Glad to see Sean Nos making a come back, Irish Step dancing has been ruined by wigs, garish expensive costumes and too many competitions...nice to go back to what dancing was meant to be.

I pretty much hate the sight of the wigs and those fancy dresses they wear. Plus the thick makeup with the girls.

@_egas calybird I'm not a woman, so I probably don't really know, but I've been to a number of competitions by now (both as a spectator and contestant) and I have seen it happen a lot of times before: the girl with the most standard outfit and hardly any make-up wins, while the most sparkly, neon-pink dressed dancer loses. Don't get me wrong: I also don't like the ridiculuous dresses and wigs and had a hard time recognising people from class at competitions, so I wouldn't mind if they would be banned. But the rest is just up to dancing. As every girl in the younger categories almost looks alike (sparkly dress, a shitload of make-up and a huge wig), I can hardly believe adjudicators really pick the girl that looks the best. It's about dancing, not about how many centimeter your wig extends over your forehead and not about the amount of sparkles on the dress.

@@weeardguy Glad to hear it! The hair etc is just...ridiculous,and I imagine all the excessive bells and whistles,so to speak, cost a pretty penny as well. You don't need all that to dance.

@@unseelie63 True. A while ago, my teacher started some conversation about wigs as someone always offered B-models with an A-model price to inexperienced people, which she found misleading and a disgrace. As I'm a male and thus have no idea of the costs involved, I asked her what I would need to expect. I heard prices of 80 to 150 Euro or so, the 80 euro of course being the more standard (and probably of less quality) model. As tiara's quickly cost tenths of Euro's as well, most people also go for rhinestone-decorated buckles for their shoes (or whatever those shiny things placed over the laces on the heavy shoes are called, I'm still a male ;) ) and then you have to add the dress, a pair of ghillies and the make-up... darn, I'm glad I'm a male. But maybe it's different when you're a girl and you get sucked into that world automatically... I don't know of course.

Wow I love this! I’m a feis dancer and being part of the more modern style of Irish dance (even though I love it), I love to watch the older styles of Irish dance. Even though I love competing and enjoy the more sporty side of dance, it’s nice to connect with traditions and be reminded of what dancing is really about.
