You should look at the hydrogel scientists made that makes a spider silk when the liquid evaporates. And there's a snail adhesive that scientists made that mimics snails mucus and held a 80kg man (I think maybe more) it's also a hydrogel that also needs water to evaporate to stick but when you add water it unsticks. Maybe you could combine them both and see if that works

Honestly man as much as I would love to have a pair of web-shooters that looked and functioned like they did in comics/movies/video games etc., and somehow allowed me to swing around a city without dying , I'd honestly be just as happy to have a bulky gauntlet version that functioned like 2009 spiderman Noir's organic version , I'm talking no real web-lines or web-projectiles , just the webs kinda splattering everywhere , or creating short-ranged web-nets. What I'm trying to say is , I'm fine with whatever we get as long as it truly works.

I've never been too attached to the idea of the web line shooting at a single point. I think you had the right idea with the rotating multi shot web shooter before. Increasing surface area from the multiple points making contact with whatever wall or surface you're aiming at, and the coiling of all the sprayed webs obviously being what makes up for the spider web's less than satisfactory tensile strength. Although it would obviously have to be taken to an extreme to hold your own weight, like you described in the video. It'd end up looking more like a janky human sized attempt at what the Darwin's bark spider does (of whom I'm sure you've probably heard of hundreds of times haha), than Spider-Man shooting a single strand of web at a building. Idk, I'm not an expert lol
@theAmazing2 жыл бұрын
People get attached to the idea of coiling strands together as if it magically increases the strength of the material, but that is not the case. The reason why ropes and cables do this is because if an individual strand breaks, then the rest of the rope is still perfectly intact. Regardless of coiling, (reminder that I tested a braided kevlar line in this video) the material properties I presented still take effect, you need the required cross sectional area of the cable, braided/coiled or not, to hold the required load.

The only solution I can think of to swing between buildings is to launch soft projectiles that expand when they hit any surface and an electro-adhesion is activated, similar to the master chief's grappling hook but with projectiles that don't damage glass

That is an interesting idea! I wonder if that type of adhesion could be strong enough IRL.

On the subject of swinging, the "arms rip off" argument is generally just a brush-off. There's often really no point to discussing the topic with the individuals that don't inherently understand why it's not possible (and thereby, won't listen to reason). The physics of swinging from one stationary position to another is evident - it's possible; but, jumping from a rooftop, falling several hundred feet, then trying it is of course not (at least not without, yes, ripping your arms off or just flat out causing you to fall to your death). This causes people to mistakenly believe that swinging is possible, even in a limited context. Even if you somehow created a substance never before seen by man that was exactly like the webbing from the comics and movies, there is no way every condition (within the formula and the slight deviations of how it's mixed, within the shooter w.r.t. pressure or temperature, or within the environment) would be so on-the-nose as to allow it. I quite frankly don't think there's much that can be said to discourage people from wanting to swing, even with the data and figures displayed; I think it's just a matter of naivete that they need to overcome on their own. Similar to "You'll shoot your eye out" from A Christmas Story. It all seems like a pointless brush-off and just adults being stingy, until Ralphie hurts his eye exactly as they stated. Hopefully, these individuals will never have to experience injury to realize this.
@theAmazing2 жыл бұрын
Haha that is a great analogy for it!

@@Ebowleslap "to say anybody who doesn't figure out they couldn't jump off a building couldn't be reasoned with is kind of rude" Please reread what you wrote here. If someone has any illusions about jumping off a building, and it's not just fantasy to them, they *are* too far gone to be reasoned with. It should be common sense that you should not do this. It should be common sense that it's not possible; that it's fiction, and that if it were possible, then there would already be myriad people doing it. Again, this should be common sense - if someone is unable to understand that inherently, they'd be too naive to understand the physics behind it, or would ignore it anyway. In my first "Small Talks" video, I explained this already. Granted, I didn't do it very elegantly, as I myself was a lot younger at the time, and I left off with stating how you'd have to figure out how strong your formula was, how cohesive it was, etc. to determine if you could swing. The point was to encourage people to take what they had, at any point in the process, and test it (even minimally) to reveal it's not up to the task. But apparently that didn't come across. Nobody has to have "already thought as long and hard as [I]" to realize you shouldn't jump off a building. If they insist this is a good idea, then yes, they are devoid of reason.
@SpiderDevice2 жыл бұрын
@Erik Bowles-Lapointe And to address your latter point - if a kid has a silly string launcher, will he jump off a roof with it? Yes. I have seen it. "If he has a brain, then probably not" You've proven my point. Kids are not smart. "And nobody young enough to do such a thing has a web fluid web shooter" but they often think they do. I have seen, and been contacted by, multiple people who have mixed a meager formula then jumped off even a low roof to test it. Why? Because they're, like, 10, and their prefrontal cortex hasn't developed yet. This worries me. Granted, it was my own naivete that caused me to not just put a disclaimer at the beginning of my videos and call it good. It's also worth noting that the physics of swinging (and why it's not possible) were already detailed years ago by White_widow on our RealWebTech site. It was my understanding, for a time, that most people would read this site when coming into the project. But, I hadn't realized how far it had grown beyond the confines of the SHH forums. Again, that's my own naivete. I don't plan on making the same mistakes again.

Great video! I've been thinking about how I could develop web fluid, and to do this, not only chemistry would be needed, but also technology and shooting technique. To begin with, the fluid should be an adhesive rather than a cohesive, why do I say that? Simple, the web shooter uses the spinneret system, which makes the spider webs that pass through the holes of the nozzle intertwine, creating a stronger and more resistant union due to the adhesive factor and maybe even sticking to the nozzle (and having this in mind, make a retractable web shooter, not as much as a real one, but something interesting). In case it doesn't stick to the nozzle, to catch the spider silk in your hands you would have to shoot with your arm bent and stretch your arm to catch the webs, wearing non-stick gloves so your hands doesn't stick. Regarding the swing issue, for obvious reasons you won't go at 100m/s (although it doesn't sound that impossible either, but you would have to have extraordinary physical abilities), what we will do is a swing like the first swing of TASM1 or like the one from Spider -Man PS1 game, but with both hands. To avoid being dismembered in falls, you must always aim diagonally to create a swing curve, if you are very close to the ground, climb with yout hands the spider webs, hardest as fuck, but better than die. YOU SHOULD NEVER SHOOT UPWARDS TO STOP A FALL, THIS WILL ONLY CAUSE DAMAGE If you made it this far, thank you so much for reading all of this! I'm not really someone who knows very well all this about the conditions of being Spider-Man, I'm just a guy with a lot of free time, but still learning so many things is great and fun, I would also like to make my own web shooter, but I don't have the resources or much information to give a project that I'm sure can work (I really have an idea, but if you want me to talk about it, tell me and I'll tell you about it in another comment). Likewise, I don't feel that this is impossible, an Italian youtuber has already created a web shooter with three types of shooting/web, the video in question is kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKC4pXeLhLOeeas I hope this community continues to grow, and that soon we will see people swing through the streets (and not die)

Hey, I was thinking about how not even the strongest superglues can support our weight. What if the end of the web line was bigger? More surface area? Like, spinneretts should be delayed for 0.5 seconds and then it should spin. It'll hopefully give an effect like in the movie where the end of the web is spread out.

The air doesn't contribute to the strength of the cable, only the cable material on its own, you'd still need the required cross section of pure cable material for the required strength, and thus the required volume as well.
