not read sheet music. Sheet music does help a lot of people to progress, but saying you can't without it is misguided. Music should exist beyond the page.

I wish I'd started learning the piano sooner, you're completely right that knowing piano helps you visualise chords and scales. And the piano is just an awesome instrument in general.

I play Jazz Guitar and study music theory in my school, so I’m not *required* to read sheets on a regular basis. BUT I still practice reading exercises and compose in musescore for fun because I know I’ll be a better musician if I keep doing it. You don’t need to read music to be a musician, but a lot of the great musicians could read well and I want to be great too.

Learning the fundamentals of anything is really important. (Unrelated to music) People may not see me as this but because I know the fundamentals of 3d art, I am able to effectively make nice things as well as optimize it. People may see it as inefficient or time consuming but its a very neat process that makes doing things much easier. I used to be in band in middle school and learning to read sheet music is indeed a very useful skill. I do wish I could have learned piano during that time though. Never too late to start!

I taught myself music theory when I was in High School. It made me enjoy Band SO much more because I could understand what made the music I was playing so beautiful. Astounding ideas built upon a simple structure of musical connections: the perfect marriage of logic and creativity. My brain loved this, because, as an autistic person, I hear (and see, but that's not relevant here) parts rather than the whole, meaning I pick out each instrument part individually and mentally construct the whole piece. Music theory let me understand the fascinating connections between the parts and how they contributed to the whole. This made my interest in music spiral, and though I didn't realize it right away, sparked a love for composing music that later turned into a passion that I am now pursuing as a career. I only have one piece published for concert band, but the process along the way gave me an outlet for not just my musical creativity, but also all of my many other interests I always struggled to choose between as a potential career, and it feels amazing. Music theory doesn't limit creativity. It unlocks it and reveals the beautiful connection between logic and creativity that lives and thrives in music.

those things feel like tools to me: they where made for a reason, and look very efficient in it's job. but depending on your own workflow and experience, there is a point when you may never really use them. but, the more tool in your arsenal, the more options you have!

I have known SO many classical string players that have done the dear in the headlights look and it always baffles me (and even a few select classical pianists.) The other argument I've recently come across is how you were taught music ie. Suzuki or going through band with your Essential Elements. It's something my previous boss and I talked about and there was the snide remark that Suzuki teaches you to read music by ear and not by actually learning HOW to play it. I know I'm super guilty of this (as I did grow up on the Suzuki method) and was during my time at Berklee to which I threw myself into so many studio sessions so I could learn how to sight read and get better. Will I ever stop learning by ear? No, because it helps me with my listening on distinct inflections on the same piece but played by a different person along with if the piece should be played faster or slower. It's really an argument I wish I heard more about since it feels like the Suzuki method is dying out.

Huh, I wonder if what I do currently applies to topics you mentioned... Although I dont read sheet music, I have been doing a lot of research in microtonality and all the intricacies of that music, and even though I dont play piano/know typical piano styles or theory, I see each note as a number, a relation-, I see 5ths as 3/2, 4ths as 4/3, 3rds 5/4... which feels weird to point out but I think it helps me visualize notes on midi in a very primal relation that explain the theory of a piano. I have an electric piano and I barely play it, but I see the relations so much more now with the stuff I have learned that it helps me understand the piano and improvise (even if I didn't develop the dexterity to play the piano well) and then I watched a couple of polyrhythm videos and always try to tap out rhythms when I am bored (though I am not proficient, I can only do 3:4, 4:5, and 3:5 consistently), I wonder if these tapings apply to "sounding good drums"? although I do really need to practice ALL this more, I just wish I maybe had drums to bang out too

I was in this same camp for years (though I composed jazz) and learning to read really made things significantly easier for me. Like, I was genuinely surprised as to how one week of learning to read improved my ability to convey ideas and notate - ESPECIALLY when playing my tunes with other musicians.

You forgot *EAR TRAINING.* That’s probably one the most important things you could learn in music school. I’m totally self-taught, and though I have a good ear, I’m currently realizing not seriously studying Ear Training in a systematic manner has held me back in a big way.

I'm not admitted to school of medicine if I haven't read the basics and have the requirements under my belt. How is that any different from "gate keeping" that if you do not how to read music, you're not admitted to music school. IT'S BASIC SKILLS REQUIRED FROM SCHOOLED MUSICIANS. You can be a professional without going to school, but you can't be schooled musician without being able to read sheet music.

Yeah, I don’t see what the big deal is about reading traditional notation. It’s just not that hard! It’s also what the entirety of Western-Music is written in, as you also pointed out.

When I hear "you don't need to learn to read sheet music to be a good musician" I just hear "You don't need to learn to read and write to tell a good story." Technically correct but the guy who can read is going to be taken more seriously than the one who can't and in an academic setting that is like whining that colleges don't admit the illiterate. It sound that damn rediculous.
