I love the way this looks in the end. All the different colors work really well together to sell the illusion of real grass.

I personally don't recommend this though, lots of work. And lots of paint. I think an air brush would help but like an industrial sized one or something. Idon't know but this was a pain!

@@TerrainMadeEasy You can also use a rattle can to get the base color down and then comb it through.

@@Meyoni I personally found rattle cans to be a little more sticky and clumpy, if that makes sense.

Actually what you need to to have is a comb too. All the "fur" needs to be combed to a uniform direction to cut with the electric shears. Use the No.2 guard first which is the longest one, then the No. 1 which is the shorter guard, and then no guard. Combing first is the key though, as the fur is not uniform in its lay across the mat. You can also use a comb to blend in the paint colors. Using the shears is faster, IF, you get the mat laying in the same direction.

I did use a comb, I don't know if I mention it on camera. My main issue was simply the size and running out of energy (and paint). I think I would buy this type of mat from now on!

Thanks for the tutorial. I've been wanting to figure out how to do a textured grass mat that can be rolled up without getting flock everywhere, and this looks like it might work well.

Yeah, I'm rolling this mat and it seems to be more than fine. It's a bit of work but I do love the look!

OMG - Thanks for the demo, there is no way that I have the patience for this endeavour.

I think if you take the scissors to it first to get most of it, you could make it quicker!

There are special dyes for faux fur that would work really well

@@TerrainMadeEasy Around where I live there are a lot of people that wear synthetic hair, and there’s a lot of hair dyes that dye synthetic hair and also work for faux fur. Most people that die photo for do it for cosplay reasons, and they suggest to get a few shades darker than what you want it to turn out because it doesn’t stick to the Furrer as well but it does stick.

Three hours isn’t all that long in hobby years. But it doesn’t look like much fun. I’m excited to know that you are thinking about terrain for Marvel Crisis Protocol. I’d love to find a nice method for making brownstone townhouses or skyscrapers for a table.

Yeah it's just a boring, reasonably intensive task. I hated it lol But I think terrain for that game is perhaps going to be a bit tricky. I think the only one from the demos that needed a proper board style is the subway station but lots of little details also. Could be difficult but fun

Terrain Oddity supposedly they are releasing 3x3 game mats. Hopefully those are good.

Watered down Fabric paint in a bucket and dump the whole thing in that might have worked better (though I have zero experience in anything like this) with some air brush afterwards. Or that is the first thought that comes to mind for me anyway.

I considered it! Like dye it basically but I didn't want to try it, thought it would be messy!

Oh man. Thanks for the warning. I'll never try this now. I'd rather now lawns all summer than shave that rug. I like cheap, but it has to be easy as well.

Terrain Oddity, maybe... Overall this just looks like way too much work for me. I watched the video.... But what is not clear is why you actually wanted this, and was it actually a success for you personally? Is it worth it? Is something commercially available like this?

@@3D-VENTING Good questions to be fair, I think I was perhaps tired from making it! I wanted to do this cause they look nice when done, and wanted a small mat for Marvel Crisis protocol. Was it worth it? Too early to say! There is a place in the US who does fantastic version, I bloody can't remember the name though, sorry!
