I did 7 months in Vandalia and Chillicothe in MO. What astounded me more than anything is that women would be there talking about how they miss their kids and going to every church service and prayer circle begging to go home to them. These same women were sent home and came back MORE THAN ONCE in those 7 months. My kids were 9 and 3. Although they were in good hands, there's nothing like MY hands. I truly believe that time was harder on them than me. I could NEVER do that to them again. That was 21 years ago. My son doesn't remember it at all, but my daughter does. The rare times it comes up I still feel awful.😔 That lil stay took me straight out of my hot girl days and put me right into soccer mom mode. God bless these ladies. I'm sure being drug addicted makes it much harder. I wish them the best.

I love the Wee Ones program. These women not only get to bond with their babies but they also participate in things like parenting classes and drug treatment and that is very beneficial. I do feel the same as most in the comments about Bobbi. Not only has she lost 5 kids already but she was trying to say that she didn't need drug treatment. That is a sign that her mentality is not where it needs to be in order for her to really change her life. Even the counselor has doubts about her future. They have a similar program in Minnesota. The babies don't get to live there full-time though, they get to spend weekends. Babies and children through age 12. They do an extensive selection process to decide which women are eligible and they have an individual unit the women live in and the general population have no contact or access to the babies/kids as they visit and spend weekends with their mothers.. If you have harmed a child in no way should you be able to keep your baby. Remember Addiction is an Illness. When babies get taken away for using drugs you need to get better. No one can get better for their children. It’s something that have to want. I know Bobby has made bad choices. I hope she will be ok. It seams as tho Jail was what got her sober. How did we get here as a society? Non-violent offenders full term behind bars and having their baby taken away after 24 hours. We just have to do better. It is not acceptable for a newborn baby to lose their mother over non violent offenses. Why punish the baby to get back at the mother?

@@ilarious5729 that’s nonsense. A newborn isn’t developed enough to understand what criminal behavior is. Taking them away from their mother deprives them of bonding they need for their development. Sorry I have no sympathy for these people!

True, but being taken away from Mum after 24 hours could affect the child in later life as they won’t be able to form a strong attachment during the critical period. Also, some women aren’t even aware they are pregnant until they are in prison, and the knowledge that they now have a baby to look after can help some people stay out of trouble. I agree that, those who have committed violent offences and have had previous children removed from their care, shouldn’t be allowed onto this type of programme. But, why should the children suffer? These types of programmes give the best start for babies born in prison.
@anneascales21173 жыл бұрын
@@TheGeographyWatch That first part isn’t necessarily true. A kid can be taken away of from their biological mom as a newborn and grow up into a healthy adult if they are adopted by decent people. It happens all the time. It would be better for them than being raised by criminals and addicts.
@TheGeographyWatch3 жыл бұрын
@@anneascales2117 Fine, but that’s rare as most kids do have the father or some relatives who are able to look after them. In that case, the mother being absent and the child not being able to form an attachment with them could cause issues in later life

@@anneascales2117 For me, it depends on the crime. I agree with the staff in this documentary who don’t allow violent offenders to participate in this programme. However, a lot of non-violent crimes, whilst terrible, do not determine how well someone may raise a child. In every pregnancy right up toward the end I think most, if not all moms get really anxious and impatient for the impending birth. I know I was but I had complications in all 3 births but thankfully healthy kids. It’s a whole lot of anticipation with a nice coating of being uncomfortable no matter what you do. I had my oldest deciding to come out a week early, my son induced due my gallbladder going bad and having massive and lengthy gall attacks. (They we’re afraid my liver would start to fail again) and he was born 10 days early. Then my youngest decided to be a week late, apparently she wasn’t done yet and another induction. It’s difficult to tell which of these moms will stay on the straight and narrow but I think this wee ones program is a good thing. That initial bond with your baby is crucial.
