Ngl I think you had a good chance of coming out that one alive, this wolf pack didn’t seem very coordinated and with a more aggressive defensive style I think they’d have been killed. But I get that running would be the more realistic behavior for an elk so I respect the dedication as well as how you didn’t want help.

If we did be more aggressive defensive style, like you said the wolf pack would have a higher chance of risking themselves rather then taking the elk down. It is best to be waiting for opportunities rather then going all in and act aggressive to the elk and spam biting it then you just suddenly hit the ground dead, and tbh the ELKS really didn't have a good chance of getting away since it was tired and it didn't have a enough stamina to get away.

So sorry for replying after 2 whole years, but yes, genetic mutations are possible in real life. There have been numerous cases of wolves and other animals with melanism, albinism, achromia and piebald.
