@@realgambadogamingI have an entry for you In Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, there is a sidequest you can trigger in one of the Dungeons called Tida (which in itself is a whole unsettling and disturbing entry all on its own), where if you examine the trunk of an old pine tree you can find an old love letter. If you happen to go around talking to NPCs, you'll eventually get two separate Elderly people who will ask you to read the letter. If you let them, they will act shocked and will disappear afterwards and nothing really comes of it until you go back to Tida later When you go back to that dungeon, at the same tree you found the letter, you can find the dead bodies of the old couple laying together as they reunited and died (due to the toxic miasma on the air in the storyline) Its kind of wholesome I guess because they were reunited in love and died together, but at the same time it was downright unsettling, because 1.) You don't really expect to see their dead bodies just laying there to be found, you most likely would've forgotten about it by the time you travel back to Tida And 2.) You realize that you technically helped them both commit sewerslide. Another unsettling thing is if you talk to one of the girl NPCs back in the town where the old man was, you come across his grand daughter who will mention that her grandfather just up and left one day and hasnt come back and is unaware that he will never be coming back

I've got one, in Luigi's Mansion, Chauncey's description says "He cries loudly and never sleeps through the night, but since he was born a ghost, this seems natural". Being born a ghost has very creepy and disturbing implications.
@purplemist710 ай бұрын
I always assumed that description was Nintendo's way of clearing up any speculation as to why there was an infant ghost, as the implication of a death of one so young and innocent might have been too dark for them and something they wished to avoid. Hence, Chauncey was born a ghost. Of course, his sister, Sweet Pea (I believe her name was), was confirmed to have died in her description and I don't think she was much older.

At one point, she heard her father's voice tell her to stay in the nightmare and forget about the Lunar Wing (The item used to stop these nightmares). It also confirms the reason why she was on Marvelous Bridge in the previous game: She was trying to return the Lunar Wing to the Pokémon Cresselia.

Seeing the Harvest Moon one (which I agree always seemed eerie) reminded me of something in Friends of Mineral Town that seriously freaked me out as a kid: in most of those games you’re advised to put your animals back in the barn/coop by the end of the day since they can get sick if they’re left out overnight, but one time when I was playing I wasn’t able to get them back inside fast enough. Then nighttime strikes (which is sounded with a ringing bell) and IMMEDIATELY this loud wild dog barking starts. I’m like what the hell is THAT? and try to locate the source. A black dog or wolf enters the farm from the entrance and starts terrorizing my livestock, biting them and making them become sick. I started attacking the wild dog with my hammer and it eventually bugged off but as far as I know the game itself doesn’t warn you about this anywhere and it doesn’t always happen. If your dog grows up he can fight off the wild dog and bite it back though which is badass. Still, the sound of the coarse barking it made haunts me lol

It wasn't in the original game, but apparently in the remake of return to dreamland you can hear the boss screaming "KIRBY" once defeated. It's more of a blink and you'll miss it thing but it's oddly spooky considering that the villain is still sentient even when possessed.

Magolor Soul! I think there was also an unused disturbing death scream in the original but the Deluxe version either added the unused file or uses a whole new one. I don't even know whether the scream was Mistilteinn (the entity within the Master Crown, which we learn from the Magolor Epilogue in its final boss theme's title) pulling the name from Magolor's memories to curse the warrior that foiled its plans, or Magolor himself crying out for help. We do get confirmation that Magolor survives this event from the Magolor Epilogue as well. Edit: It seems they did in fact end up adding the original unused file as the death scream! Magolor's first boss form also had a defeat scream, but it was less "poor misguided soul whose body has been twisted into an eldritch prison crying out for help" and more "villain has been fatally wounded but masks the pain with rage as they scream"

Epic Mickey was so weird. Here's what stuck with me while I played it as a kid: - The Ticket Booth area in Gremlin Village is one of the first places you arrive at and the atmosphere stays weird for the rest of the game. - Even when it was day, the sky was constantly dark or a smog yellow. - You could spray Mean Street and Ostown with paint thinner and delete colorful sections of the place. You could also spray characters and make them dissolve into puddles on the ground. Then they just lay there screaming with arms flailing out of the puddle. - You find deteriorating animatronics of Mickey's friends who plead with him to be put back together. - Mickeyjunk Mountain, especially The Heaps. Not only is it creepy, but the Mickey merchandise there is massive and unusable. - The Stretching Room in Lonesome Manor had disturbing pictures on the wall you had to shuffle correctly in order to get to the next room.

You can probably fill an entire iceberg with creepy moments from Majora's Mask, but one I don't see talked about that often is when you fail the Kafei sidequest at one of the very last steps, and you let the sun mask drops into the hole and a cutscene plays. The music just stops and Kafei is seemingly trapped forever in that room (of course ignoring that the moon will destroy everyone anyway shortly).

Not only are the aliens are modeled after a real life alien myth (The Flatwoods Monster) But if you fail to stop them, they will take not only the cows, but Romani herself as well, she'll come back a day later, but will basically be catatonic and will shake her head around like she has a bad headache

I think one of my favorite things about Vanessa's Manor is that apparently during the game's development, playtesters were too scared to actually play through the level so a warp to the final room was made. The warp is still in the game and can be found by crawling through a hidden hole on the left wall of the Manor's basement. Also aside from being regular NPCs you can find throughout the game, I think some of the frozen characters are also scraped beta NPCs.

The thing that also is a bit upsetting in psychonauts is that, one that specializes in mind reacing and thought manipulation, when meela found her orphanage burning, she couldn’t help but read the minds of her kids and hearing the internal screams as they burned, begging for her help and screaming in pain. It’s also why they’re so loud to begin with, as those voices must have been booming in her mind when she experienced it. It’s a mix of sorrow and fear from that entry.

I remember being super freaked out by the basement area in Ghostbusters Wii in the home base. It had the painting of vigo and tobin‘s spirit guide, which contained all of the pages you collect during the missions of the game. To me it was very creepy to go down there and look at the book because it would take you to a screen with the book pages open on it and it also had a black background. A lot of the pictures in the book had eerie designs and were accompanied by this creepy music. I would never go down there because it always made me feel very uneasy. Also there was this weird goo monster that you would encounter in one of the last levels of the game where you go into some sort of sewage system of an old building located on a desolate island. That goo monster had eyes all over its body and made me have nightmares. I then didn‘t play the game for a very long time. It was a very cool game, though it was kind of broken because it would crash the wii at a few instances. Maybe my copy was haunted lul. Edit: I should also add that one factor that made it even more creepy was that the music would eventually stop while reading tobins spirit guide and you're just left with radio silence while looking at the spooky stuff that was in there. Now looking back at it its not nearly as bad as it was for me while i was a kid but can definitely see why i was scared of it though the art in that book was pretty cool. There is a video on youtube that goes over the extras of the game with the full spirit guide on there if you're looking to include this in a video.

It's one of those games that as you progress and go back to already beaten levels it feels liminal and empty, but as a kid, imagination goes wild and it feels truly eerie, as if you're not welcome anymore despite saving that place. This became worse when I was fooling around in the game and I grabbed an explosive barrel and it seemed as if the model swapped and grew legs and attacked my Fox character; this happened a second time with a friend as a witness. My brother didn't believe me and it never happened again. I never heard anyone having something like this happen again, but it happened. It's possible that the barrels noclipped and the models stretched around and as I tossed the barrel it exploded and harmed me and that's what happened.

Well, also, the gyroids in Animal Crossing are apparently based on some sort of creature or statue related to funerals and deaths in Japanese folklore, so having the player’s face become a Gyroid face on top of losing everything your villager had on them upon turning off the game in another player’s town without saving first would seem to indicate that something bad happened to them after essentially being abandoned in another town by the player.

I used to play Rayman 3 all the time on my PS2, I miss those days.. but yeah it took me some time to muster the courage to go through the Knarren levels

my suggestion would be ice level from pvz1, it was an unused level only accessible using a debug menu, nothing would happen until the game would just play the game over sound effect, idk why but i always found it unnerving

The sims 2 lore has a lot of fucked up details, too, especially in strangetown, where there's Olive Specter, a serial killer, and Nervous Subject (which is Olive's son) who is used as a human experiment and tortured by two evil scientists

I've been remembering stuff that scared me when I was a kid. I got 3 so far. All PS1. 1- A Rugrats game, it had a couple of levels with eerie ambient, I remember an empty space ship and the house at night, with a flashlight and some ghost PNGs. 2- The second boss from Gex 2, Moo Moo something. Oh and the Horror TV levels... and the Circuit ones... 3- A bully kid enemy from the park level in Jersey Devil. Can't say why they scared me so much, maybe the laugh. More stuff came to mind while writing. 4- The stained glass boss from Medievil 5- A space ship level from a Sega Genesis Toy Story game. My cousin had it and that level was so empty and eerie... I feel there's a theme here. 6- All of Contra Hard Corps if that counts.

The grim reaper entry reminds me a ton of the death enemy from Gauntlet Legends with the way he points while charging you. Dude would pop out of treasure chests randomly instead of loot and the only way to fend him off was the run or use the expensive magic potions.

Something else about the Pokemon Black/White bridge girl, in Black 2/White 2 there's an area called the "Strange House" where you learn more about her, and its implied that Darkrai, a Mythical Pokemon from the previous generation, killed this girl by forcing her into an endless sleep plagued with nightmares. Further evidence to it is when you obtain an item to encounter Cresselia, which is the pokemon who is designed lore-wise to counter Darkrai's nightmares. The Strange House also has some creepy music and every time you leave or re-enter rooms the furniture shuffles itself around, and you also see the ghost girl from the bridge around the house talking about endlessly sleeping and nightmares along with Darkrai iirc.

Distance is fun as hell, and by this point, I've gotten gold medals on almost all of the arcade maps! Reminds me of a modern Sonic game, in terms of gameplay and design.

That t-rex from the PS1 demo is also the final boss for the PS5's Astro's Playroom! That honestly creeped me out a bit even as an adult. Throughout the game there's an underground area with a large, grey cube. Once you beat all the prior levels, the cube blasts open to reveal a level called 1994 Throwback. There's no indication of the rex until you ascend a long staircase and platforming area, then once you reach this one flat platform he comes from the abyss much like the demo. It's quite creepy for a throwback Playstation platformer game!
@DaxMarko2 ай бұрын
I've tried out the PS1 Demo Disc as a kid, but the T-rex is not what really frightened me as much as one of demo games did. Its supposed to be this puzzle game where you control a dude from 3rd person view, on a platform of floating cubes, surrounded by classic PS1 pitch darkness. You have to destroy incoming cubes, which roll towards you like a row of boulders, so you don't get squashed. Altho what actually counts as game over is the cubes beneath your dude getting destroyed and seeing him yell as he falls infinitely into the void. There is absolutely zero music and most you hear is just thumping sounds of cubes marching towards you with occasional synth SFX. It all feels like a nightmare you could have and never be able to explain it to someone enough to make it make sense. Pretty sure it fueled couple of my nightmares where I'm just stuck in some kind of purgatory beyond my comprehension and all I got is little floor to stand on. Despite it having a rather unnerving vibe to it, the gameplay premise is kinda interesting. Speaking of PS1, the Medievil, one of my favorite games ever is also full of scary stuff despite seeming kid friendly. While yes, it has strong spooky-halloween theme, some moments are genuine horror. For me, the collapsing floor from the hilltop chapel level is what got to me the most. Mainly because there's literally nothing beneath it, like its just bottomless. At least lava or spike bottom would suffice enough to not make my brain panic as much. Brings me same fear from the demo game I described. Falling infinitely into the complete unknown and unyielding darkness, like you're being pulled into a black hole or something...

Here's one I've never seen anybody talk about - Dog's Life for the PS2. The basic plot is that you're a dog named Jake who's trying to save his crush, another dog named Daisy, from kidnappers. You travel through a few different towns, completing quests to get bones so you can go to the next town. The game maintains a pretty child-friendly atmosphere, until you reach the last level - the dog pound. The dog pound is bleak and dead looking. Dogs you've met over the game are stuck in these tiny cages, and you have to free them while also running away from the dog catcher and his doberman. There's no upbeat music playing here, just ominous ambience with an owl hooting in the background. It gets even worse when you get to the building Daisy is being kept in. This place is called "The Big Machine." There's a bunch of bloody machines full of blades, crushers, grinders, etc., meant to turn dogs into cat food. You have to turn these off before Daisy is taken to them. If you fail, Jake will say that he "can't watch this" as it cuts to some cans of freshly made cat food coming off the conveyor. If you succeed, you'll free Daisy and encounter Ms. Peaches herself, who will actually swear at them. Jake will fart to make her back up into The Big Machine which will turn her into cat food instead as the machine narrates the entire thing. The game is sprinkled with some more adult-oriented jokes and dialogue, and the game does outright say what you're going to run into in cutscenes with Ms. Peaches talking to her workers, so it's not 100% out of nowhere to the player, but it's still a pretty disturbing and scary part of what's otherwise a pretty family-friendly game. I grew up playing this game and it sucks that I never see anyone talking about it. It's an old, obscure game though, so it makes sense.

On the Ps2 there was a licensed Madagascar game. It was mostly pretty kid friendly, but in one of the last levels there was a section where you had to 'parkour' on elevated platforms and bring the small lemur Mort to safety because Alex the lion wants to eat him. He says throughout the sequence that 'he just wants to play' and jumpscares you twice i think. Not the creepiest thing but the whole level was already very eerie and child me was a little spooked by him looking and acting so deranged.
