Honestly for an all around group, Vixx is my #1. After 6 years of listening to and watching KPop, there really are no other groups like Vixx... They do concepts and music SO incredibly well. I so wish they weren't as underrated and completely missed by the foreign fans. Stan talent - STAN VIXX !!

Technically, 桃源境 is Korean - Korean used to be written using Chinese characters, which are called Hanja in Korean, before a Korean king invented Hangeul over 550 years ago - like how Japanese still uses Kanji (Chinese characters). Hangeul is purely phonetic, so it just tells you how to pronounce something, in this case 도원경 is how 桃源境 is pronounced in Korean. Hangeul is an alphabet, so you get different words sometimes written and pronounced the same way, but which have different meanings, whereas in Hanja, each character actually has its own meaning - Chinese has no alphabet. Also, I'm guessing that the zither-like string instrument you were talking about would be a gayageum, which is a Korean traditional instrument which is related to the Chinese guzheng. Other songs this song might you remind you of, due to their future bass elements, are NU'EST's Love Paint, and 2PM's Promise (I'll Be).

you don't know how excited i was seeing your reaction video up!! alright, here's the real gist of it (well, the gist i got out of it) 桃源境/shangri-la/“eden” (the translation fans had when the concept photo first came out), is basically a paradise/happy place where people there living their life without the turmoil of the society/the world outside, a land of peace. The idea I believe comes from a Chinese classical prose name 桃花源記 (direct translation: peach blossom paradise). The story tells a man who accidentally finds this 桃源境/shangri-la/“eden” , people there are surprised to see a stranger since they've been on their own for decades (maybe even longer), the man enjoys his time there, wanting to tell the world outside about this amazing place despite asked not to. He leaves, cannot wait to tell the emperor (or whoever is in charge), but he cannot find the way back later. and judging from the lyrics (that I understand), they are talking about being with a girl, indulging in her scent (yes, scent of peach blossom), her presence, not wanting to leave. I think that's the exact opposite of the story I just told above. You can't have both/all. You can only choose one and commit to it. P.S. NAVI moment yo, and the fact that N + Hyuk taking over the last chorus!!!! (of course with a little help from Leo and Ken) Hope this helps :D

I was wondering what 桃源境 meant. I am Chinese but raised mostly in the states so i don't really understand Chinese classical prose/idioms/history etc. Thanks for explaining! Also great reaction Josh! Interesting seeing a prerecorded one after watching so many livestreams. haha.

he's a liar. shangri-la means "paradis on earth".and the title of the MV is also write in chinese beacuse it is based on a chinese ancient poetry called (桃源境).and the introduction of song is played by chinese tradional musical instrument called "guzheng"(古筝).it's not korean invention.so the whole MV is definitely influenced by chinese culture, because i'm chinese.and i know the history of it.
@hihithehippo7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure which part you think Josh (he?) is lying, but the instrument could be 가야금/伽倻琴/Gayageum, classified as a Korean instrument, but you are right that it originated from 蒙古箏/Yatga or guzheng/古筝. As for the cutlrue part, I'm gonna say it's a mix or just go general with it, Eastern style/vibe 東洋風. I just LOVE how the east and west collide so wonderfully through the music and the mv!!!

PS: that "apple" is probably a peach, cuz the title contains the word "peach"/桃 lol

The reason there are Chinese characters is because the concept is inspired by an old Chinese fable called "The Peach Blossom Spring." That's what the literal translation of the Korean title is. The fable is about a kind of hidden paradise where humans and nature live together in harmony. I think that's why they show Hyuk and the deer and also the 2 worlds colliding, because nature and humanity are coming together.
@callmecrazy52867 жыл бұрын
thank you so much because I figured it had something to do with Chinese legends but because I grew up on Greek mythology that's what I kept seeing (like with the golden apple - Prince Paris and the three goddesses, anyone?) but I knew they were going for a more traditional Chinese theme and I really wanted to know what it was!!!!

If you search it up, Shangri La is, according to the Chinese folktale The Peach Blossom Spring (yes peach, not apple) a place of eternal paradise, which explains all the aesthetics which give it a paradise vibe. And they are also doing a birth flower, birthstone concept. Each member is dressed in the colors which correspond to their respective birth stones. And their background settings are influenced by their respective birth flowers for their individual shots.

@prinnie027 жыл бұрын
Welcome back! As always, Vixx MVs are open to interpretation but as I understand it, Shangri-La is actually a concept from Asian folklore. It’s a mystical, exotic utopia isolated from the outside world. As a “lost paradise,” some say that it’s a real place that can no longer be accessed or found, or that it's located in another world or that it is actually a place of the imagination/state of tranquil consciousness to be attained through inner exploration. You can see such imagery and symbolism expressed in the MV (e.g. the cut out windows, the two worlds separate and then eclipsed, etc.). The lyrics also reflect aspects of this when applied to love as a state of utopia that they're trying to reach, and the MV gives off a similar yearning, dream-like quality. I'm also glad you pointed out the use of color in your reaction! Shangri-La is said to be a paradise of nature and vibrant beauty, so the aesthetics and colors used here actually tie in with each member’s birthstones/birth flowers. Hope this helps!

I think this is something that people should know. *The introduction of the song is not a 'Chinese sensation', It's a ''Korean tradition Sound'', The traditional Korean musical instrument used for the introduction of the song is Gayageum(가야금) Also, fan is a fan of traditional Korean dance. The music video doesn't have any 'Chinese influence', so it reflects the ''traditional Korean tradition''*

hello Josh! thank you for reacting to this so quickly, I'm glad you liked the song and the MV. ok so what I know is that "Shangri-La" is a Chinese word that refers to a sort of oriental paradise, a permanently happy place, isolated from the outside world, a sort of utopia. Like, the people who live at Shangri-La are almost immortal, and stuff. I guess VIXX was inspired by this story and they used it to make this epic "traditional" oriental song. They went 100% with the concept by wearing sort of traditional clothing and I don't think you've noticed but this song contains 0 words in English! 😊

Hello, I wanted to help explain the concept of the video a bit. The name of the song is Shangri-La" (도원경/桃源境; Do Won Kyung), the album name`s Shangri- La. The mv concept is based on a mix of Asian concepts, like the fan, the peach (not an apple), the lyrics and more. The Choreo is from Keone the same of who did the choreo of Fantasy. The concept idea is from Hongbing. VIXX was on Heroes of Remix (a chinese program) last year and they made a choreo with fans, so maybe they get the inspiration from that. And they are using a Korean instrument Gayageum(가야금) . I love your reaction!

it was translated Shangri-la but it's chinese letters based korean meaning it's more correct. Readed Do Wong Gyung, it means Do: peach/Won: origin/Gyung: earth's edge; wich means a utopia at the earth's border where beautiful peach blossoms bloom, it's kind of a heaven or paradise in traditional east asian cultures, and according to classical stories/mythologies the peaches of this blossomed trees are the elixir for eternal life. To add some more, they used a traditional string instrument called KAYAGUM to give the song a traditional vibe and their clothing is a modernly re-designed hanbok

I feel so weird watching a reaction that is not live now. I've just gotten so used to the live reactions. Don't ask me about Vixx MVs I never know what is happening I just enjoy. N's vocals were beautiful in this I guess he knew that Ken was trying to dethrone him as "my bias." bias is in quotes because we all know that there isn't really a thing known as a Vixx bias. N's little dance performance trailer thing that was released earlier that was gorgeous and how some of it was in the MV I have been blessed. Can we talk about Hyuk though like what happened did you all see him snatch some lines. Leo obviously killed it as always. Ravi he's Ravi people what do you expect nothing, but epicness comes from him. Hongbin like the visual is attacking me and it's a very tough situation for me right now. I going to stop typing now cause I could go on for hours.

I love your video! yes you have great eyes and insight! The apple thing is actually not an apple but a peach. In Asian literature, peach and peach blossom are related with lost place (Utopia) which is the title, Shangrila. (Speaking shortly, there is a story that one man got lost his way and found a stream with fallen peach blossom. He went into the cave following the stream and found Utopia, lost place.) Vixx used lots of symbols and visual images in their MV. Isn't it interesting?
@youi30327 жыл бұрын
Lol😂that's not apple it is peach. Peach+fan+..silk Han-bock?(Korean traditional clothes;this time, Vixx's clothes are based on Han bock)=young nobles have taste for the arts(?)? Paradise? in Korea, maybe in Chinese. Vixx's new concept is Korean traditional. (So it's right that you heard Ga-ya-guem sounds). And that "chinese letter" is similar to chinese letter, but little bit different. Korea use old chinese letter...? I dont know how to explain this 😭 Korea and Japan were influenced by ancient China. So we also use "Chinese letter" (ex. 學 in Korea, 学in China and Japan. And it's same means) I always watching your reaction:) your rection videos are always good :)

Shangri- la is described as a paradisiacal place located in the mountains of the Himalayas, the headquarters of panoramas and wonderful where time seems to stop in an environment of happiness and health, with the harmonious coexistence between people of diverse backgrounds. Shangri-la will be felt by the visitor or as the promise of a new world possible. So, we have the Earth and th em, Shangri - la. They coexist but do not interfere or interact with each other, and may be described as another dimension. From what I understand, in the song they feel as passionate about reaching Shangri-la (or paradise) to get to know the beloved person/ Fall in love with. APPLE Explanation ~ my theory ~ the apple would be his expulsion from the paradise (Shangri-la) for not wanting to be there without the loved one, or Shangri-la will no longer be a paradise for not having the beloved with him.. Then he would eat the apple to be expelled from there and stay in "our EARTH". It is basically the novel of the same name. 😚😚
