Also, how about what the literal video’s topic is, where Saladin can’t get a single of his soldiers to attack Richard other than the knights? 2. The Muslims didn’t even win this battle, and they outnumbered the enemy by a massive amount. Richard beats Saladin, deal with it.

I believe that there are two reasons the Muslim army didn't attack King Richard's army. 1 they knew the Christian army would fight to the death beside their King and losses would be great for them even if they won. 2 they were mad at Saladin for not letting them have the spoils of Jaffa. I do not think that Saladin was strategically wrong for upholding his promise to the people of Jaffa, as it sets a precident of keeping his word. Cities are more likely to surrender quickly if they know they will be spared and if word gets out that Saladin keeps his promises in that regard his sieges of other castles and cities will be easier. I think that in this instance it is a lack of discipline and unit cohesion for a majority of Saladin's army that gave him a disadvantage, excluding the Mameluke's. It was King Richard's boldness that pressed the evident advantage. Great video!

The Third Crusade was a successful expedition for Richard, and a triumph for Christendom. It was a painful and humiliating defeat for Saladin. Historian Andrew Ehrenkreutz, says that “in spite of overwhelming odds in their favor, the Muslims could neither outfight the Christian contingent nor simultaneously protect Ascalon and Jerusalem. Considering the military organization and defense oriented economy of the Muslim countries and in view of the strategic advantages they secured in 1187-89, the terms of the 1192 armistice must be regarded as a humiliating concession the Christian invaders imposed on Islam.” -Ehrenkreutz, Saladin, p. 217. Historian Thomas Madden explains that “the Third Crusade was by almost any measure a highly successful expedition. Most of Saladinís victories in the wake of Hattin were wiped away. The crusader kingdom was healed of its divisions, restored to its coastal cities, and secured in a peace with its greatest enemy.” -Madden, New Concise History of the Crusades, p. 95.

A remark that sounds remarkably like a modern assessment of a modern battlefield. Richard knew he had to return to England because his brother John was usurping the throne. He couldn't hold on to Jerusalem so he did not attack it. Sala Adin meanwhile knew Richard could take it & was in dread of the attack that never came. Saladin and King Richard were able to negotiate a truce, not a win for king Richard, or Saladin,
@RealCrusadesHistory5 жыл бұрын
The truce was a win for the Christians, since it included recognition of the territory Richard had conquered from Saladin. It was a loss for Saladin, since he had to agree to recognize that Richard had taken territory from him. The Third Crusade was a net gain for the Christians and a net loss for the Saracens.
@markr33565 жыл бұрын
Real Crusades History Technically it was a win for the crusaders when you look at it like that but wasn't the main purpose of the third crusade to retake Jerusalem? In that case it seems like both Richard and Saladin won and lost. In some ways Richard won by retaking the coast but in other ways lost by "only" retaking the coast and not capturing Jerusalem. In some ways Saladin won by keeping control over most of the Levant, most importantly Jerusalem, but in other ways lost by no longer controlling the coast due to Richards conquest.

I have always wanted to know if this was true or not but was the reason Richard didn't attack Jerusalem was because he had only 4000 men under his command and the French and German crusaders with drew from the holy land? or was it simply because he thought he won the war and decided to got fight elsewhere? as he was known to fight a new war almost immediately after the last war he fought had ended.
@CapitanCookies7 жыл бұрын
Valrock Mograth I think he had more than 4000. That aside he refused to attack the holy city because he did not have the men nor the supply lines to mount a siege and hold the city. Had he attacked it he would've been defeated by Saladin or he would've taken the city just for it to be lost again due to the lack of men to defend it.
@simonlewis3627 жыл бұрын
Richard the Lionheart and his men could have taken Jerusalem easily. They were well equipped and well armored. The main reason that he decided not to take Jerusalem is that the Crusaders will not able to defend the city once the Muslims counter-attacked.

You're incorrect. Richard defeated Saladin in two major field battles, Arsuf (1191) and Jaffa (1192). He also defeated Saladin's forces in many smaller battles. Richard's crusade was a brilliant victory over Saladin, ending the Sultan's drive against the crusaders and securing the coastal territories for the Christians. We have this thing called google. You might do a simple internet search for the Battle of Jaffa (1192).

@@RealCrusadesHistory but the ultimate goal was Jerusalem not the coastal cities which was never achieved. Richard knew how to earn a victory but did not knew how to win a war. Saladin saved Jerusalem diplomatically allowing Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem and Ascalon was to be destroyed once more also the Crusaders hold was confirmed on some coastal cities. Third Crusade is like a game in which you finish side missions but fail in story missions. Jaffa delayed Richard's planned attack on Beirut and due to tensions at home Richard had to go back thus Jerusalem still under Saladin and the Crusade doomed.

Franks (Crusaders 2nd), They were of giant statue, men of iron, with flashing eyes, who spilt blood like water. Under the banners of Conrad was a troop of women, accoutered for battle like the men. Their leader had golden spurs and buskins, and they called her Golden-foot. These people blew away the Mohammedans in open combat, but they were courageous and they knew the ways of the desert. The Normans also tore apart large armies with the mighty impact of their ferocious charge.

It's the fault of both sides. Both sides were after lands and wealth. No one was a victim.

+Simon Lewis Actually, Muslims conquered 2/3 of Old Christendom during the 700's (i.e. Middle East and North Africa), and then went on to Spain. They were fought off in France, and raids along the coast were fought against. The Normans actually had to retake Sicily from the Muslims as well. Crusades would give way to The Holy Leagues, and even most of the actions done by those guys were largely defensive. While there were some in the Crusades who MAY have been after lands, this wasn't the case for the vast majourity; Crusading was risky and costly business; you were fighting in a land far away from home, didn't enjoy modern day logistics, and any "heirs" and rulers who went crusading risked having their holdings threatened by rivals back home. In fact, that's why Richard the Lion Heart returned to Europe.

Nemo003, was that a statement or an opposition? I'm not really sure if you're opposing my previous statement. Anyway, if you're curious, I'm a Roman Catholic.
@nemo00367 жыл бұрын
+Simon Lewis Both. On the one hand, neither side was innocent. On the other hand, Muslims inflicted first blood and they were the ones on the offensive a lot of the time. If we're talking "wealth and lands", these seem to have been a result, rather than a primary goal, particularly with the 1st Crusade; despite being among the most successful, it was probably the least organized.

Had logistics & infighting not been issues for the Crusaders, likely every muslim territory would have been under European control. The Christians had superior fighting men, weapons & tactics in the main... The muslims had the advantage of closer proximity to the theatre, thus easing supply difficulties as compared to the Europeans.

@RealCrusadesHistory4 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Richard NEVER lost a battle to Saladin. He won them all. And yes, Saladin's army did back down in defeat before Richard and a handful of his knights, this is absolutely what happened. Saladin's own biographer, Baha ad-Din, reports this in vivid detail and the Christian sources confirm it. Everything in this video is absolutely correct. I've done my homework, it's time for you to do yours.

Incorrect. Richard drove Saladin's men off the beach first before he even entered the city. Nobody let him into Jaffa, he and his men entered and cleared the streets of Saladin's men. King Richard personally led his men through the streets of Jaffa, cutting down Saladin's men at every turn. It was an incredible moment in history.
