Wooo.. If my sleepy brain is correct, you posted this 5 minutes ago. That means I have something to look forward to this afternoon. Chef Dave's videos are comfort food! For those that don't know David, he is the most down to earth and nonpretentious dude out there. He shows everything including his mistakes and doesn't hound you for likes and subscribes. Enjoy his warmth, humor, and knowledge. If you have a correction, be nice about it. The dude is a sponge, always trying to learn from himself and others. Be like Dave!

@@Reallybigmonkey1 you are most and deservedly welcome. I am an old fan/friend on a new account, per long absences and forgotten passwords. I'll eventually access my original account and comment from there. I miss our exchanges via the messaging system, that is impossible for me to find. It seems to be gone. Regardless, I have periodically kept up with you and happily researched your older content that I downloaded years ago. Please don't ever stop making videos, especially with your son. The chemistry is great... but keep him away from open flame. He's too fixated on lighter fluid. 😁

@@Lydirius that's a great and overlooked point. I tend to stop videos as soon as I figure out that they are thinly veiled "reviews". Don't get me wrong, I'll look for videos for reviews that are presented directly as reviews, but none of this: "Good thing I have this specific product for this particular situation. I happen to have this link for this 5 star product here, here, here, and here, in the comments. To All my fans: like and subscribe!". Yeah, Dave has never been like that. In fact he has his own products he could peddle, but won't. I've bugged him on more than one occasion to do so. I would love to see him with an eBay store. Okay Dave, this is the last time I will do this (I'm lying), please make an eBay store full of your prototypes, working models, and other gear. I'm telling you, we'll buy your stuff (I'm not lying).

My wife: Do you really need another knife/gun? Me: When did "need" become part of the equation? I live two miles from Ka-bar/Cutco, fifteen miles from Ontario Knives, and eighteen miles from Case Knives, so those of us who appreciate a good knife are always "in the know" for their seconds. (All of their seconds have a scratch in the handle, or on the knife itself, and are hardly noticeable when just out of the box, and totally unnoticeable after a few uses.) Hoping and praying for you that the water doesn't rise any more. We lost almost everything back in the '72 flood, and moved to high ground after that.

Dave, I love you and your videos. I've been around a very long time. Making funny comments. But I have learned so much from you. I was living on the Suwannee river by Mayo Florida. A flood plane. It floods when YOU get to much rain. I spent 4 years crapping in a bucket, and no running water. I was living in a small shed. I used a lot of the things you taught me. I'm 60 year's old and disabled. Keep making your videos. You help people. And I'll keep making my strange comments.

News from the news team: Turn around, Don't drown. This is a message from the KY3TV Weather Team. I'll give you a great picture to think about. Every late spring on Tablerock Lake in Branson, Missouri, we would go to the lake & we had to take a John boat to the dock to get to our houseboat. It would flood so bad the dock would be chained in to the 1st notch system then they would tie the boat from shore to dock & we would have to put all are food, clothes & what ever we was bringing to the houseboat for the weekend & send it in the John boat. I think we would make about 10 trips back & forth. It was a job just getting to the boat to have fun on the lake. It's a lot like your fish camps in the south, but we don't have monster animals that have a mouth full of teeth & make you there lunch. I liked the video. Lots of great information David. You stay dry & I hope you don't have to deal w/water in your basement. I have to deal w/water in my cellar & it's a pain to carry a bulge plumb w/50' hose & battery down those tight stairs to get 2' of water out of it. Oh it's a mess. Good luck & I'll keep you in my thought about water damage, Chris from Missouri

Hello my outdoors friend, thank you for sharing this very informative video. You are a wealth of great information. My first knife was Case folding knife, given to me by my Grandfather. I carried it for 52 years. In 1966 I purchased a Puma fixed blade with elk antler handle. I carried both those knives up until they were stolen by a 'druggie' neighbor in 2011. I recently purchased the OKC Air force survival knife. I will give it a test next week on a 5 day campout in the Northern Sierras. All the best to you my friend. Keep those great videos coming along. 🤗

Another great video! I finally got time to watch it. My first true outdoor knife was a Buck 110 Folding Hunter and I still enjoy using one. I use a good old fashion Rapala Fillet knife for fish. My current favorite is either my Ontario RAT 7 or one of my LT Wright knives. I don't know that I have a future knife but it may be a Ontario RTAK II or the ESEE Jungalas. Enjoyed the Video Dave and don't work yourself into the ground this March.

One of my first filet knives was a Normark 'presentation' model with a polished handle. It got light use since I didn't get to fish much. Mostly, I used it to slaughter sheep in a Halal method for my Muslim friends. The steel ring sharpening system I used ate up the blade quickly. My 'future' knife could be the German made version of the Puma White Hunter with stag handles. Like most of us, I have plenty of knives and, like you, I have special knives for special purposes. I like a French Opinel #8 for slicing meat and vegetables--thin, locking blade; strong pin joint, comfortable wood handle; timeless Classic. It can also do fine feather sticks, if needed. When I need a straight, strong camping blade today, I take one of my ADVENTURE SWORN custom knives--either a convex grind Nesmuk pattern 'Guide' knife or my choice of their Scandi grind knives.

My first serious knife were the 499 aircrew survival, I carried this everywhere. Even on whitewater canoe trips. I obtain my first in 1975. I have own several of them, I still have one from the early eighties . Used this knife for cutting rope, camp chores. I always took care of my knifes. Has never failed me. I own many modern knife now but when I’m feeling old school I will put a 499 on my belt. I have a small collection of these. My current knife is a Morakniv Companion Heavy Duty, with a Cold Steel 4000352 Kukri. This will be what I will use for a while, I have no future plans for a new set up yet. Gear room videos will do just fine for now and far better than putting yourself in danger. Hope it gets better soon over there and here. It's always great when you do a knife video and I have learnt so much from your advice over the last few years. Many thanks for that! As I have stated before, just walking into the woods with a knife in the rucksack is frought with danger here as if stopped by the police and searched, its a 4 month prison sentence with a very big fine. Maddening for us bushcrafters here. I have two of mine hidden in the woods. It's the only way I can get around it. Your video was, as usual, excellent and informative and many thanks for your efforts. Look forward to your next from that wonderful gear room of yours 😀👍. Stay safe in those floods. Lol, more than just two arm floaties are needed for this river! I figure with my large amount of knives I can dedicate half to wood carving and half to food prep. Just a personal choice but it's easier to keep up with what I've used for beef pork or chicken cutting by just saying only stainless touches food. It also keeps em sharper by on touching food. My stainless knives only need stropping. My carbon knives are the only ones I take to a stone. Oh, I've already got a bushcraft black Mora attached to my SP53. It's the Condor Terrasaur I was thinking about getting. Take care and thanks for watching Brother

Hi Dave! I know it must be hard for you to narrow your collecting of bushcraft knives down. My bushcraft night is a I have no darn idea what it is. It was given to me by my Granddad when I was 10, the day I went on my first round up on his ranch. That knife has been retired to a display case in the hall. After that I used various Moras up until several years ago when I found the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 made in Finland. Since finding it I have not looked at another bushcraft knife. I originally bought 2, but I seriously doubt I will ever have to use the second one as the first one has taken everything I have put it through. Other than my sharpening the blade it still looks like the day I got it. Thanks for sharing... you have sparked an interest in the Mora Garberg. Thanks for sharing Dave, say hi to Nick, would have liked to have seen his 3 as well!

I enjoyed this video a lot. Moras are great knives, and their sheaths do not have glass fibers in the plastic so they don’t ruin your edge when you insert or remove the knife. When I bought my home many years back, every time it rained, my back yard flooded. It looked level for the most part, so I didn't understand what caused the flooding. For security reasons, I had a chain-link fence installed around the back and sides of the house. A few months later, my grandmother brought it to my attention... "That fence went up, and the flooding stopped." I guess there was a slight runoff undetectable by the human eye from the neighbor's adjacent yard. Needless to say, the fallen leaves and a little grass was all I needed to divert my water problem. No reply necessary, just commenting. I loved the video.

Wow! This is truly a new take! And very thought provoking. 1. First knife: now this goes back about 60 years! Yep! I had just joined the Boy Scouts, and my Dad set me a target - If I got 5 badges before my birthday (in November) he said he'd buy me a real cool scout knife I'd otherwise have to wait till Christmas for. Well, needless to say I grafted hard on those badges an got the fifth one two weeks before my birthday! Dad walked to his cupboard and came back with my present. It was exactly what any boy would dream about. It was a medium size fixed blade camp knife with horn handles, but the cool thing was the much smaller similar looking knife in it's own sheath on the front of the big one! It was the envy of all my mates for months! 2. Current knife. About 20 years ago I started making knives as a hobby and made some very nice stuff. One knife was my own design called The Bushwhacker! It is a brute 9 inch blade, 1/4 inch thick stock, stainless. It had a very full belly (almost a bolo shape, a finger choil, and wood handle slabs [ red jarrah]). It was hollow ground but steep and not very wide, to keep the edge quite strong. I have used that knife ever since but it's now starting to feel it's age. I suspect that the Engineering Company who did the hardening made it a bit too hard, as all the blades in that batch started showing metal fatigue and some splits appear at the blade edge. This knife taught me a lot about what can be achieved with a large knife! 3. Future knife. Co-incidentally, I am right now busy finally deciding on the purchase of my future knife. Front runner currently is the Cold Steel Trail Master III San Mai. All things being equal, I'll have it by this time next week! I hope you guys are OK after the flood!

Oh God, my first real knife was an old HJ dagger, like the ones the Hitler Youth had. In the past and today, I have a good German knife Lindner 440 (is a hunting knife, fits very well in the hand), a paratrooper's knife, my old AK 47 bayonet (you can shave with it) and a 25 years old Leatherman. With this, I can get along everywhere. 5 - 6 different axes, up to 1500 grams of different length and a machete. Laugh, I speculate with a Ranger combat knife, very stable and quite usable in the forest.

@@Reallybigmonkey1 The problem is, once I start buying nice knives. Then I don't stop. And you have to take care of the knives, like axes and machetes. Seal them well with oil and wax the blades. They'll last a long time. Rub a few drops of oil into the sheath and you'll never have any problems. I learned that almost 50 years ago, the East German paratroopers. There were no blunt knives, every blade was sharp as a razor and was cared for.

That buffing compound existed back then, it was just used for buffing (more or less aggressive, depending on the grit/granulometry) pretty much anything (pots, pans, weapon magazines, silverware, you name it)! Industrial buffing used liquid compounds (pretty much the same stuff, but... Way more inexpensive!). This stuff is still used all around the world for surface finishing. Actually... You can save a lot of money by buying the non "knife-specific", identical alternative. There's a whole lot of versions to choose from: for stainless steel, carbon steel, etc.!

Good stuff, Dave! Funny, I figured I was a couple years older than you but you're a couple years older than me! In my own defense, it ain't the years it's the mileage. ;-) I'm a chef by trade so I have thousands of dollars worth of kitchen knives, and as a lifetime outdoors-person I probably have thousands of bucks worth of outdoors knives as well. But while I lust over 'em and obsess over new ones I'm strangely agnostic when it comes to using them. I've always got a folder in my pocket, and when I'm in the woods I'll usually have an ESEE Izula and then one larger knife...but there's really no rhyme nor reason to what the larger knife will be. Sometimes it's my Ontario RAT7, sometimes it's my JK Camp Knife, other times it's my Terävä Skrama, etc. While I'm really a knife nerd in general it doesn't matter a lot to me which one I'm using, they're all nice. Most of my PSK-type kits have a Mora because 1) they're cheap and 2) they're great. Probably my dirtiest secret is that I don't really use a knife all that much in the field. Sure, I'll cut cordage and prepare food and very often baton wood for kindling. But the heavy lifting I do with a saw, a Fiskar's splitting and lately my buddy's Husquavarna!

I think the first knife is connected to your mentor. My father started me with a Barlow. I was born late in his life so he had different ideas. He did most things with a Barlow. Fish, squirrel, rabbit all cleaned with the Barlow. If you needed more knife you got a butcher knife from the kitchen. I always carry a pocket knife. I clean my knives after use. It is one of the reasons I don't carry a SAK. To much to clean and dry after use. Because of that most of my food prep is with a slip joint. In fact I rarely use kitchen knives. I use my outdoors knives so I know how they work for food prep. My wife frowns on it but she knows I clean them as well as anything in the kitchen. She also frowns when I pull out my pocket knife in a restaurant because the knives there are garbage. After 32 years she has learned knife tolerance.

Another nice video. My preference for a food prep knife is one similar to your Cold Steel Canadian (a Grohmann knockoff but a bargain), the Grohmann stainless steel Camper. It has a thin blade with a full flat grind and the handle design gives you finger clearance for cutting on a flat surface like a cutting board or poly sheet which I usually carry for food prep. The blade shape is elliptical which also aids in allowing finger clearance when cutting on a flat surface, allowing you to tilt the blade at any angle and still cut.

But back to the knives, great selection as always, and the Garberg is great and for me well worth the money, it's now my main knife (I only have 12 lol). Thanks again Dave, hope it dries out for you soon, take care buddy 🙂👍

Quite an array of cutlery, and logic!! Lovre it!! Camillus USA is out of business. Someone bought the trademark and produce knives with a Camillus stamp but not the same quality as the old days!!

Refreshing as always! Cant go wrong with a Morakniv. I am considering changing out my older kitchen cutlery to some "real" knives. Been in the kitchen too many times wondering why I am still using knives that are nowhere near the quality of my pack knives. Very enjoyable. Your river looks a lot like our river does this time of year...goes from 4 feet to 30 feet deep with the rains - it's a huge watershed area. Im always amazed by the power of the water! Stay safe!

I can remember a great aunt, big on her silverware, used to polish it with something she called brick dust. Don't think it was actually brick dust, it was a brick coloured lump like those shining compounds you had, wish I'd paid attention to what it actually was. Yes, you stick to favourite knives after a time and they're often not the expensive ones. I value my Mora 2000, a Jakaripukko, its just right and half a dozen traditional folding knives. Always lived in axe/hatchet country, never owned a machete.

Now that's interesting! May have been the same polishing compound. Hard to beat a Mora! You gotta try a machete. Thanks for watching!

I found this interesting. Thanks for the video Dave. It's pretty wet here. Haven't been able to walk in the woods where I live for weeks. It's too wet. It keeps raining and there's nowhere for the rain to go because everywhere is already saturated.

Thanks for the seen at the river the rain has been somewhat crazy. And barely any snow it only snowed one time and all the school's where closed. And when i go fishing and or sometimes camping but last summer was extremely to hot for me to be outside. And as i was watching how you have attached and knife on your machetes. And i like how you put them together and i got a machete from Wal-Mart and i have a few knives and i took some paracord on it and this was the first time i have put something like this together but being my very first time of putting this together man i may say it tournd out really nice. But i have not had the chance to put it to a test yet till my wife and i goes camping where there is no one around me where i live at everyone thinks they know me but i don't interact with them. But about the knives i will have at lest two or three knifes one i will have a camping king and two more and like the corporal coroner. He even say's two is one and one is none. And i agree with that old philosophy gose i really agree with that my friend. And i had a couple time's that i ran into i needed to start having at lest two knives at all time's inthe outdoors. Dave i like to send you the pitcher of what i put together just to let you show. But i have never made a video before I'm shy i will not be able to speak right on video i will get tung tied. But really i like to thank you for your videos you are a cool guy but friend you and your family be cool and peace.

Good video. For some reason I'm not into knives that much. I bought a Gerber many years ago and its a really good knife and has never failed me. I wish I could post a pic of it here. Has like a 10 inch blade full tang and a rubberized handle and saw teeth on the back to saw through bone. I mainly use it for processing big game, skinning and deboning. I baton with it sometimes and that works good too. For serious firewood prep I use Silky saws and hammer forged hatchet, and I dig holes with a hammer forged pick hatchet tomahawk handle, works much better than any kind of shovel. I live in Colorado and usually hunt/camp in October/November at 10,000 feet elevation. I use a tent with a wood burning stove and staying warm is the top priority if you wanna stay alive. The steel stoves that I have been using over the last several years alway end up warping around the door so I am going back to a cast iron stove this year. Also keeping water from freezing is also a priority. Anyways if you have a facebook page I can post a pic of my knife. Great video by the way and I hope it dries out soon.

Great video Dave and I must say, that's quite the man cave you have there. Looks well organized. I love Mora knives and I probably have 30 in my Mora box, many of those in leather sheaths or modified factory sheaths with danglers and firesteels. They are my go-to knife for the woods and what I measure all other knives against.

Hello there my friend. I know rising water, I was in a neighborhood hit pretty hard in the 2016 flood in Louisiana, my mobile home was 52 and and half inches off the ground, 12 years I had lived there and not one inch of standing water, and after I got back to it the water mud line was over 4 feet inside my home, over 8 feet of water. I lost all I owned , even my car that I was repairing. The video you have of that river gives me the heebie geebies, rivers like that freak me out
