A lathe is great if you have one. I did 3 of mine with a hand drill, its slow but I took my time lots of cutting oil and it worked perfect. Ive done 5 others for buddys and no problems.

This tooling is great. Make sure the inside barrel is sanded clean where the work is going to be done. I like to center head the reamer and tap in a drill press and hold the barrel with a wood clamp that has been drilled to receive the barrel. Hold pressure down on the tool with a center punch that is chucked in the drill press. Turn the tap wrench and use Easy Tap brand fluid and clean burrs out every 1/8". I like to blue the new work area so the oil has a nice sticking surface.

When you Tap the barrel after reaming; is the tread from the top to the end of the reamer; meaning.if I have choke tube with the tread at the top instead of the end and it had the same pitch size tread; will it srew up well in the barrel ?

It depends on the configuration. The majority of chokes are not threaded at the muzzle, the reamer has already cleared that area of the barrel before tapping.

Where is the runout coming from, the 3 jaw chuck or is the reamer bent? it will make the reamed hole larger than desired did you check afterwards to see how much?

Cheap shotgun barrel frequently if not always have the bore off center in the barrel. Note that the reamer is not showing run-out, it is only the barrel that is moving axially.

Looks like the spindle is bent or the 3 jaw has a lot of runout. It could be a reamer, but not likely.

How often should you break the chip when cutting threads? I have seen when cutting smaller threads it is recommended to back off the tap every half to one turn. Seems like it worked out for you, just curious if the difference in diameters is the cause or what. Awesome video though, just what I was looking for!

I break the chip about every thread or two. you are working on a very larger surface area.

It's important to note that you must either cut the barrel back to eliminate to the fixed chokes, or you must ream them out with a separate reamer. The only exception to this is a cylinder bore barrel (no choke). 4drentals.com/measuring-for-screw-in-chokes-shotgun/

Always work on the cheapest part. Its cheaper the order more choke tubes than to work on the barrel.

Keep it slow, mine is about 75 RPM. This is a large diameter tool with a huge cutting surface.

do we real need so many chokes in a gun? a full fixed choke in a hunting gun is enough to do all what other chokes can do as along as your shooting distance is well calculated. also not forgetting the use of the right kind of ammo for your hunt.

Lelouch Vi Britannia a full choked barrel can shoot every shot, no need to worry about a thing. no need for sabot slugs because rifled slugs are there for smooth bores.

There are many reasons why a shooter might choose to have interchangeable chokes. Almost as many reasons as there are shooters. LOL Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors, not because Vanilla is not a good choice, but because some folks want something else. Happy Shooting.

The tooling is piloted to fit the bore. Many people use a drill press or a hand drill motor for this process. Its for a shotgun not a long range rifle. Nobody claimed this was a precision process.
