I get it. Lived in Boston as well but I wonder why not the same energy for da baby? Why was Matt not asked to apologize or lose work? I notice how LGBTQ is soft on Matt Damon for his admitted comments but not for other non A listers. The media has a way of telling us who we should demonize and who we should leave alone. It's wicked lame.

@@08billw the difference being, Matt Damon was talking about his past and DaBaby is wildly ignorant today. He is a grown man, today, in "modern time". That dude is a train wreck. He needs to do better if he ever wants to be a crossover artist. I came up this these ideas on my own. If you watch what DaBaby does . . . You don't need the media to form an opinion. I can't speak for the LGBTQ community tho.

I haven't always agreed with Bill Maher's opinions, but one thing I like about him is he seems to at least strive for the truth, which is more than I can say for a lot of TV political commentators. Matt Damon was on the Hot Wings challenge on KZbin and had such an honest answer to the question why doesn't hollywood make good movies anymore. He simply stated that streaming services killed DVD sales and without that 2nd wave of profits movies could count on, the studios are even less likely to take risks. It was a straightforward answer that made complete sense without blaming a pandemic.
@proof.17films
@proof.17films Жыл бұрын
Damon is wrong on that count. Films from original screenplays are being released in theaters and on streaming every year; that's fact, not opinion. Great films, whether original or adapted, are released every year by Hollywood yet many of them aren't being seen enough due to the minority of mass appeal blockbusters like the Marvel films. Original films deserve support and to not be stigmatized by labels like "Oscar bait", but cinema has always flourished and up to the present. Hollywood isn't dead.

@@proof.17films For the record, OP did a shitty job saying what Damon was actually talking about. The question was more about why passion projects/slower dialogue heavy movies have taken a backseat to the gaudy, extravagant $100M+ movies, not that they don't exist. His answer is exactly what OP said, and he specifically brings up Behind the Candelabra, which is a very niche audience and was still a $25M budget, but is only ever going to make like $5M maximum on box office, and so DVD was necessary for movies like that one in particular or something like Shawshank Redemption which flopped in theaters but is now considered top 10 all time. It's not that good movies don't exist, it's that the majority of movies are very much copy-paste plotline cliches and stick the "hottest" name you can in the starring role, and you make profit regardless if the movie is good or not. But, I hate ppl saying there are no good movies out there when Parasite, Us, Midsommar, the Menu, Top Gun Mav,...etc came out in the last 3-5 years. There are plenty of good ones, but the market is definitely oversaturated with lazy, money-grabbing nonsense.

It’s not better for the actor though, which is his point. Actor’s job is to blend seamlessly into the role they are playing, and that’s very difficult when there is a spotlight on your personal life for whatever reason...sex life, substance abuse, unpopular political opinions, etc.
@RocStarr913

An actor ultimately is an individual trying to make money like everybody else in this world. It is not their job to be avatars for minority groups. Don’t forget that Ellen DeGeneres came out during a time when that really was still seen as a financial liability and risk and threatened at the time to end her career. The only reason it’s much easier now to be gay in screen entertainment is because streaming has given that industry more options and financial leeway to create entertainment that can attract more niche audiences.

It is also authentically about a younger generation trying to implement higher ideals while not really understanding how normal homophobia was in the 80s. You didn't have to have any opinion about gays to to have been inundated with a homophobic culture and thereby shaped, molded and conditioned to refer to things you are critical of as 'gay' or to use 'faggot' as a casual put down. It was mostly unconscious common parlance, watch Eddy Murphy RAW and you see the casual accepted homophobia is absolutely mainstream. Now transphobia is on the borderline of taboo and mainstream. Though benefitting from previous cultural struggle and advances led by gays, the trans community has yet to escape mainstream vilification. Ideals are well and good but demonizing an entire culture is something both sides do to help them feel more righteous. Matt may be a symbol for both sides, it seems like neither entirely understand the innocence of belonging to a culture with some evil tendencies or cycle of hate renewing itself in the form of people separating into camps that won't communicate well together. Though we advance and there is progress, our root humanity is often unaddressed so old problems take on new forms. Discrediting white male voices is just blowback in a storm of injustice. Imagine a lot of collective trauma would have to be healed before we all started treating each other fairly regardless of superficial excuses not to.
