Brother, Indonesian ancestor before advent of agama Islam is Aji Saka/Ajivaka... It's a little bit different from agama Siwa-Buddha... Let me tell you about the story we believe in the land of Sunda (West Java region)... Malaya = Malay Peninsula (Sumatra, Malaysia) Cambodia = Kamboja Yavana = Jawa/Java Kalingga = Keling Ajivaka = Ajisaka/Aji Saka (Sundanese and Javanese ancestor from Jambudwipa/Bumi Majeti) The island of Java is closely related to Saka dynasty and Aji Saka/Ajivaka. We still use Saka and Pananggalan Jawa, and many places named after the Saka dynasty (such as Kutai, Skanda, Daha in Kediri, Mataram, Kali Serayu/Sarayu river, etc)... Several centuries ago the center of agama Siwa (Hindu) moved from Himalaya to Semeru (East Java) and the center of agama Buddha Mahayana moved from Nalanda to Borobudur... As we know, this happened as a result of the Cholamandala war against Sriwijaya... Since then, Buddhism in India/Jambudwipa (especially Nalanda) has experienced a significant decline... And a few centuries later, there was syncretism between agama Siwa and agama Buddha in Indonesia... Whether this is politics or religious conflict, we do not know... Maybe both... Hopefully there will be clarity regarding the history of the Muria/Maurya dynasty... The story of Ajisaka/Aji Saka is believed to have started at that time (Maurya dynasty)... We need to know where is Ayodhya, since Ajisaka/Ajivaka came from that kingdom... During Ashoka time, many refugees from Kalingga settled on the island of Java (they lost the war against the Muria/Maurya dynasty)... In subsequent developments, they build the Medang Keling kingdom together with the Sunda-Galuh kingdom (the forerunner of the Medang Mataram kingdom)... Aji Saka/Ajivaka then considered as a unifying figure and his story is still around today ... The Saka calendar, aksara Hanacaraka/Ajisaka are still used in Java island... Strangely, the story about Aji Saka/Ajivaka does not exist in India... There is another version in West Java (Sunda-Parahyangan) that said 'Hanacaraka datasawala' from aksara Ajisaka/Ajivaka describes the conflict between the schools of thought at that time (agama Siwa and agama Buddha)... Fortunately it ended peacefully several centuries later with the construction of Candi Prambanan and Candi Borobudur... In West Java (Sunda) there is a story that says Jiwa-Jawi-Jawa related with Ajisaka/Ajiwaka/Ajivaka... Va became Wa in basa Sunda... The island of Java is named after Ajivaka (another version is named after jawawut/millet)... The concept of the soul/jiwa/atma/sukma, buana alit and buana ageung in the Sundanese area (alit = small, big ageung) is also coincidentally similar to the pancamahabuta in the story Dewaruci/Nawaruci... In addition, hyang and ong are very similar at first glance when written in the Sundanese version of the aksara Ajisaka (Hanacaraka)... Now the term sembahyang (sembah = worship, hyang = ong/om/aum = god) is still used in West Java/Sunda as a synonym for the word sholat (Islamic prayers)... Like the word nga-hyang/ngahiang which is a synonym for moksha, and the word ajian which is often used as a synonym for mantra (to honor Aji Saka and ajian Triwikrama)... Because this story is told by word of mouth, inevitably its historical value is reduced... Whether intentional or unintentional... There is a theory that says that the Malay/Malaya, Kamboja/Cambodians, and Sunda-Javanese/Yavanas are indeed from India/Jambudwipa/Bumi Majeti and have a close relationship with the Saka dynasty... It can be seen from the story of the kingdom of Ayodhya in Ramayana (Javanese version)... They came from India before moving to Yunnan, Irrawaddy river, Mekong river, Borneo/Baruna/Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Java island... For some reasons (which I cannot mention here) they left India. The key word lies in the history of the Muria/Maurya dynasty. Aji Saka/Ajivaka with Ashoka... As a historical reminder, the name Kali Serayu/Sarayu is immortalized as the name of a river in Central Java... Yes, that's the story circulating in the community... FYI: Upacara nyadran (upacara = ceremony in basa Sunda, nyadran = sradha), ruwatan (to remove Buta Kala's influence, cleansing sukerta, etc), puasa/shaum (upawasa), and seren taun (to honor Sanghyang Sri Laksmi) are still carried out in West Java even though many of them are Muslims... Regarding conversion to agama Islam from agama Siwa-Buddha, of course it is not strange because there are many similarities between the teachings of Aji Saka/Ajivaka and Islam, especially in the part of fasting (puasa/upawasa), and concept of atma/jiwa/sukma/soul. There are many similarities between the teachings of Jabariyah with Aji Saka/Ajivaka, and similarities between Advaita Vedanta with the teachings of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti/Wahdatul Wujud... In fact, the largest Islamic sultanate in Indonesia was named the Islamic Mataram Sultanate. Agama Islam is considered as continuation of agama Siwa-Buddha and now the motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Tan Hana Dharma Mangrwa is used as the basis of the state (written on the national symbol Garuda Pancasila and means unity in diversity and there is no duality in truth)... This quotation (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika) comes from canto 139, stanza 5. The full stanza reads as follows: Rwâneka dhâtu winuwus Buddha Wiswa, Bhinnêki rakwa ring apan kena parwanosen, Mangka ng Jinatwa kalawan Siwatatwa tunggal, Bhinnêka tunggal ika tan hana dharma mangrwa. Translation: It is said that the well-known Buddha and Shiva are two different substances. They are indeed different, yet how is it possible to recognise their difference in a glance, since the truth of Jina (Buddha) and the truth of Shiva is one. They are indeed different, but they are of the same kind, as there is no duality in Truth. This motto then written on the Indonesian national emblem, Garuda Pancasila... So, this is the reason how agama Siwa-Buddha motto is accepted by the majority of Muslims in Indonesia... Agama Islam is considered as continuation of agama Siwa-Buddha...
