these overtimes should be getting longer not shorter as for the climate change issue, there is almost a kind of complacency among liberals and mainstreamers like Bill Maher that all we need is a carbon tax and an at least semi-serious policy. But the implications of what Jim Hansen (the leading NASA climatologist who first introduced Congress to the global warming problem in the 1980s) has been saying about 350 since 2007 is that we have LONG PAST the tipping point and are rapidly approaching a point of no return. Even several of the major oil companies have come out in favor of a carbon tax -- which doesn't mean it's bad, but it iindicates together with Hansen that what we need is the kind of total sudden shift that we had with the economy in WWII. And time is really running out -- the point of no return is coming quickly Incidentally, no mention of the G7, including the pledge to go off fossil fuels by 2100; instead of 85 years we need get globally (re:Hansen's climatology, meeting all the otherwise unpredictable variables we've seen since), we need to get to net negative greenhouse gas emissions and in something closer to 8.5 years than to 80. This whole contrast should be banner headline news, and the subject of Congressional hearings in the many years the Democrats had at least the Senate

cloudy Let Saudi Arabia fall to ISIS or any other "terrorist" group and see how fast we push 100% biodiesel. As long as oil companies can suck a profit, we lose. When US gas hits $6 - $7 a gallon [already being paid in Japan and Europe], see how quickly attitudes change especially from the corporations reliant on trucking/shipping cargo.

Pesca's point is dead on: Saying that a government needs to balance its budget the way a family does is just garbage. They are just not the same thing. Families don't mint money, nor do they borrow collossal amounts of money from foreign governments, nor do they have such a structured manner of paying interest on that debt. Families, for that matter, do not build roads, or other major infrastructure, or raise armies. Of course, conservative politicians know this, but cynically exploit the fact that many people will understand the false family/government analogy, without thinking it through (it is simplistic as hell, but therefore comprehensible by almost everyone), and become their footsoldiers for cutting government spending.
@cyninbend
@cyninbend 9 жыл бұрын
Peace Harmony And families can't just refuse to pay their debts if the terms are too onerous either, but countries can and do. Banks can't actually send their army in to collect the money a foreign government owes them, after all. But the sheriff will gladly put a family out of their home or let a collector take the car.

Peace Harmony It's not that the United States has a small amount of debt - It's about $18 trillion dollars.
@saayagain65
@saayagain65 9 жыл бұрын
Peace Harmony Why did you mix two concepts together? Borrowing for investment is fine. Borrowing for current expenditure is bad. If you want to increase current expenditure, the government should increase current tax revenue. By borrowing, the government defers these inevitable tax rises and actually increases the amount of tax that needs to be received due to interest. If the government wants to invest in social housing, infrastructure, factories, plants etc...then by all means borrow and present a comprehensive plan that shows when the debt will be paid off and how it will be paid off. The real issue is that the economy is fueled by debt, public or private. There are two ways to increase your income: become more productive or get more credit. If you go into debt in order to become productive, it makes sense. I.e if you borrow some money to get a machine that helps you produce a good 10 times faster, if makes sense. Your future increased income will pay for the machine. Then after that all the income is yours. If you borrow some money to pay your phone bill, you'll have bailiffs at your door within a year or so. This is capitalism. If you don't like this system, socialism is there for you. :)
@saayagain65
@saayagain65 9 жыл бұрын
cyninbend Do you think the US government can survive without countries lending it money? Going into debt for current operating expenditure is just bad economics. Plain and simple. The spending will not increase future tax revenues therefore it is bad.

1:20 I don't know if Maher's numbers about debt are correct or not, but speaking about the debt in nominal terms doesn't help the discussion. Still the lowest debt to gdp ratio was under the Carter administration in the late '70s: debt was 32.5% of gdp at that time.

Mathew Wickham Actually, if you were intelligent enough to check the statistics, you'd know that every Democratic President has shrunk the size of the federal government every year they are in office, and shrunk federal spending every year as well. It may not please the banks loaning us money but it's the truth. On the other hand, the size of the federal workforce has grown every year a Republican President has been in office with only 2 exceptions: 2 years of President H.W. Bush's term. Reagan and Baby Bush both increased federal spending and the size of government in every year of their 2 terms respectively! That's a total of 18 years of Republican increases (8+8+2), and 16 years of Democratic downsizing. Only 2 years of Republican downsizing. You Repubs don't blow up the debt and the deficit so hugely without giving jobs to all your donors and their kids and crazy uncles......

ChannelMath Actually, we first hit the billion mark during the Civil War. The only $75m I'm aware of was during the Revolutionary War and it was paid back. However, when the Brits came back in 1812, we were forced to borrow again and it's been steadily rising ever since... [www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/11/the-long-story-of-us-debt-from-1790-to-2011-in-1-little-chart/265185/] There are other sources that confirm the information contained at the site listed. FYI - October 22, 1981 was the date we hit the $1 trillion mark. I had just turned 15 years old. Thanks, Baby Boomers!

Good point about other nations having to follow emissions rules cutting down on carbon in the air. However, China, India and Mexico,the nations mentioned in the discussion, are countries which produce American products cheaply....thus there is/will be radical push-back from American companies which do not want to pay fair for labor.

At 06:10 Ron Christie points out China, India and Mexico as countries with high levels of CO2 emissions. That alone is true, but not if you know that the CO2 emissions PER PERSON is much much lower than the US. The US is the real crook here considering they emit waaay more per person than the other three countries listed, despite having much better economic and technological opportunities to change this.

4:05 It's funny that Bill Maher should mention about Israel being one of the leaders in sewage water recycling (which is commendable I have to admit) while at the same time it deprives Palestinians its rightful share of water. (Israel : 350L/person/day; West bank : 60 L/person/day). In fact just today I read an Israeli company closed the taps to tens of thousands of people in West bank during their holy month of fasting. But of course I'm sure it's the fault of the people being denied water, I'm sure they must have done something to deserve it. www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/06/israel-cuts-water-supplies-west-bank-ramadan-160614205022059.html

don FRYE Hardly the 'biggest scandal". It's just another 'fake news' scandal that doesn't amount to much at all and hasn't contributed to all the problems.

Great rebuttal. You dont live here and have no idea about the impact this women has tried to have on our community. This is a real scandal and just because you dont want to look into it doesnt mean its not there. Rachel is a reflection of self hating white liberals all across the nation.
