Good video Neil. As a building inspector I have also accepted an LD1 fire detection system to all habitable rooms in the dwelling, for situations like this where the property is above 3 storey and the ground floor is not open plan.
@RealLifeArchitecture Жыл бұрын
I have used LD1 in Scotland but now it’s a hard choice between suppression or protected enclosure and suppression is now mandatory in flats.
@BerkleyBuilds Жыл бұрын
@@RealLifeArchitecture I prefer the early warning approach detection offers occupants, opposed to relying on a protected stair to hold back a fire while people escape. It’s a fine balance and the decision is unique to each property and situation.

Always a good plan to have a chat with neighbors first, even if they bite your head off initially, better than an unexpected letter from the planning office which they are likely to misinterpret.

Artificial chimney? Does this mean removal of the existing chimney - unless replaced by a ‘non functional replica’ - would scuttle the application? If not, why not simply dispense with the chimney altogether?
@RealLifeArchitecture Жыл бұрын
As far as I can tell, the new ‘chimney’ is used to house the metal flue from a stove. I could be wrong. It does seem like a lot of work to hide something that could have just been painted black. I don’t think anyone would notice or mind.

I wanted a loft conversion, 7 objections, 250 yards down the road planning granted for 1000 houses granted, how was that fair? Planning officer recommended pass, parish council interfered just like your description, sent planning committee refused by a bunch of halfwits, it took me a year to go through planning portal inspectorate passed
@RealLifeArchitecture6 ай бұрын
The system can produce apparently ridiculous results like you described. Did you use a planning consultant for the inspectorate?

Thank you, I’m rethinking the channel at the moment. Removed a lot of old content, starting a different channel for Vlogs, no more new shorts on this channel either, algorithm gets confused

As B.S as your planning regs are, some other countries would love to have some of these protections. How about a video on planning regs as it relates to architecture in some other commonwealth nations?
@RealLifeArchitecture Жыл бұрын
I think the planning system is fine for altering homes and complex commercial / industrial developments. There is a good argument we should move to a zoning / pre-approved system for new housing, to remove uncertainty and increase housing supply. I worked in Australia as a student, the system in NSW was more straightforward than UK but our building regulations are more robust.

@@RealLifeArchitecture On the flip side, one of the reasons why Japan's house prices are so cheap (outside of Tokyo) is due to deregulation. There should however absolutely be minimum standards. The other reason why houses are cheap is the bigger reason imo, but these two reasons are both cited as to why their houses are cheap. The two main reasons given for houses declining in value, to near ¥0 in 30 years is deregulation and given their population is declining Imo the latter is probably a bigger reason but the first reason does play into it a bit too

I've got planning permission to allow my flat roof to have solar panels on it. Apparently that's such a rare thing to be approved. Anyway, before I did such a thing, I went door to door, and wrote a letter for those who weren't home, saying exactly what I want to do, and if you have any questions/objections, , here's my phone number too I included a photo of some random roof I found on Google, and said this is how I think it should look like. Nobody objected, so I got a local architect to help me with both the design AND planning application. Technically I could do the planning application bit myself but it's worth the £30 that he charged for that bit because the council went back to him, and said "Well can you do x and resubmit drawings" He said yes when I also said yes I did however email them and say "I'll be getting a structural engineer to look at it too to see if it needs reinforcing ." The planning went through with zero objections. I did also pay for the structural engineer to have a look at it too. I basically paid for them to say "Yup. It's fine. It doesn't need any additional reinforcement" which is in a way annoying but it's peace of mind. I was looking to get insulation up there too but that's a massive £10K and I've already paid about that much to extend my solar panel system AND change my solar provider from Growatt to GivEnergy instead. So I said to the person doing said insulation that I know it'll cost me more later on, but I've already paid for the solar panels, and it's probably better I get them on first even though realistically I'd want to get insulation on there first but I wasn't expecting the cost to be that high. I'll get another quote for said insulation and if it's a lot cheaper I'll tell the solar panel installer to hold off just four weeks or so. If it isn't that much cheaper, I'll say "Look ill have to wait then" It also means that I know how much to save up. The rationale for having insulation on top of my flat roof is because I'm looking to get my house super insulated using PassivHaus principles.

I prefer vintage turntables, like my 1971 Elac Miracord 50H. But your receiver looks suitably vintage and very nice.
@RealLifeArchitecture Жыл бұрын
Very keen eyes. The turntable is a heavily modified Rega Planar 3, using moving coil cartridge, so it runs through a Rega pre-amp and the amplifier is a Teac a-h300
