The Viking Invasions of Ireland, 795-1014: The Complete History

Over the course of the ninth and tenth centuries, the Viking Age was fully aflame across northwestern Europe. While the Danes assailed England and France, Norse attacks made Ireland an almost perpetual battleground. Vikings seized control of ports such as Dublin, Limerick, and Wexford, where they established powerful strongholds and thriving trading hubs. In response, Ireland’s kings grew more militant and more united under the high king, who would take the fight to the Vikings. We’ll explore the complete history of Ireland’s Viking Age, from the first raid on Rathlin Island in 795, to the epic Battle of Clontarf in 1014, in which Ireland’s celebrated High King Brian Boru faced the forces of the Norse King of Dublin, Sihtric Silkbeard.

Status quo for an average man would have been to toil in the field or tend someone else's cattle until death, with probably few or no marriage prospects and likely no inheritance. As a soldier you could earn wealth, titles, land, and potentially marriage prospects. You could also die horribly but death is inevitable anyway.

Other Clans like the Mac Egans would have supplied Brehons (legal experts) this is the case for many important roles in Irish society. It eventually changed under Shane an diomas O Neil, he began training the lay people in the 1550s . Hugh O Neil did it in the 1590s during the Nine years war.

I hope you don't fear and hate today's Norwegians because of what Norwegian Vikings did a thousand years ago in your country. I myself totally agree with the silly idea of some sort of "hero"-narrative, they were a brutal and merciless people that didn't come to Ireland for anything good, but mostly for slavery and set themselves up as rulers, in a time when Christianity in Ireland had developed the island into the center of Christian civilization, and much of what survives of ancient texts could have been completely lost if not for the hard work of the monks, since libraries in the rest of Europe at the time was a died out phenomena. The monastery societies also spread all sorts of other knowledge and technology previously unknown all around the island, and greatly blessed the people. Also the spread of Christianity happened because of Irish missionaries all the way south to Italy again. Only for the pope in Italy to bless the Normans and how they came and set up the rule that continued the rest of the millennia, inherited by the English.

Far out if we descend from the Irish most of us have Viking blood in our veins anyway. Ireland apparently has the highest rates of PKU globally. A genetic condition that is inherited from the Scandinavians. Of course when it showed up in my family I knew nothing about the Irish Viking history. The Viking invasion of Ireland is exaggerated. The Vikings were only able to secure toeholds in Dublin, Waterford, Limerick & Galway. They were tolerated by the local kings because of the trade they brought. They were prevented from securing any significant toeholds in Ulster due to the ferocity of the Ulster clans.

It isn't only The Viking invasions that's exaggerated - there's much of Irish history that's been re-written by Christianity. Brigid of Kildare for instance - she _never_ converted to Christianity, in fact fought tooth and nail against it and the people [Pagans] that supported her continued that fight long after she died. Christianity wasn't put upon _us_ by the sword, no, because we resisted it where everyone else submitted. It was put upon us slowly over the course of centuries. Where do you think the story about Brigid's magic cloak came from? Do you really think God expanded out her cloak to cover such a massive tract of land? We held this land by way of force. She went to speak with that king but he didn't 'give' her anything - he was simply made aware of what he didn't or couldn't have. Brigid was a tree worshipper, The Oak - that place on the hill there in Kildare, it used to be covered in Oak trees and was a very special place to Pagans. She would _never_ have cut down those trees and built a Christian church out of them and the fact that Christianity says she did tells you all you need to know about it. Tfuh!

An informative and well presented historical documentary, until the end. The Anglo Normans were also proto Vikings, with a common ancestry with the previous wave of Viking invaders. That shared ancestry, combined with the existing Norse presence in northern Scotland suggests that the rivalry of clans/macs was continuous and multi layered.

How interesting the story of how Torgill! That is because this assasination (beardless youths disguised as women) is identical to the story in norse mythology on how Tor (or "Thor", as you would say) got his hammer (Mjølner) back, after it was stolen by a jotun (one of the "bad gods", in a way, the "Jotun" were the enemies of the "æsir" - the norse gods), named Trym. It is called "Trymskvadet" (the poem of Trym). According to the story, Tor disguised himself as the goddess Freya, and agreed to marry this jotun (the jotun, Trym, wanted Freyas hand in marriage). And then, as Tor found his hammer on the wedding night at the estate of the Jotun, he used it and killed them all. I´m wondering if there is a connection between these to stories? Had the monk who wrote down the story on how Torgill was killed, heard this norse story?

I, for one, am more inclined to think my ancestors better than the likes of someone like you. Maybe all your anchestors were mythical, warrior lords and high Princes. I suspect not. Most people were dirt poor and had little or nothing. You should read some archeology. Not very romantic but educational. I studied archeology way back when, and participated in digs in the UK, Greenland and Sweden. That sure wasn’t romantic but very dirty. I didn’t find anything but a friend found a dead cat. Not viking.

The Gaelic idea of a King was quite different then that of a "Rex" in the rest of Western Europe. Political power in medieval Ireland was based on controlling cattle and maintaining the allegiance of lesser clans, so I would assume it would be up to wider society to recognize someone as a king or not. There are examples of different members of prominent clans like the Uí Nialls declaring themselves High-King of Ireland without actually controlling most of the island.

I was born in Norway, took a dna ancestry test recently, I live in UK so they had no idea where 8 was originally from so I was curious what they would come back with. Result was 90% western Norway, which correlates perfectly with my family tree which goes back 6-700 years and shows pure western Norway plus a little bit Swedish. Also it came back with 5% Swedish and surprise 5% Irish. So yes I think the Irish must be something that happened more than 6-700 years ago so could well be from Viking times.

Roman brought coinage to Ireland first surely. While they didn't invade or conquerer Ireland they most certainly traded with the Irish and you can be sure Roman coinage was used.

The Romans never made it to Ireland. According to Lars Brownworth, the Vikings brought coinage to Ireland. Definitely the first coins struck in Ireland were struck by Vikings in the 10th century.

I've seen many films and documentaries on the Vikings. I have also been overseas several times and visited the ships and Viking museums. I even had a fellow classmate and friend who is a Norwegian national, but this is THE FIRST time I've ever heard about Vikings in the slave trade! My school friend used to say that the Norwegian people are ashamed of the Vikings. I thought it was because of the plundering under the influence of "fluesopp," an hallucinogenic mushroom native to Norway. So what? Just about every country was engaged on some level with stealing other peoples' property. Now, I suddenly realize it was the slave trade she was referring to. I wish there were more documentaries on the Vikings. And Ireland. We know so little about these countries from the misty past. 🍃

To be fair, I think the Vikings were just one player in a much larger slave economy, and people throughout history have engaged in the practice. But they were quite effective and ruthless in plying that trade. They were a crucial supplier to the Muslim states and the Byzantines.
