When the Air Ambulance crew receive a call about a surfer who suffered a heart attack, their first thought is whether or not they have enough fuel to take him to hospital. With fuel running low and the tide coming in, it’s a race against time to stabilise him before he and the helicopter are stranded on the Cornish coast.

Err.. can someone please explain why beaches in Cornwall (of all places?) aren’t sufficiently equipped with oxygen?! They’re some of the busiest beaches in the entire U.K. That’s quite concerning! Glad he ended up making a full recovery, thank goodness he was out of the water when he went into cardiac arrest. Well done to the lifeguards & paramedics x

@@coover65 Out of interest, how cold do you think the U.K. is during spring - late summer months..? Our summers, due to climate change, in most areas of the country, now easily reach in excess of 30C+ with top whack humidity. Where I live (East Anglia) it can easily reach highs of 35-36C, lowest is around 28-29C, our homes are built to keep us warm with no air conditioning units in sight.. they’re becoming more & more unbearable. We aren’t equipped for such long, hot summers, which often start from spring (at least where I live you’re lucky to see spring - it often bypasses it & goes straight to summer), our winters are incredibly mild too & I don’t recall the last time we had snow (a freak weather incident in 2018 called ‘the beast from the east’ i believe - which lasted a matter of 4-5 days, then went straight into a few weeks of spring & into summer; before that I’d say 5+ years easy! I used to get snow every winter when I was younger). Depending on where you live in Australia, you get highs of 40C+ don’t you? So we don’t have much difference in temps at all. Plenty warm enough to swim in the ocean, & even when it isn’t, us Brits aren’t particularly afraid of the cold - looked like these guys were making the most of the spring weather & getting some surfing lessons in ready for summer.

@@LauraBidingCitizen I was thinking more water temperature. Here we usually have a water temp of high 20s. I know the UK "can and does get hot", I guess the main difference is here it's guaranteed to be at least 30 every single day without fail from late spring to late autumn. I was stationed in a town where from October to March every single day was at least 42. The coolest it got overnight was 28. You had the AC on 24/7. And to top it off, in the 18 months we were there, It rained twice; both for 15 minutes each time. I guess it's all relative; if we have days even in winter where the maximum is below 20 we start screaming about the coming of the next ice age, and if its 35 everybody says "it's a bit warm, hey?". Darwin's the worst; hot and humid all year round with just a hot and dry winter or a hot and wet summer. Cant swim in croc infested creeks, only beach areas with shark and stinger nets or a pool.

Please let me explain why I provided my colleague with his name. I was that other guy, an off duty paramedic who just managed a remote location cardiac arrest with no equipment other than a defibrillator. Airway management with no equipment, 4 mins of CPR, 2 shocks, followed by a Rosc. A post Rosc reassesment with the tide lapping around his feet and no monitoring equipment to hand. A decision to relocate to a safe area and utilise the appropriate resource to get this PT the definitive care in the right location- a cath lab.. What the edited footage doesn't show is a complete handover with all information including Avpu, Gcs, downtime and Rosc time. But if you wanna pick holes in the fact I reminded my friend his name you crack on pard.. life saved end of..

You never know when this kind of thing happens.. Was doing some sit-ups when shit went really bad at my fitness centre, a woman upstairs collapsed while sitting on the bike after just 3 minutes. A woman from easy line started screaming: someone call 112 (Danish Emergency Services) a few others started cpr. Had my phone next to me the entire day. Probably ran the fastest I ever did and had the dispatcher in my ear right until the medivac team came. She got airlifted to Odense Medical Centre and she was clinically dead for a few minutes but alive. Thougth It was a heart attack, but It was a brain aneurysm. Now I know why the defibrilator wont shock her. Saw her alive 5 months later and she was without after effects and no medal or commendation can make up for the thank you

Do you mean whether or not US paramedics administer these strong drugs? Oh boy they do! Especially Ketamine is sometimes handed out quickly. While in Europe, the emergency services often rely on emergency physicians to come out to the patient (stay & play), in the US paramedics usually just administer first aid and pain killers and take you to hospital (scoop & shot/run). This leads to US paramedics handing out ketamine and other related stuff like its nothing (I have even seen porgrams where police officers carry a small dose of ketamine for administering!). Paramedics are not common in the USA, only EMT's. Only a paramedic can issue drugs of any kind and in most of the world only intensive care/critical care paramedics can issue the extremely high end painkillers.

@@tazzer9 So are you saying EMTs can't administer drugs and are more common than paramedics? Defeats the purpose of actually having EMS if they can't treat patients appropriately. Here in Australia most states have only paramedics, no EMTs. Basically two levels; Advanced Care and Critical Care paramedics. AC level can administer narcotics but CCPs administer ketamine. It seems the US is the only developed country not progressing with paramedicine. Here it's a profession on par with nursing while in many parts of the US you have EMTs with only a few months of training and earning crap pay running around in ambulances

It's also for safety of beach-goers. There are certain directions you can't approach a helicopter while the rotors are turning, mainly the front, because the rotors are closer to the ground in the front than at the doors. If they aren't shutting down and there are other bystanders the other medic (crewchief) will stay behind to make sure everyone is safe. There are videos of people running up to helicopters as soon as they land and they get hacked up by the rotors.
