As an Army I'm proud that you're learning their names... The cleaning part is a commen thing in Korea. students clean their own classrooms, but cleaning toilets are concidered either a duty, or sometimes a punishement.... The pushing part is called "Kabedon," and is very popular in Japan. It may look violent, but if the girl tried to push them or actually tell them to stop, guys would let them go. Most guys use Kabedon when the girls are begin shy or are playing hard to get, which also is quite comon.... you know, cultural diffrences.... But the guys usually don't do it hard :)

still, kabedon doesn't usually involve actually pushing or shoving the girl, just slamming your hand on the wall. even so, people rarely do kabedon seriously in real life. the director probably included those scenes to make them look "tough" anyway. kinda misguided imo

@Ismaring007 8 жыл бұрын
MsNinjani yeah, in real life most people don’t use it in real life, but many directors in asia use it to portray a manly man, which is the name of this song. I don’t like that image, but i understand why they would use that to paint a picture of manly man.

i know that you hated the "violence" in this and believe me I was put off at first but I hope it just doesn't make you hate them or think they're actually like that bc i saw the behind the scenes and both suga and jin kept on apologising to the girl and i it makes me think that the whole "aggressive" guy is what the director wanted since the title of the song in hangul is technically "Strong/tough guy" though I wish they didn't have to resort to this sigh.. honestly they're nice and genuine kids. i just hope this doesn't change your mind about them ^^

***** yeah same here! and seeing the behind the scenes you can tell suga and jin feel so bad when they did it.. and when they finished the scene jin was like "OH MY GOD IM SO SORRY" and he kept on bowing and apologizing and asking the girl if she's okay(she was like really im okay im okay it doesn't hurt) and it made me realise that they're really kind kids and wouldn't hurt a fly probably lmao

in the behind the scenes video for this mv, you see him apologizing right after he pushes her and she tells him it's fine. I think it's something the director wanted rather than what they were personally comfortable with.

Lmao I love that you thought the way they were acting was kinda wrong, it's funny if you watch the making of this MV, Jin apologized to the girl immediately after filming his part. The concept of the music video was to show off their manliness but I agree that the way they did it in the music video was really off. And it's already been said but BTS is a seriously great group of guys who probably wouldn't really act like this if it wasn't acting.

LOL Jimin was cleaning because mostly in Asian schools the "janitor" are the students assigned for the job such as: cleaning up the homeroom, and the bathrooms. Its not really meant as a punishment, its just how they do things

Actually they were all acting...it's not real life.. And even when they write some of their own songs, they don't have the freedom to direct their own music video. Mind you, this was back when BTS was struggling and getting very little media attention. Making a music video may have been a PR scheme as well to help them get a little bit more attention. Back then, they were trying to find their sound and uphold their original concept- to be a purely hiphop idol boy group that made Korean hiphop music inspired by legendary hiphop artists like Coolio and J.Cole. The company kept trying to make them look like badboys to suit the hiphop image, and I guess they just thought that acting like this would showcase a more American hiphop style. They've changed a lot though. Recently, the boys said that if they could rewind time knowing what they'd have to do to gain the success they have today, they would have taken another path. Even in the making of this music video, Suga and Jin were reluctant to act that way towards the actress. It IS however, just acting. No one was harmed in the making of this video.

+Jasmine Kira Knight uhh that about taking another path meant that they would never want to go through that (training, dieting, debuting, struggling for popularity) again. it was so tiring and so difficult for them that the idol path wouldnt be a path they would choose again. its not about taking another path musically speaking. honestly i think theyre not too ashamed of their earlier stuff (save for a few songs maybe) and they shouldnt be because it was always good. and boy in luv, as cringy as it may be for us, kinda fit into a certain kind of fantasy of a deliquent bad boy (i mean lbr.. it exists) and it REALLY made them much more popular and recognizable (they did get their first music show nomination for this song after all), 2 years later people still remember them very well for the school uniform concept. so even if we hate it, it helped them a lot in the end (which is why i could never fully hate it.. and anyway it was my fav era for them and i still love SLA album sooo much)

BTS didn't have much of a say in this concept and the direction of the MV was decided entirely by the director. Jin absolutely loathed this and kept apologizing to her, on the brink of tears. They didn't decide that. They didn't want to do that. And it did receive backlash, both in Korea and internationally. Nobody said it was okay. This director just went crazy and the company let it happen. It's on them. BTS was seriously struggling at the time and the company was trying to sell that they were "bad boys." BTS had no say in how the MV went or this song, actually. Rap Monster and Suga wrote their own lines, but what they wrote had to fit in the concept. That is literally all the involvement they had. The fact that you would be so close-minded to blame BTS themselves and not want to hear exactly what happened is purely ignorant and disrespectful on your part. I hope you are actually open to reading the explanations people have provided instead of acting the way you are in the video.

I love that you don't remember your initial response to this video. You didn't like the gender relations then and you were put off by BTS for a long time until they grew on you. I'm glad that you guys spoke up about this though, because it is a problem. I think the director wanted the scenario to seem aggressive so that when the boys actually had good intentions, it was a surprise, but they went way too far with it. A twist like that isn't worth the message it's sending, and I don't know how much of it is a cultural difference and how much of it was a bad artistic decision. It's too bad bc I love the song and MV other than that.
@d0s0a0f
@d0s0a0f 8 жыл бұрын
+Alexa Planje I think there is somewhat of a cultural difference. I can't count how many times I have seen scenarios where the male lead has dragged the female lead by her wrist in k-dramas, and it's almost always romanticized. So it seems to be a normalized thing, not sure how common but at least enough to be represented continuously in their media.

+d0s0a0f thanks for the context. I mean, even in the US people wouldn't blink an eye. Many reactors to this video say nothing about so I'm not surprised that it got shot. Whoever did the shoving obv knew it was wrong or he wouldn't have been so uncomfortable with it but I don't think they've been taught how to deal with these situations, esp under so much pressure. It's too bad that no one ever spoke up against it though, like Josh originally said. There are problematic messages in many pop/rock/hip hop songs and even our bias group isn't perfect on that level. There are young girls who even say they have no problem with it and think it's hot, which is sad bc it isn't in this context. I have problems with Rap Mon's "Trouble" too, as much as I kind of love that sketch song.

I'm glad they talked about the message and the gender relations bc this was the second Bts mv i ever saw(the first was Dope so thats why I wanted to know more about them) and it put me off so much i didn't get into them until Run. The lyrics in Danger were quite aggressive too, and i really disliked War of Hormone. Im glad they went in a different direction since I need u! It shows a lot of growth so I hope they dont repeat the situation in this Mv in the future

It's nice seeing these kinds of comments because at least people are open-minded to recognize that the content of the video is problematic. Even in the MV itself, not many people open these discussions and what's even more sad is that girls think getting shoved, dragged, etc is hot. As someone who has experienced sexual harassment first hand, I'm telling you, THIS is how it could look and it is far from hot. This is also my 2nd BTS video and it put me off for a long time. I just hope that as a quite progressive group, speaking against societal standards and all, they also realize the problems in these kinds of video. They are after all just actors in MVs and do not directly control the reins. Sorry for the long comments. Haha. Some feels I've kept for quite a long time~

The title of the mv is called manly man in korea. I think the reason why there is violence in the mv is because they are "manly man" and they dont fall in love(hence the "why are you shaking up my heart"). Since they have never actually liked a girl before, they don't know how to treat girls or confess to them("how did dad ask mom out"). If you notice, they look/are bad boys. They are probably treating the girl the way they are treating everything else in life. BTS are bad boys in this mv(bad boys aren't generally seen in a good light anyways. so comment on it as you please)

And yes there is no reason for a guy to EVER put his hands on a girl, but even w/ that in mind, the point of the MV is they all play "bad boys" that couldn't care less about what any1 says about them but are 1 day blinded by a new girl's beauty and fall in love @ 1st sight, but they keep the "bad guy" exterior until they're completely alone and they turn into hopeless romantics and big softies LOL

if you listen to school luv affair and dark and wild album in proper order, you will understand this thing. lol. school luv affair (boy in luv and just one day are in this album) is mostly about immature and unstable adolecent or even younger boys "falling love into" a girl. as you read in english subtitles, they even don't know how to say "I love you" to a girl! Immature boys don't know proper way to propose a girl, and treat her in a boy-like , somewhat violent way. Later in" just one day", they found out how to ask a girl to date out. That way, the boy became a boyfriend of the girl. later in "danger", the boy found out that he is the one who loves her, but the girl didn't seem so. She doesnt say much things, or say she loves him, or chat with him. He is frustrated and sings "danger" . this way two albums are connected ti each other. I hope my bad english didn't bother you much. I like your BTS reactions very much.

Their company got a lot of backlash when this first came out, I think the idea they were trying to convey of 'angrily in love' is better represented in their other mvs. BTS wasnt really comfortable with the script either and apologized profusely when they acted out the scenes but thats how the director wanted it -_- sketchy MV aside, the song is dope and and the choreography is sick af

+Alexa Planje as far as I know, yes. I remember when the MV came out and a lot of fans were torn between supporting bts or attacking them for the message the MV was delivering primarily to young girls :( They wouldn't be the first group to get some backlash bc of a MV though, it's become disturbingly common.

+Nezumi Shion (NezuShi) Well I'm proud of people for actually speaking out against it then at least, esp if that includes actual ARMY. You'd think there'd be less of a problem with this kind of thing over time (as I think there has been in the US) but it sounds like that might not be the case. I know kpop vids are getting more sexual but it'd be sad if they're getting more brazen with this kind of thing too.

+Nezumi Shion (NezuShi) tbh they got that backlash mostly from the western side??? in korea this concept, the mv, the song actually made them A LOT more popular. it plays well with the fantasy of a deliquent boy who doesnt rly know how to deal with his feelings or w/e and it includes some of the most cliche kdrama moves like The Wrist Grab. like, this is really something you see often in entertainment over there (idk about real life since i dont live there but)

Aga Z Interesting. They haven't had any issues like this lately and seem to be lightening up on the bad boy concept. We'll see. Gender politics seem to be really different over there and I can't blame them for not being educated about it, at least to an extent.

Those kind of scenes seem to be weirdly common in Korean dramas, so it's not like it's just BTS, but at the same time it really shouldn't be a thing at all... (Also, I don't think BTS have much or any creative control when it comes to the videos, so whether it's good or bad is entirely down to the people who make it...) Either way, I'm glad you still mentioned it; a lot of reactors will just ignore it because they're afraid to say anything that has even the remotest possibility of offending the fans ^^
@ness_rinn

i think everyone even ARMYs were uncomfortable with those scenes but also we gotta understand that this was all what the director wanted.. Cuz in the Behind the Scenes you could see Jin really earnestly (almost in tears) repeatedly apologizing to the girl and hoping he don't have to that again. But really though even when i watch kdramas (which i love) im not a fan of those wrist grabs and really want to see those parts reversed at least once and the girl does that wrist grab to a guy... but i guess that is just a big thing there and they like it so idk...

I completely agree with you guys. Even though BTS is my favorite group, and I adore them so much, I never liked this video because of the way the girl was treated in it. I do think that BTS really didn't have much say on how they were supposed to act towards her, and it was mostly the director who put it all together, but that still doesn't excuse the behavior towards the girl. I really liked that you guys picked up on this, and actually called it out because I've watched a good amount of reactions to this, and only a few ever said anything about this, so thank you! :D Anyways, I love your guys' reactions, and I'm always ready for the next update!!! I remember hearing them in an interview saying they were in fact going for that 'bad boy' thing and they liked this girl but didn't know how to act with her hence the shoving up against the locker and aggressive wrist grabbing. A lot of asian dramas actually have this aspect where the guy is originally mean to a girl and she hates it but eventually through the course of different events she comes to see he was a softer/more sensitive side. But your message at the end is very good.

They did it for a reality show in L.A. & while it's totally different from what they normally do & not very good because the guys were awkward & way too shy with the girls (especially Jungkook), it really is interesting to see them attempt an american style video.

If you are wondering why Jimin was mopping the toilet floor, it is something common happening in an asian school like in Korean and Japan. Basically, each class has a duty roster where every week, each student will have a duty to keep their classroom and school clean. For example, toilet duties, cleaning the class' windows, distributing morning milk ect.

I'm glad you reacted to this video, and I'm glad you pointed out the issues in the video. The treatment of the girl is problematic, and I was disappointed by it. It's clear from the behind the scenes that BTS didn't really want to be so rough - Suga and Jin apologized a lot to the actress, but like you said, it doesn't make it okay. It seems the director wanted a "tough boy" but it definitely went too far with the stalking, pushing, and dragging in the name of "romance." I don't like the video concept at all. BTS themselves are actually very kind (and somewhat afraid of girls heh) so I am comforted by that, but I wish BTS had enough say in the video to not do this. I really hope they are aware it was wrong, and that they stay away from this image in the future. They have so far, and I am glad for that.

It's just an Asian portraying how manly guys are in MV's and Dramas. They DO NOT actually do that in real life. It's just a metaphor for them. As many has been already commenting about the "physical abuse" scene; I'll stop here. Josh; ever considered reacting to your old J.A.J. videos of ones you've already seen twice? XD I think it'll be worth it to see your own old reactions and have that conflict with your current mindset of KPOP lol.

Like other people have said, the violent+rude bits are stereotypical "bad boy" stuff. ..which some people find appealing (hopefully only when it's fictional / not real. think twilight with the stalker vampire boyfriend, things like that. and you can go on forever about twilight and feminism........) I watched BTS' later mvs first so when I went back to watch their older stuff it was just. wow am I glad they switched gears. (This sort of shit is one of the reasons it's so hard for me to get into kdramas :V ) Even in the U.S. there are ideas like "boys bully the girl they have a crush on" (thankfully it feels like more and more people are critiquing that sort of mindset but it's still not abnormal) I'm really glad you guys talked about it in the video, because it's kinda unsettling when people watch things like that and they don't even raise an eyebrow. Great reaction as always!

For starters, you guys are right that it was really REALLY wrong. Girls shouldn't ever be treated like that and being a girl myself, I would hate it so bad if someone does that to me. In Korea though, they have this concept of bad boys being very aggressive to the one they love bc they dont know how to express their feelings otherwise. Its widely used in other MVs, dramas and movies because they think its cool. Hence the korean name of the song, 상남자 (sangnamja) which means 'Manly Man'. But I do hope this kind of stereotype ends because its just not right and gives off a very bad message to the younger audience. I'm just so glad that Bangtan is finished with this phase already and are now mature with their music :) Thanks for checking them out and giving your honest opinion! You guys rock! :D

Winner marathon? They released new mvs and not only that , before releasing the new mvs they had other rappers/groups/singers/comedians in their company (yg) to do 15-30 seconds cover of the songs, but they had the choice of changing the beat of the song how ever they want but they had to keep the lyrics the same keeping all their fans on their toes trying to find out the beat of the songs which was kinda cool. People who did the covers: Epik high, Lee hi, Taeyang, Gdragon, AKMU, Zion . T, Dean etc

When u don't know how to separate real life from a music video and end up concluding that Koreans are actually like that. You make it seem like BTS are actually aggressive. How dumb. It's acting, it's a concept and they are suppose to be bad boys none of this even fazed me first time watching it as it went with the concept they were going for. No I am not an abuser either. Like no one is gonna explain to you that a treating women like that is wrong. Cuz it is. But like acting I've seen worse and they immediately apologise and asked if she was ok straight after and she was completely fine as she knew what they were going to do. I've seen worse in MVs tbh.

The way I see it, the story in the video was that Jung Kook had a crush on this new girl and his friends helped set him up with her. I think they were being mean to her so she wouldn't think they were flirting with her. Like, they intentionally annoyed her. Ultimately, they wanted her to like Jung Kook.

yeah, definitely an MV that doesn't bear watching. Even an eternal love for BTS doesn't excuse it. I was bracing myself for a repeat of your last reaction to the same MV. As others have said, it seems to be a fairly common way of displaying masculinity in the media of Korea and Asia more widely. Its the worm out trope of the rough gangster guy who secretly has a heart of gold and would never actually hurt you. Pretty used to seeing it in manga, anime and dramas (with romantic music and falling cherry blossoms to soften the image) but it's weird in kpop... Because even thought they're "acting", the BTS members are kind of role playing versions of themselves - which makes the violence a little too confronting.
@elizabethwillsea2846
@elizabethwillsea2846 8 жыл бұрын
The point of the violence in this video was to show how confused the boys were with how they felt about the girl. I've seen it happen a million times with my younger sister, where a boy gets a little overly aggressive with her (thankfully she gets just as aggressive back with her sarcasm). That's all that is meant to show. Is them trying to sort out their feelings.

First when I saw this mv, the violence thing got me too and then weirdly enough i turns kinda sweet when you look at it more attentively. It's kinda sweet they bring the girl to Kookie. Still it is wrong to treat a girl like that. It's not that weird the cleaning thing, in europe we have it too. We have janitors and cleaning ladies but as punishment we need to clean like bathrooms and such. But also just a couple of times of a school year, you are cleaning the classrooms too, without punishment. We even have to clear the "playground' sometimes. Even if it is after school hours.

i'm from taiwan but this thing about pushing girls against a wall or something is also popular in tw. it started from some k drama and we call it "壁咚" in chinese. its received as rather manly and romantic to do such a thing though. only that in this video the director wants to give them this "bad boy look" which they are absolutely not, which results in them being like really rude to that girl. but honestly for me as a person who is aware of this culture, I feel fine watching this vid and still I'd say that "壁咚“ is something at least most taiwan girls or k drama fans would want to experience xD I guess it's just that u guys don't know about whats trending in asia thats all

No, you guys are definitely right, it's not cool what's in this vid. It's a romance trope that's popular in kpop mvs and kdramas, the semi-abusive love interest. It's why I really couldn't get into kdramas like Boys Over Flowers, that kind of guy just isn't romantic or attractive. (Also, a conservative attitude implies a less progressive attitude toward women, so this isn't inconsistent with that necessarily). That being said, I cut the members a break. From behind the scenes stuff you can see they felt uncomfortable doing that (Jin apologized to her a lot). But I get people who don't want to cut them a break, I don't really like watching this video either. Basically, the dance version is better.

I consider that is more interesting that looking for a sound. Big Hit is a very interesting company. They play with the concep in a line of stage. All comeback is a new concept of the young live. Also, they play with your feeling that are different in each stage of your life. You prefer sad song or hard sound song or romatic song in your moments related with your feelings. The special thing is that BTS become each sound in their sound and in theri moments. Since the loss thought face to the society in no more dream, follow the need to go to their love without experience in boy in luv, after this the possibility and the swet love in just one day, the things are bad and they are in danger with a rock sound. And the last is the light and the darkness of leave the young or maybe still in there forever with last albums... You have to hear all the songs that doesn't have a MV. Sorry for my english.

The guy that pushed the girl against the locker (Jin) felt really bad after he did that but the girl was like no it'll good on screen (I watched the behind the scenes). Plus this is just an MV to show their bad boy image, like kdramas they just over exaggerate the scenes for aesthetic purposes. Although I felt the same way in terms of the way they treated her and they honestly didn't need those scenes but hey what's done is done.

Let me just tell this to you, almost all groups just use one actor or actress in the music video because those people are also paid. Since they are still not that popular(comparing to other groups like bigbang), they can't really afford it yet. Even with the group mamamoo. They were supposed to hire an actress for their mv uk oh ah yeh. But, since they spent too much money on the props for their transformation, they couldn't afford it anymore and decided on just making Solar the main girl.

Trust me they'd never do that real life. Jin apologized to the girl many times after & IRL at a signing a few weeks ago jin accidentally hit a girl with a picture (with a frame I think) of Jimin without looking bc he was making fun of him but when it hit her hands he literally freaked out and held her hands and apologized over and over while asking if she was okay & so did Jimin while the others hit him & scolded him for it. Look it up. They'd never do this in real life. I don't agree with what the director wanted them to do but the whole point was how the girl changes them from a douche to a nice guy. Watch them off stage and you'd see that they couldn't even hurt a fly tbh

To be honest I don't understand the issue some people have with the Boy in Luv MV. Like, it's a music video and the girl is an actor one would assume she consented to this and also if I'm watching a show and one character kills another I'm not like "damn that actor is such a horrible person" because they're an actor and they're just doing their job. If people still have a problem with it then just know the members apologized a lot, but either way it's a music video, and they are acting.

Everyone is talking about kdramas/ other asian dramas portraying the shoving and wrist grab. Has anyone ever seen American westerns? They did this stuff all the time. Heck, it doesn't even have to be a western. They did all kinds of rough grabbing and shaking of women they liked in other american movies and shows across the years. I'm not saying it's good for people to do that in real life, but it happens a lot in all kinds of media over many years. It's a fairly common theme. Like girl-> don't want to admit it -> act rough and bad boyish-> surprise! I'm a cinnamon roll for you. This is definitely NOT a korean/asian theme. Americans have been throwing this type of stuff around for ages
