A iconic car from back in their day. They do make a superb sound. A car roadtest in a way that can only be Hubnut. I remember when I bought my Skoda Rapid the roadtests in the magazines at the time calling it the poor mans 911.

Lovely, thank you. And unforgettable. I owned a 10 year old 911SC for a couple of years in the late '80's. I can only say I thought it was absolutely wonderful. Guards Red, black interior, and yes, a tail spoiler. The beautiful flat 6 cylinder thrum , and the sheer grunt from 0mph. Like no other car I've ever owned, before or since. We had one of those 15 years ago (when you still could get them at a reasonable price...) - really fun to drive- but only after a few slight modifications. I thought the heavy clutch and the sloppy 2nd gear was just normal- turns out that was just neglect- a specialist repaired it and that transformed the car. But I am in Germany- workshop costs were too brutal- new engine studs, a repaired heater and the clutch did cost more than half what the car was worth at the time- also the fuel consumption... a full 85l tank got me about 300km far...

What a beauty 😎 i like 911's up to 993 generation. After that 911's doesn't interest not so much, they are ok, but i like more older (air-cooled) ones. Love that sound. I think the real HubNut 911 Will be 4-cylinder 912 model 😀

Really enjoyed your review and drive of this. I realise this video got uploaded almost a year ago now, but weirdly only just watched it for the first time - not sure how I missed this one! I'm starting to understand what Jeremy Clarkson meant when he said if you filled your mouth and nose with all the dials, buttons and switches from the dashboard of a 911 from this era, then sneezed them out, they'd end up better organised. Dashboard looks like an ergonomic disaster! I believe he also stated that you don't so much look through the windscreen as "wear it like a huge spectacle". I like them though - always had a soft spot for the 911 of the late 70s and 80s era. It also sounds very smooth for an old timer.

I had an 88 Carrera 3.2 for 13 years and the switches in that were fired from a cannon at the dashboard by the factory. Wherever they stuck they wired them up.

Excellent review. As a long-time owner of a 136 Rapid, labeled "the Poor Man's Porsche", it is interesting to see. I can see why the cars were compared, but, to be honest, I think the Poor Man got the better package :-) Advise to anyone driving a rear engine car - keep the tyres fresh, it helps prevent the front wheels locking up during breaking.

I had a speedyellow 1996 911 993 Turbo with 600hp 595 ft/lbs torque amazing car!! I currently own a 1978 911SC with 57k miles and it's also very enjoyable to drive in its own special way. Love that the only straight lines on the car are the two on the hood

4:55 sidewalls that fold and become full diameter when charged. You have a canister of air that you connect to the valve, then belt the end of the canister with a hammer to charge the tyre. Once your regular tyre is fixed or replaced, the spare tyre is scrap and you need to replace it and the canister (or you could leave it fully inflated for next time but it will take up space). American cars of the late 70's / early 80's had them.

Great review. I think you sum it up very well. It's a perfectly drivable car for everyday use, but not nothing particular (and true, the gauges and buttons have been thrown in with a shovel - well actually the layout was probably thought out in 1964 and then new buttons have been added in random places since then. And you should try filling it up: You need to hold the petrol-nozzle at a totally backward angle to get the fuel into the tank). When you drive it at normal speeds it is not very confidence-inspiring and gives absolutely no supercar feeling, but the faster you go, the more it gets itself together and the tighter it gets. The same goes for the engine; if you change at 3500-4000 RPM it's OK-fine but nothing special. It is only when you give it the beans and keep the revs up it really starts pulling. My 1983 SC has old-style extractor manifolds and a free-flowing exhaust. Judging from the video it seems to pull better than the tested ex. Also they really like to be opened up with some sustained high speed driving (fortunately I don't live too far from the German Autobahns).

The SC was still not bad for the time 0-60 in 7.4 seconds was fast for the 1980s and 140mph top speed , the Turbo version took around 5.5 seconds which was ridiculously quick for the early 80s and 174mph top speed , hence why these cars got such a reputation for speed

Great video. Nice to see you test a lovely car like that. It is amazing how dated the car looks, inside particularly. I own a very early Cayman (Nov 2005) and wouldn't change it for the world. In fact like it far more than I though I would. I decided to try a Porsche after my kids bought me a track day sampling an Aston, Ferrari, Lamborghini and a Porsche 911. I really hated the first 3, so heavy and clumsy all of them, but was knocked out by the Porsche. Its like you 'wear' it. I'm 60 something now and if id owned a Porsche earlier Id never have returned to anything else! ps I am also the proud owner of a half restored 1938 Morris 12/4 series 3 so I haven't lost touch!

Just a tip! The oil gauge will only read correctly when the engines warm and at Tickover due to the dry sump system, people do easily get fooled by the guage but once you’re used to it it’s fine

Great video, Ian! Thank you. A dream car for me and one that is very close to my heart. We had several of these when I was a kid, mostly late 60’s vintage (not cheap cars then, but worth a bloody fortune now). Our 911 would creep right up our steep snowy driveway while our Honda Civic just spun it’s front wheels. Excellent pursuit vehicle. Mom had to chase down the school bus on curvy mountain roads many a morning when we were running late. When you have one of these in rural North Carolina around 1980, the kids on the school bus think your dad is a drug dealer😳!but the girl at the Hardee’s drive thru asks you to turn off the motor because she can’t hear whenever a VW comes through the line😂. So many good times in these cars. Sadly, little chance at buying one now as the values are out of sight

GYou had the turbo only in 89 in a 5 spd gearbox! Extremely rare and desirable car! My father used to have one back in the days. What I always liked about the base 2.7 and also the SC, and the turbo as well in fact, is the Kjetronic injection system. Totally mechanical and physical in fact, because the vacuum in the manifold determinates the quantity of fuel injected. It’s a very clever system and what I like about it is that your foot, purely your foot, determines how much it will drink. You can “play” a lot and hover a lot with the gas pedal in order to get optimum (lol) consumption. It is really much of a shame that the SC and even thr Carrera up until 1987 didn’t get the hydraulic clutch. How for god’s sake was that even accepted by the buyers? Not to talk a word about the horrific clunky 915 gearbox with waaay of play and work syncros on second...Even Triumph’s from the late 60’s had hydraulic clutch. Another nightmare on these cars are the ventilation and defrosting system when cold. All the air coming thru the vents came all along the way from the cooling turbine of the engine. Later on, little additional blowers were installed that begin to make squeaky sounds after 50k miles... And what about the odd steering position with the pedals way off centre and the pedals going in a bow instead of other cars when you depress them. Another thing: the locking system.. you lock it with the round button in the doorcard, but unlocking only works with a push on a button. Perhaps not on the SC but surely on the 3.2 and the 993. But hey, it’s a Volkswagen with a Porsche badge in the end ;). The sunroof switch is visible at 8:29. It is located underneath the dials, between extreme left and second left clock.

The most important thing is to not destroy the galvanisation of a tenth millimeter when repainting because many times it is rubbed off and then they do rust like every other car.

HAHA! .... great review Ian, somehow I missed this... and a review in my own neck of the woods, wonderful to see you enjoying the Ruamahanga Hill over to the Wairarapa. Thoroughly enjoyed this review, good down to earth no-hype review of a great car. Yes, the 911 is really good ... though I have a 914 which is even more suited to that road, it loves it. Also fun to see the differences, the 914 also has the quirky and rather hazy 901 gearbox which takes awhile to get used to, and the cantered pedal position to avoid the wheel well, but it feels a lot more like being in a lotus and also drives like one... think europa.... its also a flat four, which is a little closer to your hub nut spirit and wonderfully practical both a daily and long distance tourer. I say all this with air-cooled engine in mind as that is very 2CV, and I've owned a flying tent for over 30 years, another genius air cooled creature, which by the way also loves driving over that hill!

I wondered about the knob on the doors! Because of no current safety equipment, light weight, it does not need a lot of horsepower. And typical Porsche which scattered controls about unlabeled, so the owner's manual is necessary. Another interesting review!

My brother had a Porsche Targa in the 8ties, but I am more into Vans and Trucks (Semi's, Lorries). Anyway, this is one of the cars I would love to own. She is a real beauty and usable on a dayly basis. BTW, I think, if the steering wheel would be on the left side (where it belongs to), your driving position is much better, especially with your left foot. Thanks Ian, for this wonderful video.

The 930 is still by far the best looking 911. And once they went liquid cooled, after the 993, I completely lost interest. And whilst I'm sure the new versions are staggeringly fast and capable cars, I'd take one of these every time, especially a Singer! They also have one of the best engine notes of all time too.

4:13 One of my favourite touches, the rubber flap under the fuel filler door, to protect your paint from petrol drips. The devil - and the elusive feel of quality - is always in the details. PS: the factory designed the dashboard with the speedometer straight, as shown by the odometer also being crooked in this example. I guess it's either comer loose and shifted, or an owner has deliberately rotated it at some point.

Indicator stalk position: I reckon that it should be on the side closest to the transmission so that finding the correct gear and correct indication is an easy, one-hand operation. So RHD cars built in LHD countries get it right. (And if you don’t have a manual, it’s easier to indicate through a roundabout anyway.)
