REAL WORLD Review of Sirui 35mm & 100mm 1.6x lenses
What is an Anamorphic lens?
An anamorphic lens is designed with additional glass elements that squeeze the image horizontally, allowing filmmakers to capture a wider field of view than the film or digital sensor would ordinarily allow.
In production there are typically two classes of lenses - anamorphic and spherical. Spherical lenses are the most common and project images onto a camera’s film or digital sensor without affecting their aspect ratio.
Anamorphic lenses expand the frame horizontally, accommodate more shooting width, and can output shots with a wide-format specification ratio without cropping. This has a significant advantage in film. It allows filmmakers to achieve wide aspect ratios without sacrificing resolution via cropping, which would typically have to be done when using a spherical lens to achieve widescreen aspect ratios.
Anamorphic lenses also have distinct features which provide a unique look on screen. These include oval bokeh, light flares, greater depth of field and the widescreen ratio.

I would love to use opengate on my sonys too. I wonder though, if there is some odd vignetting or other distortion that Sony doesn't want us to see on the top and bottom of the sensor? Maybe the QA allows for flawed sensor for that range.

Nah, it uses the full 3:2 sensor for photos and there's no vignetting.

Note: The squeeze factor is inconsistent on the Sirui Venus line, the focus disctance has a effect on the squeeze. On the Sirui Saturn it's fixed.

Yes. So does the very expensive cinema quality Hawk V-Lite 1.3x anamorphic. Cinematographers and DPs don’t care about this. It’s personally preference

Thank you - I have just taken delivery of the 50mm t2.9 1.6x and the 1.25x converter. I'm now having severe second thoughts about the usefulness of the adaptor and considering returning it and buying another lens (35mm or 100mm) instead as a better use of funds. Any thoughts would be appreciated, I'm leaning towards the 100mm as there will then be a greater range of scenarios covered than the 50 + 35mm. Thanks again

Thank you Jason Morris for your feedback on the Sirui anamorphic lenses. I would like to invest in a 50mm but I can't find any information. I have a Lumix S1 and I don't know if this camera is able to send the video stream through the HDMI output decompressed to display the return correctly on a TV? Or if it needs to go through an external monitor/recorder in between? Which would significantly increase the budget.

In the small amount of time I’ve been researching these lenses I’ve gone from loving the lens flares to really hating them. They’re so overpowered and the blue just makes it look like a cheap sci fi effect. Would much prefer neutral flares, but even still I think the horizontal flare is just way too much.

Nice Video! I got some questions: Do you know why I got a different squeeze factor when I use the squeeze adapter on the 35mm and then on the 75mm? And do you know how I can mount the adapter correctly? Because even when I adapt it on the 35mm, I got a really weird looking frame and if I adapt it correctly its kind of not as stable on the lens

I've been interested in these lenses, but they are still a bit too sharp and don't have the softer qualities that I want for a cinema style lens. Maybe it'll render a bit differently on something like the FX9, but do you think that these are still a bit too sharp?

they are much softer than the aps-c versions. it softens out more with the anamorphic adapter

Cinema lenses are usually larger is focus throw. But it should effect too many people. Hand held or manual focus systems it’s better. Follow focus systems can be designed to account for this. Always work arounds

Jason, I shoot alot of property videos on the Sony a7IV, what would you recommend as the best full frame wide angle lens for sony? the 16-35mm f2.8 is great but super expensive, but that wide angle works great for property use case.

tamron 17-28 if you want a wide angle zoom lens. otherwise it depends if you put it into slow motion and need wider lenses

Thank you for a great video :) Did you notice if the lenses changed the anamorphic squeeze factor a little bit when focusing close and far (I’ve heard rumors about this but I’m not sure it’s true), and if so, does focusing on the 1.25x adapter remedy this? Another thing: do you think it could be possible (and advisable) to stack two of the 1.25x adapters onto each other to make any lens a ~1.56x anamorphic lens? 🫣

Hi Jason. Quick question. I tested the 1.25x adapter on my Sirui 50mm 1.6x, and found that if I was shooting handheld I was getting heavy overall skewing on the image. Did you run into that issue?

If you have ibis on it needs to be turned off. Anamorphic lenses don’t work well with ibis

Right click the video clip and go to properties and set the desqueeze factor(1.6, 1.33, 2.0 etc). This is in the NLE davinci resolve. For FCP you need to do math.

I use the ninja V for monitoring but that’s still very small to be able to see the focal point. You’re probably better off doing a hand pull as this style of focus racking doesn’t give stability and support on the smaller rigs
