This song was written during the Vietnam War era and imagines surviving a nuclear war apocalyptic time. I learned this, the entire CSN (+ later Y) band history and the origins of most of their song titles while sitting on “conveyor duty” at the Fresh Kills Landfill in Sept/Oct of 2001. Looking for body parts, bone fragments, teeth and virtually anything to assist in identifying missing victims after the 9/11 disaster at the WTC, I was really affected. I was a naive new investigator in my 20’s during the 1993 bombing and it did not truly affect me greatly to the limited loss of life. In 2001, I was then assigned to assist federal team of old-timers who brought along a “somber play list”. That was a bit before the iPod was released, so it consisted of a case of CD’s and mini player that they wired up to the “radio rebroadcast” input of one of the vehicle sirens. I guess they realized the sheer magnitude of everything was troubling to me and classic rock history time every day… until we let the vehicle battery die one day and lost the “privilege” of music. F+F really nails CSN on every song!

1969, stationed at Camp McCoy. We'd sneak into the photo lab, where we had a stereo set up, and listen to this album, Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones, Sly, Jimi, and King Crimson. This song caught the zeitgeist. Concerned, confused, stoned, idealistic, and still hopeful even though the Vietnam War, the '68 convention, Kent State, and more made it feel like the world gone mad. Six decades later, I hear this recreated lovingly and gloriously. And just like 60 years ago, we are all in deep water... and I'm still hopeful today. Hearing this puts me in a good space. Your taste, talent, and perfection are exquisite, and we are blessed by them.
