I think the biggest vulnerability is, as a godhand must sacrifice close people, if they escape, and somehow said godhand is still important to them, the godhand can end being a sacrifice him or herself. If Griffith still precious to Casca, despite everything, could she offer Femto as sacrifice to a behelit, maybe swapping places as a new godhand?

In the other hand, if a godhand manages to sacrifice everybody who ever had any affection towards him or her, then nobody is left able to meet the conditions and sacrifice the godhand to a behelit.

I don't think thats how it works. Because they have been sacrificed. The sacrificing has been complete, the brand is within them, they dont need to die for it to be complete, their bodies have already been sacrificed to the dark.

While the Godhand are immensely strong. The fact Femto stops attacks on him by Guts, as well as Void with Skullknight, imply they can be injured like normal entities. If they couldn't, why would they care if they're being attacked?

I think it relates to their willpower to kill them, because I think that to hurt a godhand you need to will it and want it, and guts and the skull knight wanted it badly (especially guts) so that's maybe why the god hand defended themselves

Depends if they need their foes to struggle. If they are incarnations of a god that desires man to have a purpose then by showing your immortality you take that purpose (the desire to kill you) away. They need to provide a reason for man to keep fighting, hinting they are mortal may do just that (or they are killable as you say).

This is the assumption that beserk's version of "god" is the one the guy in the video mentions. Based off of this I personally believe that there is a higher being that belives the God hands are needed to give humanity a purpose and in turn is necessary to make them stronger.

Notice how Void is the thumb of the godhand, as thumbs are the most important finger on the hand and holds the major function of the hand. Femto is the pointing finger, in a sense he is the one leading humans to fulfill the godhands desire. And Slan being the middle finger kind of explains her character a bit lol. And my theory, if guts acquire strength that would equal a godhand, the first one to die is Conrad being the pinky. Edit: i meant Conrad, not Ubik smh

I think in part he died young because he tried to go too far and meddle within an important spiritual debate- the one which this very world centers around (I used to not believe this or think much about it, but now I do). He tried to do more than his human body had the capacity of doing. In addition to some entities wanting for certain truths and outcomes to remain buried. That’s my opinion.

I believe each Godhand Member (or "Finger") represents a core concept that support Causality's grasp and explains the power that Evil has over people. 1. To answer your question, i believe that Void (if he really was the first) did not need direct guidance for his angelic rebirth. All because he is the "Preacher of Causality", basically the idea of a philosopher turned missionary/evangelist. At some point, he came with the realization or idea of Causality being the architect of Fate, started preaching about it, started to cause trouble for the equivalent of the Roman Empire, got locked up, got tortured bad, got taken by despair, was summoned in the Astral World along with Geiseric's imperial capital, realized that his "truth" would only take root with the death of Geiseric's empire and people, wholeheartedly went along with it and established the real founding of Causality's power. Causality only holds the power that is given to it by the belief of people in it, without belief of its power, Causality only has potential. Preaching the inevitability of Causality is truly what made its seed take root. If Evil is seen as being inevitable, then an easy answer to it is to submit to its power and, then it becomes inevitable. 2. Slan is the "Temptress" (yeah, i know, no big surprise here). She basically represents the concept of when we are made to "want" to commit (and receive) horrendous acts of evil or insanity by seeing such things as enticing. You can make anything seem very natural to do if you believe them to hold a grander meaning than the horrendous acts of evil that they are, making barbaric violence and ritualistic death become "honor" and "chivalry" and "of divine nature". The character of Nina examplifies this principle of temptation, she is a weak and fearful person that joins a cult of insane practices to run away from said weakness and fear. The thing is, this path is entropic in nature, it is generally destructive and self-destructive, but gives off the illusion that we don't care about being weak and afraid. The truth, though, is the exact opposite to that we really want. It makes us even more vulnerable and anxious, leaving only insane people satisfied with it all. (Which explains Nina's psychopathic-like behavior, until she is "slapped" out of it and into showing her true self.) Slan founded the basis for all Pagan Cults in the Berserk Universe. True goodness and maturity are difficult and often unseductive while, wrong is so attractive. So who cares if you are labeled as insane or evil so long as you are able to convince yourself that you are free of all cares? 3. Ubik is the "Trickster" (the closest thing to the common idea of the Devil). He does not actually lie, but instead warps the thruths that he tells people to play into their misconceptions and mentalities to effectively manipulate them into either willingly or indirectly commit evil. To be Human is to be imperfect, we all have weaknesses, of which a cunning adversary can turn against us to literally goad us into betraying ourselves and others. 4. Conrad is the idea of, yes, "Pestilence", but more overall, "Tragic Death". (The idea of Conrad is most likely what inspired Nito in Dark Souls.) This one represents the cold, random and uncaring nature of Death that strikes without warning and without compassion, yet also of a completely impersonal and dispassionate nature. Death simply strikes because it will. Regardless of who you are or what you did. When faced with such a grim reality, why do we even care what we do if we are going into a dark fate anyway? 5. Femto is an interesting part in the chasm of Causality. (For once, we don't need to be creative into naming his role, because the other "Fingers" already called Griffith using the title of his representing concept: "Blessed King of Longing".) As the concept of "Longing" or "Desire", he represents both his own longing and ambition alongside the longlasting common desire of Mankind for a "Savior" (the Ultimate Hero). All heros, in a sense, need an ambition to be so (,but not all ambitious people are heros). His longing made him pursue a path that forged him into the image that people have of a savior which played into their longing of finally seeing a savior figure that would bring relief (of the mind only) from the suffering brought on them by the world. This "Savior" is, ironically, the last nail into the coffin that is Causality. We can accept all evils and sufferings if only there is someone to come and relieve us of the burden of having to be responsible for them. He is desired, yet no one sane should desire him. On their own, they only have a limited power which is easily evaded with the will to do so, but, together is when the hand of Causality rarely misses its grasp on Humanity's throat. Overall, Causality is the supranatural manifestation of Human Cowardice. (In the chapter God of the Abyss part 2) We are explained that Causality came to be because of the human desire for reasons behind suffering, it is, in fact, an hypocritical desire in the first place. Said desire was born from humans refusing (unconsciously at least) to see their own responsability into causing the very suffering that plagues them and searching for an escapist reason by viewing it as some sort of "divine cosmic will" instead of finding their own personal reasons to explain suffering. Although GotA part 2 is considered none-canon, the explanation behind the principal of Causality being caused by the Collective unconscious is maintained through a certain Godhand Member: (quote more or less) "This is to be human. This is to be evil." This explains the very principal that struck me when i was listening/reading the Godhand speak, they are "convinced" to the core of their beings that "the Dark Side of Humanity is its true self"! God of the Abyss part 2/The Idea of Evil explains that the Collective Unconsious is made up of the "Dark side of Humanity", not its entirety. This point of believing the Dark Side to be the true self and the Bright side to be a facade/lie is relatable, but anyone with a grain of maturity knows that Human Nature is complex and hence cannot be simplified as "only Evil". The bad part in the Berserk Universe is that this belief of Evil being the only truth, is one if not the most important aspect to Causality. All of it is the natural insane progression of the cowardly decision to not accept suffering as a natural and necessary part of life. (Fun part, here. If Griffith is a Christ figure in the Berserk Universe, Guts eventualy killing him would make him a Judas figure...)

@David Carty Being "perseved" as something is not necessarily "being" that said thing. And, anyway, it would tie in with the concept that, "gods and devils" (demons and angels, christ and antichrist, bad djinn and good djinn, etc) are the same thing and it is only the perception that we have of them that make us name them so. I actually had not really thought of including the antichrist by name here, because i thought that it was off course that the "messiah" of a deeply corrupt and bigoted religion would be it. Which would also make the "Judas" here a tragically and unjustly vilified hero AKA the good guy. Classic subversion of the roles. Anyway, i haven't read the Bible (or whatever is the other appropriate Holy Book called), but i know for a fact that i haven't met Judas nor did i ever hear his version of the events that made him an infamous historical (or, should i say, "religious") "Villain". Hell if i know, if Jesus of Nazareth wasn't truly (like the Romans believed him to be) a nastily genius manipulator that built his Church for the express purpose of producing an army of fanatics believing to serve Goodness Itself to overthrow Rome and/or to massacre and subjugate most of the other religions and beliefs (AKA their followers) to one day ensure the unification of "the world" under a same Nation/God/Belief. A peace built on the bloodbath of centuries of "Holy Wars". The opinions on those characters would then be mostly split depending on individual views on Utilitarianism. I don't get the point about Guts here, he is pretty much at his best when he shows through his actions that he doesn't care how others view him as or misunderstand him as and doesn't let these judgments hinder his willingness to advance. Why should he care of being mistaken for a felon by people that obviously don't know better? We've already seen that with his first encounter with the Holy Iron Chain Knights... (And we all very much know that he would never call himself that.) The battle between good and evil is so timeless because it's subjects are so intricate on their own, nevermind when combining them. What is "evil" if not a perceived "good" by someone else? What is "goodness" if not an ignored evil? The inner darkness is a part of everyone, it is a natural and necessary aspect of what makes us human. It is through facing off against our own inner "demons", finding the courage to aknowledge them and finding the will to refuse them that we find the way through towards the closest thing we will ever have of a "true self". Having this darkness as an inerant part of ourselves will definitely make us do things that will be badly seen by others or/and that we will regret, but accepting this imperfection/impurity and not letting ourselves to be consumed by our demons' insatiable hunger is what i believe humans' true potential is. Hence why the journey towards that goal is rocky at best and hellish at worst. The true danger here is to instead give up by, either refusing to aknowledge our imperfection (AKA our humanity) and build ourselves the illusion of our absence of potential evils (AKA purity) by most often taking example from the perception we have of someone that supposedly matches those characteristics (like a Christ Figure walking on water, a manifestation of Evil in Biblical terms, instead of sinking into it or having to learn how to swim), or, instead, aknowledging said darkness AND embracing it as our true self (which ties in with the Godhand). In those two scenarios, i would ask the spicy question of who's the bigger monster: the Blind white Sheep that believes itself to be unsoiled and its teeth not capable of being used for evil or the openly Sinful black Sheep that knows his teeth to be razor sharp and wholeheartedly procedes with the tearing apart unjudgingly/uncaringly? I got my own answer to that question, but what about you? (Also, did you notice the references/quotings?) (I wasn't certain what aspect specifically and/or personnal take on the wording ended pissing you off so i tried to include as many takes on your points as i could. I hope i don't transmit my head ache to you.)

6:29 in chapter 362 when guts sees skullknights memory back when he was king Gaiseric we see 5 members of the god hand but the only familiar one is void. seeing as that took place approximately 1000 years ago we can assume that all of the previous god hand except void were killed by skullknight and were replaced one by one every 216 years by the current god hand members.

You missed at least one power shown by Femto. When Skull Knight breaks in during the Eclipse in order to rescue Guts and Casca, Femto seemingly warped matter in an attempt to kill SK; he failed in his attempt but killed several Apostles in the attempt. The manga shows this as well as the third movie, where several Apostles are slammed together with so much force they are compacted into an amorphous blob which slowly compacts smaller and smaller until the mass can no longer be seen. Femto prepares this attack a second time but either hesitates (showing possible emotion) or is unable to use the power again (possible limitation of maximum power Femto possessed at the time).

Theory time: Schierke makes reference to the Four Kings of the World as being guardians of humanity while also representing the elements of earth, fire, air and water. They're also meant to act in opposition to the God Hand who now have five members. It's worth noting that in classical natural philosophy, occultism and modern paganism, there's a fifth element: spirit or aether. Together with the other four, they make up the pentagram and in order to properly use one element, one usually has to also invoke the element of spirit. Could it be that at some point, a more humane version of the Eclipse Ceremony could occur and Fifth King of the World could be created? Perhaps he already has in the form of a certain young boy?

Not already, as of now the young boy is possessed by phemt and regains his freedom only during the full moon. He certainly became some major spirit entity after being cleansed by the egg of the new world tho and it would make for great end game material if he could become the "Spirit king" and free himself from phemt possession. To defeat them you should go to their world and fight their real bodies with really powerful magical weapons and overwhelm their defenses, the fact that Void had to alter the space to defend himself from the Skull Knight's sword instead of tanking the attack or using a force field proves that they are not invincible, that there are things that can hurt them. If Guts gets and his sword keep becoming stronger and if they teamed with the Skull Knight they could have a chance to defeat one of the God Hand members in their world.

It could be that Void felt the simplest way to take out Skull Knight was to redirect his attack back at him. You can view it as much as an offensive technique as you can a defensive one. Who knows the extent of damage they can take, considering how quickly Apostles can regenerate? And the God Hand is leagues above Apostles.

M damn, thats a cool theory. it would be really fitting with how berserk is. i feel like its gotten softer since the beginning of it all like how anything good that came to guts would turn bad fast. its gotten soft with his own little family type group and it seems like it could end happy for him if he just gave up and settled down with them. its like when the blacksmith guy (can’t remember his name) said he shouldnt have been fighting for 2 years and shouldve stopped and been there taking care of Casca. if he sacrificed them and had a last battle with the godhand i feel like it would make the story come full circle. i feel like its something guts would do even though hes so strict with himself too cus hes got the demon dog lurking in his mind waiting for him to reach that rage again, and killing femto has kinda become his dream

Suddenly the reveal makes more sense. Berserk is about Guts' journey and discovery of the Astral World, which would make The Idea of Evil the final reveal before the end of the story. So the way I figure it is due to the Incarnation Ceremony, Femto was brought fully to the physical world. He took over the body of the demon child but they became one. Honestly speaking, the only way I see Guts fighting on even ground is reversing everything. That is, if there is an idea of evil, then there should be an idea of good. Maybe the transformation process is not identical to the God Hand. It would be nice to see a force of opposition equal to that of the God Hand. Griffith starts off small but with the largest of aspirations and became a God Hand. Guts started off as absolutely nothing without any aspiration - maybe he will inherit something also?

You're missing the point of the Idea of Evil. It doesn't have an opposite, for we don't tend to look for explanations for 'good'. Humans are pretty narcissistic, we assume the good we do comes from within. But, because of that narcissism, we find it difficult to believe evil could come from us directly, so we create an 'idea' that is to blame. An 'idea of Good' is unnecessary.

I've always found one of the most intriguing aspects of anime/manga to be that there's that ambiguity begging to be answered, which is why I think a lot of fan communities build around it. Other forms of art are designed to be conclusively explained, but when you have characters like this (I'm most interested in Void) whose very anonymity of beginning is part of their appeal it's irresistible. A person's mind needs to know.

Absolutely; it has to be done tastefully. When you can tell the writers are holding out just to keep you viewing that's when it annoys me. Characters and their world should only ever flow the way that would make sense for them. That's why we can't stand when strong characters lose just because the plot needs it, or why we can tell an ingenious plot twist from a contrived one.

Its truly the foundations of the series and suggests that, Guts' very existence is the result of the collective human will (the idea of evil/God) being split between wanting to manifest Griffith and wanting to route for Guts, defying fate, but also playing into the turning of the pendulum of Man's will towards something more open minded and forward. Not archaic, anti-magic, and tyranical like Griffith's manifest destiny.

With the God Hand being able to finally fully manifest themselves after the world turned to fantasia. I can tell at least what they symbolize, or what their domains are, kinda. Void being just one giant brain symbolizes the evil of knowledge. Slan is a tangle web of bodies, like a forest of people in one giant orgy, symbolizes the evil of lust, or extreme sexual desire. Ubik is in one giant weird parade, symbolizes the evil of rampant revelry/vices or celebration. Or at the very least, the evil of "fun/joy" at the expense of others. Conrad is a mass or sea of rats with skeletons, symbolizes the evil of disease, and the despair from the suffering and death caused by disease. And Femto/Griffith, well, he is the last emperor of the last nation/empire on earth, that rules over both men and apostles alike. And by the manner he achieved that status, symbolizes the evil of the search for power/domination and unrelenting ambition. That's my interpretation at least.

Personal non-committal hypothesis, now that we will never truly know: The Godhand created Femto to be a false saviour, with their main goal being to give humanity what they wanted, a hero to defeat evil. That hero wouldn't be Griffith, but Guts, the current holder of the Egg of the King. The Idea of Evil was birthed from mankind's need for meaning, but it is also deeply ingrained in man that evil must be defeated. Femto came as a false king to which evil may rally, and Guts was set up to do what heroes do; defeat evil. I don't actually believe this, it is far to saccharine. But I like to toy with scenarios as much as the next person. I think that it would end with Guts tearing down the Ganeshka World-Tree, and with Griffith's arrogance being turned against Void, resulting in Guts having to choose between vengeance against Griffith, or helping Griffith defeat the God Hand. It's the general vibe I got.

I think his actions during the eclipse are part of the fates plan, as later the cursed fetus helps him form his physical body. I know you can’t go through every comment, and I also don’t want to annoy you or other subscribers by asking the same questions again. I apologize if I did, cause that’s not my intention. I talk to my coworker about Berserk everyday( and other anime). Maybe I could message you onTwitter if you find that better. My Theory is that the god hand appear as they see themselves or aspire to be. Griffith has hawk characteristics including his helm to represent his banner of the hawk. I would assume Slan sees herself as a attractive young woman and idolizes angels. Maybe she was a nun or servant of the holy seal and swore an oath celibacy before breaking it and eventually meeting the god hand. Void appears that way maybe cause he wants to remember his past life, through his pain and torture that inflicted him. Since a sacrifice has to be something cherished by the chosen individual, Void must have cared about Skull Knights Kingdom in order to sacrifice them. The small one might have been a scholar, given how he talks in the anime, I haven’t seen really people wearing glasses in the manga so far, so he must’ve lived somewhere in a kingdom or town. Doesn’t seem to be a soldier in his past life. Just my thoughts. Would very much like your opinion Ryan and others.

The thing about Kentaro Miura is the comic book world he created wasn't that different from our world and the roles he had his characters set in aren't too different from the roles the elite's characters play. He was killed by the elites for revealing too many details about how this world operates. The fewer people know how to play the game or that they are playing a game in the first place the better for those players whos familys spawn in the game fully aware of everything they are getting into while the rest of us fumble in our ignorance from spawn to death over and over again.
