LOL. I had a customer in a very nice part of Nth London who had one of these when new. I was carrying out building works on her house and we regulaly had long chats over coffee where she told me amongst lots of things, her marital problems. Had the house, the cars, the holidays, but dead relationship. One day she took me out for a drive in her Z3 and took me for lunch. Nice lady (No, nothing happened between us) i think she was just bored. At the end of the job she paid me extra for the time spent talking and that day out! True story, nice lady, and a nice car.

And did not realise the Z3 cars styling and the E39 were Japanese styled. Nice to see the z3 being tested! Was a suggestion of me some videos back at the of one of them! It’s a shame it is equipped with an automatic gearbox as well as the fact that a 3.0 like this hasn’t been ordered with either heated seats, and moreover, not even stereo or cruise control buttons on the steering wheel. Oh yes, that color is extremely extremely rare. It was introduced on the E38 7 series in the Individual catalogue. And a little correction, there IS a sport mode! When it is in D, and you switch the lever to the left, it is in Sport mode. When in Sport mode, you are allowed to shift manually up or down. Towards rear is up, towards front of the car is downshift. If you want to go back to Sport, you need to switch back for a second to D, after which you can re-engage Sport. All this is possible when driving.

It's actually a new thing for us Hubnutters to see what your take is on what I would say is a away too obvious, overly flashy petrolhead car (i.e., not very Hubnutty at all). I DO enjoy Hubnut for the celebration of non-flashy, non-obvious overlooked cars, and I really dislike sports cars, supercars, hypercars and other stuff only Top Gear fans like, BUT I really think the idea of Hubnuttery is acceptance, open-mindedness and room to learn about cars we previously ignored and didn't really care about. Definitely the case with this BMW.

Move the selector to the left and you will get gears 1-4 automatically (5 is locked out) with shift points further up the rev range. However, as soon as you use the Steptronic feature (fwd or back) you're in 'manual' mode, with some obvious limitations such as it won't allow a downshift that would over rev the engine. And if you fail to change down at a standstill it will reselect 1st. You can also manually select 5th, However, in conventional drive mode the gearbox adaptions are very intuitive indeed. I ran a 528i with the same 5spd ZF Steptronic 'box and rarely used anything besides 'D'.

Yeah, I did have a play off-camera with manual mode. Handy to hold the gears through a series of corners, but full auto does the job most of the time.

Something different indeed, but it's a nice car for NZ roads. Altough the speed limit on most rural roads is 100km/h, this also aplies to the more bendy roads in large parts of NZ, and is still better than the 80km/h speed limit here in the Netherlands. Aside from that, roads are much quieter in NZ so often no traffic in front of you to hold you up, and a lot of driving fun is guaranteed. Wish I could take my MX-5 NA as carry on luggage next time I go to NZ, have to see if I can rent one over there, a nice ND or so.

The BMW Z1 was really unique in 1987 and is an expensive collector item nowadays. The Z3 is a very good example being in the tradition of the BMW 506 roadster from 1957. If you can get a Z3 in good condition for a reasonable price in 2019, go buy it, drive it, take care of it and double your investition in 5 - 8 years. I still have a Saab 900 II SE roadster fully equipped in my garage, was 3000 Euro 4 years ago, now from 4000 to 5000 Euro. That´s how money should go up its way, meanwhile having fun using it. Since Z3, BMW never managed to build iconic roadsters again. It all went down the drain of meaningless car design of the 21st century. Cheers from Germany, Bernd

I know the 'too much power for the public road' feeling. Got the same feeling with my bike (75hp on 180kg without the rider). Having plenty of low rev power is amazing, i can cruise on the highway very comfortably and don't have to shift down to overtake, but it's just so damn easy to get to naughty speeds, that it also ruins the challenge of driving quickly. Best option is always to just get another bike. The Z3 seems properly quick. Close to sporty bike speed. i'd lose in a drag race if it would catch me off guard and i still have to decide to rev the absolute balls out of it. That's definitely a benefit of having an automatic gearbox.

That must be a thing with German auto gearboxes, I had a 2003 Merc E320CDI some years ago & that downshifted when descending hills, a useful feature. Most other auto gearboxes just dump into top, leaving you on the brakes to stop things running away. And I couldn't agree more about when you want to gently accelerate using the torque of the engine & yet the 'box annoyingly kicks down, I had a D5 Volvo that did that at motorway speeds.
