If a node receives info on the whole network, as Leemon mentioned "in 20 steps a million people know it, in 30 steps a billion people know it", then that seems like a lot of info going through the node. If the network operates at 100,000 transactions a second, then one node would receive 8.64 billion gossips in a day.
