On the 10th Birthday of TSN, John describes what TSN is and why he doesn’t believe it has a future.
John believes that blending OT and IT networks using TSN is not only unworkable but a misguided and dangerous approach to architecting factory floor systems.
It is extremely important in one very important and massive market: autonomous vehicles. Whether the vehicle is operating in driver support mode, semi-automated mode, or fully automated mode, safe operation requires the instantaneous input from many vehicle sensors.
What’s unique about these autonomous vehicle systems, wind turbines, and other similar single domain applications is that the inputs, messaging requirements, and infrastructure components are well-known. These domains are closed systems, where the time and traffic schedules can be defined in advance, and the infrastructure components can be preloaded with the proper configuration. That’s not true of most applications in the broader manufacturing market, where the automation system isn’t predefined and unchanging.
