Handshake: I absolutely HATE those fist-crusher-handshakes. It's so insecure when they think they have to impress/intimidate/submit you by trying their best to break your hand. Like, seriously, how old are you? Solid handshake, yeah, absolutely, but trying to crush my hand everytime we shake, that's just pathetic.

I received a dead fish last week in Port Huron, MI. It was an inspector on our cell site. I nearly felt bad for squeezing so hard, but it was normal pressure. He didn’t wince, but I felt all the bones in his gentle hand!

In Canada, "Sorry" can be an admission of empathy, not just an admission of guilt

Of course. New Yorker here. "Sorry for your loss." Or "You're in a lot of pain. Sorry." But there are people who apologize for the silliest things. I was getting off an elevator a few weeks ago and a woman was there to get on. We both began to step in the same direction - oops - and she says "sorry". For me that's an obvious sign of an underlying psychological difficulty. The proper word is "pardon me". Not "excuse me" - you say that when you burp. She says "sorry" and I said in a most neutral way, "Don't apologize for everything."

In Canada, saying sorry considered good manners, not a sign of low confidence. You'll actually be considered to be rude or possibly American if you don't do it lol. In Canada, real men do the sorry thing. When in Rome.

@team-zracing7476 2 ай бұрын
@@robertgirardin1307 Sure and that's fine. Word usage is allowed to evolve, and a culture is allowed to evolve it's language usage, but it still says "Canadians" all over it to me. Sounds funny. There's no doubt in my mind that this usage of the word "sorry" comes from an overly liberal application of politeness - which Canadians are obviously known for. Nothing against the country or its people. Italians are known for certain things, Brits for things, New Yorkers for things, etc.

As a union carpenter who consistently works on large projects and interacts frequently with different people in the construction industry I would like to add to the handshake conversation. I am accustomed to a firm grip, I have one myself. A slight but important nuance to the handshake when you have a strong hand is to not crush the other man’s hand. Be firm, but do not come off as if you are attempting to dominate the man whose hand you are shaking. I am almost as turned off by a dead fish as I am a man who feels the need to exert excessive force in a greeting. I need it to be firm, but dislike a man who feels the need to shake my hand like he is trying to break it

As far as first impressions, a limp or awkward handshake is the worst. Implies they are insecure, self centered, unfocused, or dismissive. Might not be any of those but that’s how I feel when a guy can’t bother to give a good firm handshake. The opposite of that is when a guy will keep squeezing way past what is appropriate and now suddenly you’re in a grip contest with a stranger. Just as lame.

No that's solid advise. But it also depends on the shirt some are worn untucked in spring/summer/autumn when it is nice weather. dress shirts should indeed be long so you can really tuck them in and they stay in place.

One of the most important things about ironing is to NEVER put the iron directly on the clothing. In the Army they taught us to use a damp, not soaking wet, white cotton cloth about the size of a pillow case (or a pillow case in a pinch) as a buffer between the iron and the cloth. Prevents burns and also gives a great crease because of the moisture. Put your laptop on either a laptop stand or a decent strength mesh baker's rack (which helps with airflow!) to combat nerd neck and bad posture. Haha! The Sorry in Canada is the equivalent of Excuse Me in America! We aren't really sorry about whatever it is we are more than likely just being polite, acknowledging any stress caused and moving on. I have a trick for eye contact. It is to look just above the person's eyes. It works great because it appears you are looking straight at them, but you are not. My phone is just out of reach while sleeping yet close enough that I can hear the emergency call siren. If I forget a name I use a tactic of generalization. I start the conversation with Hey there! How are you doing? How is your family/job/dog doing? I am much better at associating a significant event with someone if I forget a name, which still makes it look like you are interested in them. (I've done whole conversations with someone and never once said their name.)

The appropriate firmness of a handshake also varies across cultures. Before you judge another man for their handshake, make sure you’re accounting for that.

The thing I never know is how firmly to shake a woman’s hand. I’ve known some who don’t want a firm handshake from a man, and others who will shame you if it’s not firm enough.
@katwitanruna

I want to bring back bows. A proper handshake should be firm with the wrist firm as well. I do have a question. I’ve been disabled since 2009 but is it still proper etiquette to wait for a woman to proffer her hand before putting out yours? Oh and for the record gentlemen, when you try to crush a woman’s hand she automatically presumes you have SDE. Every. Time. Look her in the eyes (if you have trouble with that look at the space behind their head or their forehead and it’ll come off the same), then grasp, gently squeeze and immediately release. Trust me, women will be impressed.

Speaking of crutch words. People need to retire words and phrases such as amazing, literary, basically, bro, super, it is what it is, I know right, wait, what?, spit on, on point, etc.
@chasatch
@chasatch 3 ай бұрын
Crutch words and crutch phrases are a particular pet peeve of mine. Three examples of over used phrases are "out there", "at the end of the day", and "bada bing, bada boom". I consider the use of such phrases as an indication that the speaker has nothing of worth to say! Antonio, you regularly throw in "gents" and "guys". Your audience knows who they are, I see little value in constantly reminding them!
