You should add a section where he changes the settings to make them feel the most accurate they can be and then share that with the community so that they are learning with the most realistic environment possible. THAT kind of knowledge is invaluable to people actually thinking of learning to fly so they don't develop bad habits before taking lessons, or even while taking lessons. That will make better pilots in the real world which can only be a good thing.

He has never flown a UH1
@ChristianNelsonn Жыл бұрын
That wouldn't really be of much use since the control settings you use depends on your own setup. I mean, even if you have the same exact joystick and throttle, his has I believe a 20cm extension which completely changes the stick behaviour compared to the same joystick without the extension. So if you used his curves on your joystick (with no extension), you'd be using the wrong settings.

just saying, I've flown a couple different types of helo's and am a rated pilot. the huey is very realistic. @NegdoshaManido2 жыл бұрын
Hey Noob. Like you, I have probably spent more time in DCS just flying around and enjoying the aviation aspect of the game without the combat. It's great for that, and I enjoy the multiplayer servers that cater to those who want to practice formation flying, carrier ops, and aerobatics, in a multiplayer environment without having to worry about weapons being brought to bear against them. As far as your question about the realism of these games/sims and their fidelity, I am an Airbus A320 Captain, and I use the Toliss A319, and the FF A320 in X-Plane, along with some great hardware that replicates what I use in the real aircraft, to practice engine failures and other procedures that we never do IRL, to maintain proficiency. In days past, we would "chair fly", which means sittnig in a chair and rehearsing those procedures using our imagination. Now, I have what amounts to "chair flying" on steroids, in the form of a functional "sim" right in my house. My, how things have changed since I started flying many years ago! I enjoyed the video, and thanks to Chris and you for putting it together!

Truly the combination of your setup and the experience of the pilot makes this maybe the best video I've seen for home pit-builders. Well done and thanks for doing it! Wonderful those peripheral controls!! As a Huey II helicopter pilot, I can say that the pilot put in a great effort and a great job, since he had not flown DCS; However, the "feel of the aircraft" in real life changes a lot, I also see that the inputs in the controls are very sensitive (not because of the pilot but perhaps because of the configuration of the peripherals), that results in overcontrol of the aircraft and that result in excessive manoeuvres. I love DCS but it takes some getting used to as it's not easy at all and it takes some practice to get the hang of it.

She LOOOOVED to try and get us to puke, and the crew chief promised dire consequences if anyone puked. SO the longer the night went, the more drunk we got, and she would NEVER let up! It was still the best bar crawl ever.

Very, very cool video. I love this setup. If I had any critique, it would be that the screens don't move with the motion, so there's a bit of a visual disconnect compared to what you're feeling. These are big screens though so I imagine integrating them would be a challenge and probably a risk to the screens themselves when you crash or set the chopper down hard. Otherwise this is super cool. TrackIR would probably help a bit if you didn't want to take the VR route if it makes you feel sick.
@NOOBIFIER13372 жыл бұрын
The overall motion is slight, As an occupant, its really not as bad as when you are looking at it move as a spectator. I agree, but its a minor offset. VR is going to happen next. I have tested it and its Fantastic. No Issues.

You were talking about how you're not certain how well certain map features are actually modeled. Grim Reapers are a DCS group who post prolific amounts of DCS vids, I'm sure you're familiar with them. One contest they did was how far their pilots could make it flying through an underground tunnel on one of the desert maps, Nevada or Persian Gulf, I think it was Nevada. As I recall one pilot made it through using the little stunt plane, the Christian Eagle II. Link to that video if it interests you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4HFqXmHbsdqnqM Fun stuff like that makes DCS worth playing. I'm interested in seeing him fly the Apache, it flies less "janky" than the Huey. I'm also interested and seeing him with the Gazelle, as it's more "janky" imo. Great video btw, the subject is really interesting! I've seen a video where Growling Sidewinder fights an IRL rafale pilot flying a mirage and is quite challenged, but they never sit down and talk about the major differences between the game and RL. Might you consider giving him dampened Track IR or Tobii that only looks up and down to a certain degree and with a large dead zone? Perhaps a switch to turn it on and off as well to make it more manageable for him. Maybe that would allow him to use the best feature of the Huey, the glass kick-panels and overheads and help his ability to hover and quickland. My father's unit when I was growing up had Medical Hueys, and I was allowed to come in and see the cool choppers, I loved those things! I wish MISC would have taken it's design cues from the Huey and not a 70's Buick!
@NOOBIFIER13372 жыл бұрын
I will gladly take all of that into consideration. As we had discussed in the video, there is a more complex motion system coming, plus I will be asking him to test this in VR also. VR looks great for the pilot, but is ugly for the spectator. It is worth it, just to see the proficiency levels go up as the vision improves. As you said, small downward windows are massive assists for station keeping. Thanks for watching and the quantity of information you provided.

Awesome session. Learned a lot from him. As a fixed wing private pilot and long time flight simmer, I value the perspective of other pilots a lot more than that of just "gamers". I agree, VR makes a world of difference, especially with helicopters. My hovering (as well as my AAR and formation flying in fixed-wing), improved dramatically when I started using VR (Rift CV1) a few years ago! My current HMD is the Varjo Aero and the clarity in it is incredible! BTW, I just ordered a MPS-1 Blackbird for my NLR V3 seat mover, using your discount code. Now the long wait begins for it to ship, as well as my Virpil collective, CM3 and grip. I fly more fixed wing in DCS, but do enjoy the Huey and recently the Apache, which is why I decided to finally invest in a collective. Can't wait to fly the Kiowa and Chinook when they arrive!

When you get your VR configured, I'll buy your displays from you. You'll never want to use them again lol. Well, maybe keep them until SC gets VR... LOL. I'm a pilot in real life and I'd agree with your friend that simulators - even with VR and motion - are great procedure trainers and will save you time and money in real training, but they do teach you bad habits, that you'd have to train out afterwards. We use multi million dollar simulators where I work, and they are great, but the motion lacks in certain scenarios and can cause disorientation that you wouldn't get in the real aircraft. The motion (even multi million dollar 6DOF) also can't simulate acceleration/G loading accurately, which is where you get your seat-of-the-pants feel. All that said, home sims are amazing and I'm a DCS addict. Hopefully see you online some day.

If I had a real pilot over to assess my sim rig. I would really want them to get the controls, ergonomics, stick forces as 1:1 with their experience as possible. I'm sure they would need quite some time to get comfortable in sim before being sure of it. Since we don't have this luxury I would like to know if there is a baseline adjustment that most setups are off. Maybe at defaults they are all over sensitive etc. Kinda like recommended adjustments most simmers can make.

Lifting a crashed BO105 with the CH47 was like a Bell 212 lifting nothing.A good trick to master night vision goggles is to drive a vehicle with them on, you save many hours of flying, and before driving, walk with them carefully as they are very expensive.To date, I believe that there is no full motion helicopter simulator with which you can learn to maintain hover. Take a look Bölkow Bo 102 heli trainer. To avoid bad influences from the simulator to reality, something that I see that can be counterproductive is the use of throttle controls like those on airplanes, since they really work the opposite of the throttle control of a helicopter.

I play a lot of DCS as well as SC, (and also have my CD1, still in though) if you want to try some meaningful pvp in a huey where you can actually have some fun flying CSAR, or dropping troops etc... there are a few good multiplayer servers you can try. I recommend "Enigma's Cold War server" or "Conquest 90's" both great pvp servers. You can also try "Dynamic DCS" server, but it's pretty hard core and not for the noob.... I fly a lot of F18, f14 and sit in the front seat of the apache, and do quite a bit of huey stuff as well, so it's nice to see your friend's take on the huey should help quite a bit. Cheers and have fun. PS the multiplayer pvp community uses the beta build, not the stable, so if you're on the stable DCS build a lot of those servers will not work for you.

Long question but please bear with me, I've had 5 strokes in as many years and have difficulty getting to the point. I got the chance to fly a B206 as an Air Cadet in 1985 - flight sims (DCS, MSFS, X-Plane) are my hobby BUT I want my experience when flying the likes of a B206, B407, B412, MD500, UH-1 to be as real as possible and that means getting a proper cyclic/collective setup along the lines of the Puma. But I just can't afford such luxuries so I have to make do with my existing X52 Pro HOTAS with the "cyclic" between my legs on the box of my Quest 2 and "any old box" to my left for the X52 throttle as my collective. I'm looking at getting the VIRPIL "VPC Desk Mount V4" (small or large) and combine it with their "VPC Mouse Mount Adapter V2" as a solution with the aim that at I can at least put my X52 stick on a "shelf" such that it is between my legs, rather than on the Q2 box between my legs or another box so that it is next to my right hip. I see from this video that the grip of your cyclic is actually quite higher than I can recall from my one experience flying the B206 in the '80s - I have mine such that the top of the grip is about level with my "belly button" (LOL!). Is that an accurate setup you have as I don't want to get a "solution" from VIRPIL that will place my "cyclic" too low down? It's been many many years since I flew that B206 and most of my brain cells have been deleted by the 5 strokes. Any advice (or a donation of superfluous free gear for that matter!) will be most gratefully appreciated. Best regards, and please take this request seriously, I'm 53 and not a "would-be" kid, I devoted most my life since 1987 writing the software of the HUDs for C-17, F-5, F-16 and Eurofighter, TRN for GR4 in Gulf War I and the fly-by-wire for B777. You can just put the shorter cam in it. It was high because he was flying a UH1

@@NOOBIFIER1337 Thanks for that rapid response. I'll go for the "S" version then, once I can get the funds. Cheers again.

@@NOOBIFIER1337 I've found this video extremely helpful - with only using my archaic and unrealistic controls I've always thought my ability to control the UH-1 in DCS was much less than to be desired. But I can see that I am not actually that far away from having a good "feel" for the UH-1 without haptic feedback s you have with that fantastic 6DOF motion platform. I use the Quest 2 but I am let down by the GPU in my PC, I am using the RTX3060 which, when used in VR, is less than perfect, but better than my old GTX980. I have a long journey to go in terms of hardware but thanks to this video I at least have something to aim for - that's assuming I don't have a 6th stroke!!!

Great video. I'd love to have a rig like that as well. Very interesting guest too! I got the privilege of a ride in Slingsby out of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada back in 1999. My pilot was retired air force with the nickname "Speedy". I'll never forget it. I've since had the chance to fly in just about everything from C130 Hercules, gliders, Bell 206, a Bell 212, and have worked with some amazing pilots and aircraft. Your guest likely knows and or flies with some talented service members I know on the east coast as well. Good luck to them, and you as you continue to build your rig and skills.

It is possible he knows who you are talking about, the world is so small and especially small in our military community. Thank you and I am sure Chris will get into the comments and likely read this.

Awesome Video man.Just seeing how much fun a real Professionel got with that was pure Joy. But even with the Wide Screen you need at least Track IR or something like it or VR for DCS because you need to look around all the Time,so you willl be amazed by the Difference it will make as soon as you got it ;)

Thanks, I have TOBII, Track IR, Luc Clip, VR Valve Index… it was the first video, so we started with no variables, just flight and motion. The point was to test those in the future, once we validated the basics.

The Huey has changed sooo much since this was recorded, its a power monster now compared to what it was and require much more pedal work! :D I think a single screen and a good track IR profile would been better, this looks pretty rough to fly with, and also, the Mi8 at this time is the better helicopter, not sure how old this video is exactly, but Huey and Gazelle and Apache all has improved leaps and bounds since this was released. Mi8 has barely changed because it was so good already... UH60, dont even bother... its from what I've read using the KA50 flight model as a base, because with DCS you can only do so much as a modder if you are not a ED partner, you dont have access to the tools you need to make it all your own. I could be wrong on the KA50 FM but it sure feels like it, its no were close as good as the other helicopters. The KA50 it self, the latest Black Shark 3 is said by ED to be the most complete and advanced helicopter to date, and I'm sure that could be true, but I never get along with it, its not fun to fly, because of its coaxial nature, not saying its unrealistic, just not fun to fly and has many problems, and from what I understand, that is true for the real thing too. Problem with helicopters in sim or real life... no matter how much the professionals try to teach the general public about them and how they work none gets it, even some of the smartest people in the entire world dont know how a helicopter flies and think if the engine dies they just fall out of the sky... Same problem in the sim community, people think they got it but they dont... not even close. Watching this video makes me happy tho, because it confirms so much of my own thoughts and ideas around helicopter flying, things I've mostly just figured out on my own, I've been helicopter crazy for 30 years, started flying them in sim in FS98 and onwards, got back in to it with MSFS2020 and then soon after, I jumped to DCS.

I’ve had a chance to watch some of this, and I’m wondering if the nose position can be adjusted by repositioning the head position in the cockpit. Also, it might be something that goes away in VR. I’m away from home, so I can’t test it myself.
