If you see carefully, then all three upper moons were so powerful that 2 to 3 hashiras together also were not able to defeat them. And logically they even can't. It was always some outer factor that cause their defeat. Akaza = previous memories Doma = poison Kokushibo = previous memories. and realization And even in case of muzan, the poison made him week by increasing his age.

Tanjiro's lifestory is simple! He had five siblings out of which he is the oldest. His father died due to a disease (possibly due to using the Hinokami Kagura dance without training his breathing as it is a breathing style) and Tanjiro used to sell coals in the market and do the other chores to look after his family. But Muzan killed his family and made Nezuko a demon. He meets Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira who instructs Tanjiro to train under Giyu's master Urokodaki and participate in the final selection to join the demon Slayer corps. He fights the demons and manages to defeat them one by one and finally kills Muzan after using the thirteenth form of Sun Breathing, but since he was poisoned by Muzan, he instantly turns into a demon who was able to walk under the sun. But Tamayo and Shinobu's antidote works and he becomes a human again. After the final fight Tanjiro lost his one eye and one hand. Only Giyu and Sanemi from the Hashiras survived the fight. Since Muzan was dead, the demon Slayer corps was disbanded with Giyu and Sanemi as the last Hashiras. Tanjiro returned to his hometown with Nezuko, Zenitsu and Inosuke and started living a normal life. Though it wasn't shown in the manga but the last chapter suggests that, Tanjiro married Kanao in the future.

It was a situation which made him kill his mother. I agree what he did was absolutely terrible but he is a well written antagonist and deserved more fights and screen time
