Everyone had their own way of finding the form. I would have preferred it be less scratchy in the sound. Wonderful demo. What I find really interesting is the artist never erased. Or blurred until he started finishing the nose. I would like to what know the charcoal and paper he is using.

Is it possible to take a not quite ideal portrait photo reference and add interesting shadow lines to create a more interesting reference, either with software tools or your imagination? Or perhaps with AI these days?

Ideally it would have more contrast and better or more interesting shadow patterns. It seems difficult to teach something online. There is no quick or easy way. Repetition and constant practice are the best methods. There are many videos from better artists than me. I think the best way is to practice consistently, step by step, starting from the basics.😅

The reference is a drowning not a picture. He isn't using a picture as a reference but a drawing and you are able to see it in the video
