The big reason for the aluminum vs aluminium (and similar things) stems from two things: Firstly, in past, the royal scribes were paid by the letter, and thus added unnecessary letters (especially the french) in order to get paid more for the same job; meanwhile, later on, people who wanted to get things printed would typically pay by the letter, and thus would cut out as many unnecessary letters as possible. The second thing is that in (I believe) the 1900s, some high class brittish people decided to change how they pronounce and spell certain words, such as changing aluminum to aluminium, in order to sound more posh. (BTW, evidence suggests the "correct" one is aluminum, since that is what the guy who invented/discovered the alloy called his metal.)

The element Al was originally called "Alumium" after "alum", from which it was refined. Later, some people thought it should be called "Aluminum", like platinum, and that spelling stuck in the US. Then other people thought "Aluminium" would be better, like titanium, and most of the world went that way.

You keep missing the efficiency bumps. If a consumer is within a few squares of a producer that produces what's for consumer consumes, you get an 8% buff in efficiency . So like if you surround the home appliance manufacturer with electronics shops it can get 150% or 160% efficiency. If you don't go for the efficiencies you'll be way behind the curves for production for most things.

7:30 so the reason Americans and Brits use different spellings for "aluminum" (yes, i'm american) is because the British decided that "aluminum" didn't sound classic enough and decided to add in the extra "i". The original spelling of the word (it had been called other things before, but I'm not counting those because nobody knew what aluminum really was back then) was actually "alumium" coined by Sir Humphry Davy in 1908, only for him to decide that "aluminum" was the better choice 4 years later in 1812. So basically, Sir Humphry Davy (born in Penzance, England) said "hey, here's the element called aluminum" and the entire rest of England said "f**k you, I want an extra letter in there"
