What a sad sad day that he was murdered…JFK was a man of vision and personable and related to so much of what America needed! Such a very sad day that he was taken away from us as we have missed so much, but he left something so memorable that he will never be forgotten! His spirit is still with us and that will always be used! He was a man of greatness and that will never leave us!

Legacy yes, but there are other factors I think. 1. LBJ pushed through the Civil rights legislation as he knew how to, BUT with the massive 'help' of a grief stricken nation. Had that not happened, I doubt he would have been able to pass very much through a conservative congress. The South went Republican over Civil Rights and are in effect still punishing the nation and Democrats for enacting desegregation and other such measures. I think LBJ had been an effective legislator, but the presidency was too big for him. To suggest that LBJ was a better politician than JFK is just stupid. 2. Nixon had always been paranoid and scheming, but instead comparisons you mention of how effective he was at slowing the cold war are groundless. JFK had to deal with a bellicose Khruschev not a sonambulent Brezhnev. Nixon said, the time, said he would have invaded Cuba. Now, JFK almost did, but he didn't. In 1994, when records were released, we found that the Soviets in Cuba had tactical nuclear weapons. If the Marines had invaded, they would have been turned to glass. Nixon had no personality and no connection with the people and then embarrassed the presidency. Every president (almost) does a few good things, but in sum, some negative deeds or oversights can and should counter everything. The demise of both LBJ and RMN was of their own myopia/paranoia. 3. Ford may have been a nice guy but I don't think he was the sharpest knife in the drawer. From a number of accounts, the Warren Commission (WC) boiled down to Allen Dulles a master spy earlier fired by JFK, Allan Specter, one of the counsels and good 'ol Jerry Ford. Your account was correct in that the conclusion was preordained. However, given the open car and trivial protection practically anyone could have killed JFK. The burning question, still not resolved is who did the cover up and why. If he was killed by a nut, then no botched autopsy etc would've been required. They could not let honest doctors do the autopsy in Dallas for his wounds would be on the inguinal record. No, they had to get the body to Bethesda Naval hospital where the could control things. Ford, was either totally fooled (doubtful) or he believed in the conspiracy and as such could never admit it. In the end terrible people took away a wonderful President for fear, really, of all those he wanted to help. They are still around in great numbers even today as they were given license by #45. I think America has been used for too long by opportunists who say and do whatever they have to to stay in power. This is not in the national interest. It needs to stop, by voters taking a far closer look at the real governing work these folks do and how close their rhetoric aligns with their actual work and then turf out the idiots. The voter is the final arbiter here. I think material future of the US at stake.

I remember the time. I was 8 years old. How could an 8 year old in Texas remember the talk of assassination prior to the visit but all of the so called adults engage in massive denial and seemingly without question accept the bs the news media handed us about a lone assassin. I had a mother who told me of the kind of a man LBJ was and had been. It was a lesson I learned at a young age. LBJ know how to get things passed but not until after JFK was in the ground. Transparent as hell. No wonder our generation grew up disgusted with our government.

@wiltchamberlainisthegoat13

The plans to take out Castro originated with the CIA under Eisenhower. Kennedy may have gone along with it, feeling that having a Communist in charge of a country just 90 miles from our shores was a direct threat to US national security particularly in the middle of the Cold War. The US President’s job is to protect the American people from all threats both foreign and domestic. Having said that, I believe Kennedy, like Eisenhower, saw the CIA as a domestic threat to our national security. That’s why Kennedy had famously threatened to splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces after the Bay of Pigs fiasco which Kennedy only reluctantly, as a new president, went along with. The CIA at that time had been almost acting as a rogue shadow government conducting its own foreign policy objectives which included assassinating some foreign leaders.
