The more rivals you have, the more villain points you can accumulate due to them making contact with you. But the drawback, tougher to race as they block/try to wreck you. Take it from someone who ALWAYS plays as a villain.

The reason why on Levi Strauss with the two trucks being able to make it is because the AI have little to no wear or fuel burn as much as the player. You could run a full race and they wouldn’t come in till like halfway or almost halfway
