I'm a personal trainer and I agree! Your focus in the beginning should be on identifying poor habits, emotional triggers, and eating right. Pushing someone in a training session who can't perform a workout due to lack of energy (caused by a low caloric intake) just opens the door for inefficiencies and injuries. Focus on THOUGHTS, HABITS, and FOOD. That applies to everyone! You can't outrun your fork. Training too early can also spike your appetite due to the demand you are putting on your body. Give yourself some grace.
@officialbariatrica72123 жыл бұрын
As a personal trainer, you should know how to adjust for low-calorie intakes, which is what can happen. This man even suggests that you don't even walk. You journal and meditate. Go check out his Facebook page if you don't believe me. Even the Obesity Action Coalition suggests just basic walking until at 6 weeks post-op and then more exercise can be added. If as a personal trainer you can not research what is needed post-surgery then you should not be working with bariatric patients.

I was not going to the gym but I was doing at home walking videos 6 days a week for 30 mins for 2.5 weeks straight and I started one week post op. I lost absolutely nothing. I said to myself I can't eat I can't get my water in, how am I gonna lose weight 😫. As someone who have lost 56 lbs on WW without working out and never lost weight while going to a gym, I decided I was not going to listen to the surgeon but proceed like I have in the past. As soon as I stopped working out I was down a pound and by the time of my one month check up I was down 4 lbs. I had experienced a stall less than a month out of surgery. I focused on getting my protein and water in and the weights finally started to drop. I am just at the start of month three but will continue to focus on the protein and water and if I start experiencing another stall then I will switch it up and bring in exercise.

I originally watched this video right after my weight loss surgery. Today, 4 months later, I revisited it. Makes total sense. I've been convincing myself that I need to go to the gym because everyone has noticed the weight loss and my skin is starting to sag in spots. Going through your video again, I realized that the gym is not what I need. I need to keep focused on what I eat and how I feel inside. I'm making progress - I just need to stay focused. Maybe I'll be ready in a few months, but not now.

Thank you for logical, straightforward talk regarding. The pressure to work out and go to the gym. I have not gone to the gym yet and I am almost 13 months post-op. I have cited these exact reasons when someone questions me as to why I have not participated. I have not been ready. I am still having some difficult with my eating habits. I have lost 106 pounds and am 10 pounds from a normal bmi. I think as a WLS patient--there is a tendency to either to feel judged or be judged from society. Therefore the desire to make our weight loss appear "natural" (I hate that term) is greater. I did have help-I am very thankful for it. I have had to make serious changes to my behaviors. I think the weight loss community can be our own harshest critics-everyone should learn the best way to lose and maintain weight loss for themselves. Stop spending time justifying our choices to others--in the end one must live with the results of our choices. Great video. Thank you for sharing.

Sharleen Davis hey what is your gym routine and food routine from 4 weeks post op. I intend to get physical too to speed it up. And 3kg a week sounds amazing. I’m just not sure whether I should lean towards cardio or weight training. Having never been to the gym before I’m not sure what exactly is to be done. I don’t want excess skin but I’m considering liposuction in a years time if any does appear! I’m currently nearly 3 weeks post op. Started at 121kg. I’m 110kg now. In lbs that’s 242 I think the last time i converted on google. I can manage 10,000 steps easily but it’s not something I do everyday. So I was just wondering how does the gym life work for us and what do you eat/drink from now on. I’m not fussy to blend my protein chicken. I’m not at that stage yet for another 2 days
@bigpappahemi42636 жыл бұрын
Liposuction WILL NOT remove excess skin! It has to be cut off. I go to the gym every day and can telling you from experience that it does increase my hunger somewhat. The benefits of moderate exercise far outweigh the negatives. My mobility is better because I'm stronger. I have much less pain. I feel better about myself mentally. It helps with my lymphedema. Work on building your stamina, strength and mobility and you will feel better over all. Don't push yourself too hard and make sure your expectations match what going to the gym will really do for you. I wish you much success and happiness!

I would say to go very slowly as you increase your physically activity. You don't start with a Full Gym Workout; you go slow and then build but most importantly you must match your caloric intake with the exertion. IF your eating properly and taking in enough of the right calories, you will see slow but steady weight loss which is the best way. A good rule of thumb as to weight loss; the fast it comes off the faster it will come back. Slowly and carefully is the best way.

Neither he nor I have "skinny brain," and this stuff would have been nice to know before I tried to change things for that butt-wipe. Not even my trainer knew this. This is good stuff here. I always knew that the surgery would only get me to the top of the crap pile, out of the mire, but it wouldn't mean I didn't still have to still get rid of the crap pile. Don't ever give up. If you fall down, get back up. The weight loss is a tool in your tool box that you can use to heal completely. There is still work involved. Like this Dr. says, you have to get there first.

I'm not doing it for weight loss, I do it because it makes me feel good and motivates me to eat well. I feel for me I get enough calories to work out and feel good about it. @@jena425 hi Jen, as Ellie said, she paid to do her surgery thru private sector and she is low in the spectrum guessing she did the surgery with a bmi between 30 to 35 (which is not approved by insurance). In your case if you have a bmi from 35 to 40 like me and you are athlete you will be fine swimming after the first month (consult your doctor when will be ok). Swimming and cycling is cardio, so when you are tired just stop. The point for the 6 to 12 months is to lose all the weight, then you be full force back on track. This come for a person that did sport all his life. I played water Polo from 5 to 26 years old,then tennis for 10 years, and since 2016 cycling (gravel cycling). My surgery will be September 15 this year, and like you I have the same question. Luckily I have a cyclist friend that did the wls and told me the same things I'm telling you. "You be weak but after the 8 to 12 month you be in shape and full of energy, the wait is worth it". Keep in touch, maybe we can trade things we learn while losing weight. 😊👍. Welcome to the new bariathlete world!

I don’t want to be sedentary…I want to be active. So exercise till I feel tired? Then stop? That makes sense to me but want to make sure…maybe work out 3 days a week instead of 4? Your input is appreciated!

I did great and lost 100 lbs in 6 months w/out gym and then started going to gym and I stalled. Never got to goal. I was 35 lbs from my goal. Well I gave up 🤦🏻♀️ and I’ve gained 38 lbs back in the last 3 years. So now I’m 70ish pounds from my personal goal and I feel so uncomfortable. I am working on my issues with food first! Thank you. I am pre-op. My surgery is on friday and I'm already putting so much pressure on myself. It was getting to where I was getting really scared about being a failure and kept asking myself "Am I really doing the right thing?" This made sense and helped take some of the pressure off. I wish i would have seen this before my surgery. I would go to the gym for an hour or two hours. It was really punishment. Then one day i HURT myself pretty bad. I called a chiropractor in tears begging for their next available appointment. They had a ton of therapies including a physical therapist on site that taught me HOW to stretch how to use resistance bands to start building muscle in the right areas to prevent future injuries. I still use what she taught me.

I'm 5 years VSG post op. I do feel that intense fitness made a huge impact on shaping my body after WLS and keeping my loose skin as best as it could possible be considering a 120 pound weight loss. I disagree with some of your lose skin comments. My pics show a huge difference in my skin. I did take time to really learn about nutrition and eating whole real foods too but what about your patients who do have a goal at the gym that is NOT just weight loss at the gym yet they have not fixed their head in other areas of their life. Aren't they missing a crucial window of time if they go many many many months (beyond the 6 months) of not going to the gym at all?

vsgpam2012 I get what he's saying, exercise ALONE does not do it, you have to change your eating habits, that is the ONLY way to lose weight. Together (diet and exercise) produces amazing results. 2.5 post op VSG

I think you mistook what he said the biggest thing to keep off the weight is to get your relationship right with food first. If you've ever heard the phrase you can't out work a bad diet. Get the nutrition down first then incorporate the working out.

I am very new to your channel. Enjoying every moment of your knowledge. I am about 7 years of gastric bypass surgery my applauds to you! You are absolutely correct I have been going to the gym I have some incredible results and disappointments. I have reached my plateaus and I have fallen off them many times. The reason I was having such wonderful results was the gym I was going to was Small and for Women only! I didn't have to dress to impress, I didn't have to worry about my skin flapping all over the place. We are like a family! a wonder positive family. Until one day, the business was sold to an owner that was Not so nice. I was still FAT But not as Fat as I was when I first started was an inspiration to Myself as well as others. But Always remained HUMBLE. 60 pounds towards my Goal weight! Then I was Bullied so horribly by the new owner because I was liked by everyone to the point I was told not to return after I offered a job there by way of all my wonderful friends. This not only Broke My Heart But MY Spirit as well. I tried other gyms but it's just not the same. Mental female bonding was no longer in my life. to name a few. Transportation for me is the big issue and just for female workout centers are VERY FEW! Since I have been home 2 years now. I see my spirit down and weight increase. I guess I'm not pissed off enough to do something about it anymore. Yes, you are absolutely Correct! If Your Head is Not Right Your Weight loss will Not Work! So here I go back on the self talk again the inner personal therapy. I'll be having foot surgery very soon and that is going to put me out of commission for some time. I'm going to take some time and get my mind and spirit body back in check. I pray and do for others but now its time for me. On a side note. If I have a personal question where can I contact you? I need guidance. Please respond to this story as to its extremely important to me.

Thanks sooo much I’ve always hated the gym! It’s an unrealistic expectation! I had the gastric bypass and I do understand that the skin will only disappear with a plastic surgeon and not by weight lifting like people constantly say ..... I will not grown an ass suddenly because I was born without one! So there goes another surgery if I want to have one! So retraining myself into eating the healthy foods is the biggest coaching help that I need.

Is there a compromised balance? Or is it all or nothing? I am a little more than 3 months post-op, and I really enjoy doing 20-25 min of light cardio 3-4 x a week. It makes me feel more energized, I sleep better, and I've noticed that it helps manage my mental health disorders too (anxiety and ADD). I don't do any strength training or lifting, and the cardio isn't especially vigorous. It's enough to get my heart pumping, but I'm not covered in sweat or out of breath. I also have an pre-existing baseline as a plus-sized athlete (I ran several half marathons weighing 250-270 lbs, a few years before my RNY surgery). Would it be OK for me to continue the light cardio? I look forward to doing it and don't feel guilty when I don't. It feels more like a treat.

I had been working out hard 4-5 times/week leading up to my surgery and my Dr. cleared me to start strength/resistance training after week 3. I’m down 45 lbs. as of this morning, and I feel great; much better than before my procedure. I specifically wanted the VSG to address Diabetes (which I’d been diagnosed with 40 years ago), sleep apnea, and fatty liver. Since surgery, I am taking zero diabetes meds and managing my sugar. Im due to run labs this week, so I’ll get a better snapshot of where I am metabolically after that. I meet my fluid and protein goals every day. My point is, maybe results vary?
