Another way to 'stay safe' is to use something they also use in films; compressed air. (In films, they can fill an oil can with debris, and 'fire' it out a fake balsa window to simulate an explosion) So you could use a sufficient tank of stored air, and 'fire' it at the loose bricks in the model. (Some people may also be old enough to remember the super exploding models in the 60's puppet version of "Thunderbirds")

Really cool! An advice: the camera is filming at least 1 or 1.5 kilometers away from the explosion and because of the sound speed traveling at 344 m/s the blast should be heard with 2 seconds of delay ;)
