Just in time for Shenmue 3! Phew!
Skip to 2:16 for the start of the footage, which includes:
- journey from Tokyo to Yokosuka
- Sakuragaoka
- Dobuita Street
- the harbour
- sneaking around warehouses
Many thanks to Hank-chan for her great footage, and apologies to all for my shaky floaty cam, which is especially bad at the end.
My copy of Shenmue 3 is getting delivered to the UK, and I'll be receiving it in Australia in January. More from me then on what will hopefully be an awesome game.

Just started playing "Shenmue" on the dreamcast this year, I absolutely fell in love with it. This video was fantastic, and it was great to see the real locations.

That’s awesome, I haven’t played any of the re-releases of the game so for me shenmue is inseparable from the Dreamcast, VM Unit and all. Hope you can track down shenmue 2, and I’m glad you enjoyed the video!

Camera persons like “wait what- staph!” Haha 😆 Loved the video, been a long time Shenmue fan. Started with the second game on Xbox though.

Haha! You can tell the camera operator isn’t used to Ryo’s shenanigans 😂 Glad you enjoyed it! I’m overdue a replay of 1 and 2

I wonder if Yu Suzuki chose Yokosuka as the setting because he thought Japanese players might be bored by a typical Japanese setting. Yokosuka is unique in Japan (along with Okinawa) for having such a high concentration of foreigners/US military presence. This also allows for the introduction of believable criminal elements, which are very rare in Japan outside of foreigners and the yakuza. Of course, many non-Japanese gamers may find typical Japanese settings more unusual and therefore interesting, so it's a tradeoff.

I’d be interested to know the official line but I suspect you’re right on all counts. It seems to hit that sweet spot where it works as a story setting but also an appealing location, one way or another, for a range of audiences.

Thanks! I wasn’t sure how to explore it when I visited and it ended up a bit random. Definitely go if you get the chance, just being on that street is uncanny!

Wow this was fun, loved the pace, really relaxing and nostalgic. Seeing the real locations shows how insanely authentic Shenmue is. Gave me lots of inspiration for a little Shenmue project I’m working on

Thank you so much! I originally wanted to do something more ambitious, comparing the real location with the game etc, but in the end I think lots of videos are out there doing that and it was better to keep this easygoing and manageable. Good luck with your Shenmue project!

Always interesting to see what adventures you get yourself into. It definitely would have been cool to see a comparison between the game and real life, but you always seem to have so much going on, I understand why you might not have a ton of free time to dedicate to a video.

thewieczard thanks man! I would have loved to make that video, but it’s ridiculous how long it’s taken me just to make this one. It’s also a pain to get my Japanese consoles working in Australia, so capturing the footage is no easy task either. I’m hoping to be able to capture gameplay again from next year though. Hope you’re doing well!

You’re right sakuragaoka, or as I think it is really called minami gaoka is the best. Really has the whole mystical vibe down. Yu Suzuki really had great insight for how Yokosuka could make a story for his game. Crazy to think how this game encapsulated so much of Japan into it. In a way, when we all played it in 2000 it was the first time feeling what it would be like to travel there

Thank you for giving me the chance to see the real locations of Shenmue 1.Ive played it for the fist time 2 months ago. I live playing retro games and they have many more to give to me rather than new games. Shenmue has great atmospere and beutiful soundtrack, I was a nintendo guy back then and I am today with Zelda an Mario and all of that retro games. I still play today Tetris on nintendo switch.. For us these game have to give lots more than the newer ones. Thak you for the video. Greetings from Greece.

Hi, thanks for sharing your experiences and memories! I first played this on release in the UK back in 2000, and from that day I always hoped to visit japan. I never imagined I’d end up living there for several years and have the chance to visit Yokosuka! I’m a big Zelda fan too (especially OoT and TP) so I understand your nostalgia! Greetings from Australia :)
