Very good storytelling. This was some epic greek tragedy type writing. They also paid extra attention to the details of the characters and atmosphere of the settings.

I never care about the human characters in a Godzilla movie but WOW did this film change that! Godzilla was offscreen for almost 30 minutes and I did not notice because I was so invested in the characters. So many tragic moments in the story that had me floored. The story, characters, acting, CGI, practical effects, music, pacing, and cinematography were all amazing! This isn't just a impeccable Godzilla movie. It is a masterpiece of a movie, period. 🎉🎉🎉

Just saw it today with my wife - it's our first wedding anniversary - and we absolutely loved the movie! Koichi's struggle with PTSD is one of my favorite plot points of the movie. While my wife was concerned it might trigger me a bit, it was very cathartic how his breakdown with Noriko was and how he made the move from seeking redemption through death to choosing to live. It was a truly moving film and easily my favorite Godzilla movie of all time!

This actually links back to the original 1954 Godzilla movie. In 1954, the War and the Atomic Bombs were very fresh in Japan's memory. The original was very dark and bittersweet. Godzilla, an allegory for nuclear weapons testing and war, appears and unstoppably wrecks everything and leaves. However, the original 1954 Godzilla was extremely cathartic to the Japanese audience. Watching the movie allowed them to process the trauma and grief that had been under the surface. That's why the original Godzilla is so culturally important to Japan. I watched Godzilla Minus One with my SO and we both loved it. It was so good.

Oh gosh, yes, the praise is not only coming from the audience and critics, but the box office is actually doing so well for this film! I can tell that this film is trying not to be over the top with its plot line and characters. The early release with my wife who is not a Godzilla fan like me but she wanted to see this after I showed her trailer and then again on release day with my Godzilla friends. I originally really liked Shin Godzilla. Then a movie essayist I deeply respect said he had a lot of issues with the film. After thinking about it, I think he's right. Now, Shin Godzilla is a really great movie. It's well made and really uses Godzilla well and is a great portrayal and commentary of the failures of government. The problem with Shin Godzilla is how pessimistic it is. Sometimes to a comedic level. Not to say what happened in the movie isn't realistic. In fact, some of the things are so funny BECAUSE it has happened in real life. The scene where a bunch of people in the board room finishes the meeting (and get nothing done), and then every single person enters the same other room for a slightly different meeting with the same exact people. That scene made me laugh out loud because I've been there. Weirdly cathartic to see it on screen. But the problems with the movie sorta stems from Hideaki Anno (creator of Evangelion). He's a great director and he makes great movies. But his complete lack of faith in humanity and his fetish for military equipment is apparent in Shin Godzilla. The human characters in the movie also just kinda feel like parts of a machine. I think it's really interesting to see ineffective and effective bureaucracy in the form of a movie (and have it be actually really interesting). However, all the movie sorta leaves you is a general disdain for the machinery of humanity. The solution presented is to replace the old bureaucrats with the new and hopefully things are better? Something like that. Godzilla Minus One is such a deeply human story. It's more in line with the original 1954 version where it explores the aftermath of war and of people trying to put their lives back together. I adore it very much.

@@azkon7975although i love shin godzilla and is arguably my favorite and i do have to agree with what you said with the characters in it, they don’t seem very human and all to move the plot forward as there is not really any story building with them, which i never truly noticed until seeing minus one and what they could do, watching minus one really gave me what I didn’t know was missing in shin Godzilla. For this reason i really see shin Godzilla dropping off from my favorite (despite him still being my favorite Godzilla to ever be put on the screen) the character building in this movie was just too good and impactful to leave it unnoticed

I disagree about the subtitles. The real problem is advertising and screens. It’s hard to compete with Hollywood here. Could you imagine a trailer played during an NFL game or even a college football game? My cinema didn’t even have a poster up! This is my favorite movie of the year and one of the best experiences I had in a theater in years. I have two young sons. They’re reading the subtitles. They weren’t upset about subtitles. It’s this incredible dramatic story done so eloquently on screen - especially with characters that you care about. Wow. What a movie!

I live in Australia and the only marketing I saw for this movie was here on KZbin with the official trailers. And those trailers slated the movie to only be a Japan and America theatre release. I googled Minus One a few days ago to see what the consensus was on it and sure enough in my search I saw Minus One appear to have screenings at theatres in Australia (albeit very limited). I saw it just yesterday with family, including 2 children that had no issues at all watching a movie that had subtitles. But yeah, the issue was definitely marketing. There was literally no marketing for it in my home city in Aus, not even a poster. It was only by chance did I happen to realise there were screenings of it in my city. And ofc the movie was great. Easily the best Godzilla flick for me in over a decade.

I found GM1 to be a breath of fresh air from the usual Hollywood tropes. No rebellious teenagers, no marriage on the rocks, no quick-wealth schemes, no shadow corporate agendas-- just a simple story about people I grew to care about. America's been polarized for so long, that it's nice to see good people unifying to face adversity, even if for two hours. Let's see Hollywood make something more satisfying with just $15M. @@PV1230 Yeah, I want the people who work on these films to get paid well for their hard work and creativity but I think it would be best for films if directors had to do more with less. Because then you can’t just brush bad writing under the rug with tons of special effects scenes. As many people hate the Star Wars sequels now, just imagine. No one would watch those nonsensical pos if you only saw one lightsaber duel and space battle per film like it was in the OT. But the OT made so much more out of less action sequences because the story was compelling and when those lightsabers ignited, you felt excited and invested in the outcome.

Not only I felt like it did an excellent job in showing the impact of Godzilla's appearance in everyday people's life, but for once I was really invested in the human characters and concerned they may not make it. Great balance, and I feel it really captured and updated some of the magic of the original movie. The fact that it only costed 15M $, while Hollywood with ten times the budget had done the equivalent of children smashing their monster toys, is also a testament of the fantastic job of the people involved in producing this movie.

This movie was incredible! I'm hoping to get to see it a second time. I'd love to see more Godzilla content including your top Godzilla movies! I actually have 2 lists which ones I think are the best Godzilla movies and which are my favorites. Right now (subject to change cause def riding the hype train) Minus 1 is 2nd on my best movies and 3rd on my favorites both times it's right behind the original 54 and my favorite Godzilla movie is the original Godzilla vs Mecha-Godzilla. As for the movie itself, yes they actually wrote a complete good movie and didn't just phone in the human drama thinking "We'll just rely on the special effects to carry the movie!" Also Hollywood needs to take note cause this movie was made for $15M and looks better in a lot of sequences than some of these $200M+ movies. The scenes with Godzilla were awe inspiring, whether it be the tiny bit you get at the start or the Jaws like sequence they've shown in the trailers. Idk what it is but I LOVE getting to see Godzilla in the water, it's like an integral part of the character that we almost never get to see him in there so it was super cool to see that more. Additionally I loved that they took him back to his horror roots, that's two of my fave IPs that have gone back to their horror roots in recent years (Incredible Hulk being the other) for smashing success!

If it was just a film without Godzilla about the characters struggling to piece their lives together after the war, it still would have been compelling.

I am DYING for this to come out on streaming services. I want to binge reaction channels for this movie so bad. I just saw it last night and I’m still in disbelief of what I watched. I looked over at my gf as the movie ended and we were both in absolute shock. She’s usually really picky with what movies she likes, and this one was one of her favorites ever.

I saw it in the early 4DX release (which was less distracting than I expected). This is probably just initial hype but it cleared my top 5 easy. This may change but off the bat'd I go: 1. Gojira 2. Minus One 3. Shin Godzilla 4. vs. Destroyah 5. vs. Hedorah Going to watch it again in standard sometime this week to see if that affects my opinion. I won't talk about the film too much to avoid spoilers for others but I really loved that despite being horrific and and depressing most of the time its main theme was affirmation of life and striving to go forward. It was just the right film for me to see currently, definitely needed that boost.

I watched the original 1954 Godzilla film in preparation for this and then I watched Godzilla Minus One on Friday evening and man, it was great! The story was just so gripping and Godzilla himself was just such a menacing presence. The climax was so thrilling, especially when they mixed in the original theme music and the ending almost made me cry. While watching this, I thought to myself "how on earth did they make this on such a minuscule budget of 15 million dollars"?!

Yeah, I think people are starting to wake up and realize that god old fashioned story writing is the most important thing in any piece of media, not animating the hell out of everything with CGI. You give a team a smaller budget, they have to make it good with writing! And the CGI they achieved with how little they were given looks fantastic. Much more real-feeling in my opinion than anything Hollywood is doing. And isn’t the point of all the effects to be immersive, to feel like you’re looking at real life and NOT a 3 hour video game cutscene? So yeah I have no problem with movies having smaller budgets, as long as everyone involved is still getting paid generously for their hard work and creativity!

Dude, I'm only 2 minutes into your video and I can tell you are awesome. I have that exact same Godzilla toy too! Got it on my fifth birthday. And this movie sounds amazing. I always thought a monster movie like this could be a great set piece for interesting characters. I mean the monster is expected but the people who carry you through the story of this monster have almost limitless potential for who they could be and what they could present.

I think he meant to say that Shin was so good that it broke into his top 10 movies in general, not just Godzilla. So now he might have to knock Shin out of the top 10 in order to squeeze Minus One in there or have 2 Godzilla movies in his top 10 knocking out some other classic movie (I don't know what other movies he has on there, so maybe The Thing, or Back to the Future?).

When people say shin, Godzilla was crazy I think it’s a metaphor for stupid Lasers coming out of his tail The damn thing is just standing in the middle of Tokyo for a couple of weeks Instead of everyone leaving, which is what people would do they’re just kind of their driving around him The whole thing was This movie was exceptional Fantastic acting

Loved your review and it echoes many of my sentiments for the movie. For me, Shin is my favorite behind the original and my feelings post credits on Minus One was that it was right up there, possibly on par with 1954. It managed to evoke so many of those feelings in me as a 35 year old adult that I had when I saw it as a 6 year old kid and that means a lot. I'm spreading the word and telling people to go watch it. It's just too good.

About the breaths, Legendary's sound as it builds up his fins sticks with you, that and the way he solves the problem of the MUTO resisting it from the outside, Shin is actually inventing his beam to counteract the attack coming from the sky the noment it happens, as his biology indicated, it coupled with Who Will Know makes it unforgettable, and Minus having a trigger shot so immediately powerful it creates a cloud and actually hurts him forcing a cooldown period makes you think "yep, they gotta keep making them this fresh", makes me remember how much I liked Singular Point Godzilla's beam evolving a bit along his shape

While this film is a known ip it is still a foreign film which will limit its audience. Also despite its lack of advertising it should do very well due to positive word of mouth. It will make a profit but don't expect the same box office numbers as mainstream movies. If a hollywood actor was hired I assume most of the $15 million budget would have been used up.
