I just picked up one of these (in the Allied version) yesterday and found your video tonight while I was collecting more information before I do any diagnostics and repairs on it, mine appears to have the same symptoms, but I haven't opened it up yet to check it out. Great video!

These are great radios, very nice!

One of the pair of capacitors near that same resistor had blown off one of it's bottom connectors on mine, It now works. I am now replacing the rest of the caps to remove a very slight AC hum.

Excellent video and trouble shooting Radionut63! I recently picked up an Allied SX-190 that had low sensitivity and found a bad n-channel FET in the RF amp circuit. Also a dirty band switch which I cleaned. I find this to be quite an excellent receiver for both SWL and Ham radio use. I believe these radios were made by JRC in Japan.

These sure are great receivers, at the time they were pretty hard to beat, and today for the most part they still are hard to beat. When they are working correctly, they work awesome!

Radionut63: I totally agree!

@@Radionut63 hi , what are the 2 components attached to the aluminum heat shield between the power supply and the af board ? Is the a equivelant part for these ? Sorry to bother you but i cant seem to get logged into the eham.net forum where there is good discussion on this AX-190. Thanks , Craig VE3SDB

Hi TheRudyDog, did your radio have low receive audio as well? Mine has low sensitivity and low volume. If so what was the part number? Thanks, Adam

for AM distortion check voltage on Q23,24,25,26. for distorted ssb check voltage on Q17. Could be faulty Q17. Faulty D8,9,10,or 10 thats right out of the service manual DE VE3TYA

My ax-190 has no audio . i use headphones to just hear a slight hiss from the radio at full volumn . The receiver is in mint shape , lights come on , but no audio . Any thoughts ? Radio has not been tampered with .

Sounds like the same problem this radio had... Change out the electrolytic capacitors might sort out the problem provided they did not cause another problem and pop the audio amplifier circuit. Also check the headphone and external speaker jacks, they might need to be cleaned. ;-)

@@Radionut63 Thankyou . I changed the same resistor on the power supply board . Im not a technician in anyway but its not hard to change out the caps and I bought several 400mW zener diodes to replace the 1S188s . But they seem fine . I hooked a length of wire to the S0239 and could tune in cw and a operator transmitting on 80 meters I believe it was BUT theres still something holding the signal back . S meter barely moves too . This is my 1st AX and Ive had 2 SX 190s . This one clearly is not pulling in like it should . www.eham.net/ehamforum/smf/index.php?action=printpage;topic=94087.0

What voltage is Zener D14 supposed to be?
@Radionut632 жыл бұрын
Service manual would answer that question. :-)

@@Radionut63 Oh well, you gave it "the old college try" as they used to say. You got pretty far, though!
