I was called into the pre-draft back when we still had conscription in Sweden. Physique test, IQ test, physical, interview, the whole shebang. The interview with the recruiter was the final hurdle before going to basic training. The first thing he asks me is "do you want to do this?" I told him "no, not really" and he said "OK, I'll just put you in the reserves then" and sent me home. One of the best days of my life, to be honest.

In the 60's, if you were drafted, you would serve three years but if you volunteered for the draft, you would only serve two years, so I volunteered for the draft, sold all I owned and went for the physical at Fort Ord, California. Recently there had been a meningitis outbreak there and when I took the physical, I was healthy except for glass fragments in my eye, from a car wreck I had been in while in HS. That last group had 18 go through and I was one of the 10 that didn't pass. Maybe the meningitis outbreak had something to do with military decisions. But I was damn glad I didn't have to go to the front lines in Vietnam. But at least I could say I tried. A few years ago in my area I went into a local military center where coffee and desert was to be given. I was asked it I was a veteran and I told them my story and they welcomed me to have goodies with them.

@craigs.6642 one is he said the US didn't start the Ukraine war. On one hand he is right, but if you know anything about the history of Russia following the dismantling of the Berlin Wall and the agreement we made with them in accordance to not allow Nato to expand any further east, which of course was not honored, there's quite a valid argument to made that we provoked them into this war, especially considering the many peace deals Russia was willing to come to the table for before, during, and still currently. Ukraine was willing to sign that first treaty before the war broke out until the US convinced the UK to send Boris Johnson to urge Zelenskyy not to sign. And our media and Corn Pop said over and over again how this incursion was "unprovoked." Now Joe is trying to convince us that Russia won't stop with Ukraine, but will try to keep expanding their territory, lol. All the while we are provoking them even more in a deadly contest that could very well end us all in a nuclear Armageddon. Another thing Maher won't admit is the genocide in Gaza.

When Bill isn't turning everything against Trump, Republicans or Conservatives this show is actually informative and entertaining. Who knew?

Bill should let his guests answer. Instead of speaking over them.

You should have your own talk show. I bet it would be perfect.

If you want a well informed host this is not the show to watch. I think he gets great guests but when he opens his mouth it is often painful. Watch the episode from last season with Krystal Ball and Maher's lack of knowledge becomes painfully apparent.

I can't believe he relies on only mainstream cable tv news hosts and doesn't do any preparatory research via in-depth independent journalists, former military, or academics, where he might actually learn more about the issues and understand nuance, background, history, etc. Seems like having a show about politics would make you curious enough to do these things. I guess he's got enough hubris to just step onto the set and feel that wealth and class are all he needs to be "qualified." But 🤮.

I’m 24 born in 2000. I may not be much but I’d die for this country. This country is all I’ve ever known. I used to travel from state to state with my grandpa and the only good thing i guess he ever showed me is that we live in a beautiful country worth fighting for. Not all of gen z hates our country bill, we’re just a rare breed.

Gen Z don't hate America only the corrupt politicians who rule it. The politicians and the rich who own them are NOT America. Especially all the foreign billionaires like Murdoch who owns Fox News, or Musk who owns Twitter and are using their media power to divide us. People with a bit of brain can see this. Who owns the army? the rich. They send you to war not for the country, but for them. Like Trump said, we should have stolen all Iraq's oil. That's how rich people think. And that's what Halliburton did in Iraq. Use the military to steal another nation's resources. It's what Russia is doing in Ukraine, Israel in Gaze, and you the soldiers are their blind obedient lackeys. Wake the fuk up. In war you are not fighting for your country, You are fighting for the rich robbing the rich of other countries. What do you think WW2 was about? What did Hitler do with all the countries he conquered? Japan the same. Again, Wake the fuk up? War is mass robbery, Patriotism is how the rich manipulate the poor to kill for them. Why does Trump have houses and bank accounts all over the world? And all rich people. What patriots.

You can absolutely adore this country - the majority of the people in it and the Constitution and the natural beauty of the land. But that doesn't mean I would want to go and fight a rich man's war for profit or power. Unfortunately, this country has become an empire with out of control spending on the military, not just our own. Rome was an empire, too, and it died by spending all of its resources on wars and more wars, while the people and the nation struggled, couldn't afford the basics of life, and the infrastructure crumbled. The US ruling class, or the donor class if you will, is all about keeping their war mongering politicians in power, with big money contracts first for the weapons manufacturers and later for the big corporations that rebuild the nations that they demolish. It's a deadly game and it's not sustainable.

I was with Matthews until his Pelosi comment. We live in a representative democracy. How can we tell how well our representatives actually represent us with Pelosi doing what she is celebrated for 1) not bringing a bill to a vote unless she knows it will be passed and 2) writing omnibus bills that are far too big for anyone to tell what's in it without passing it!
