Some estate pipes have seen some nasty aromatics with their previous owner. If you get a pipe that's been used to smoke Ennerdale flake for 20 years, you'll propably want to remove the cake completely in order to get rid of the perfume ghosts. Also if the cake is damaged or uneven, it's a good idea to remove it completely.

Not the preferred method, and it doesn't hit the bottom of the bowl, but I used a worn out sanding drum on a dremel at high speed, gently swished around the bowl a few times, got a nice even grind down to about 1mm of remaining cake. Worked famously. The key is to use a worn out sanding drum so it doesn't bind or eat away the material too quickly. For the bottom, use a grinding ball or any rounded piece of stiff metal with a sharp edge, I find the bottom is usually good with minimal work.

I really learned a lot from this video, but bi have a couple of questions. one how do you build cake in a new pipe? and the other is i have a couple of briars that seem to be burning the briar just above the draft hole. how to avoid this? and will building cake over that area help save the pipe? thanks

One thing not mentioned...the Senior reamer you used has a secret. It's not like a drill bit. Notice the little hole in the very tip? Run a pipe cleaner through it just half way. Now fold each half to fit, and follow, the channels. Now dip it in your favorite scotch to ream out the stem!

Correct. Works great. I just purchased one.

When you get an estate pipe, it's advised to completely ream your pipe to avoid any nasty ghosting from old or stale cake. Also, if you get a pipe that was smoked by someone who really likes Latakia based blends and you're a fan of anything else, it gets rid of the flavor that tobacco imparts into the cake. It can be the difference between a great find that you love to smoke and an old stale pipe you hate that you spent money on.

To build a cake, simply do not clean the bowl. Just use a pipe cleaner to keep the shank and the stem/bit clean. The bowl is all you really have to ignore. By cleaning the shank, you're also keeping the draft hole clear.

That's a beautiful pipe. What pipe is it exactly?

I'm confused as to why and when to ream a tobacco pipe. I heard it was good to have 1/16 an inch of cake on your pipe. Why would you ream completely, just to have to build the cake back up again?

i'm sorry and i wish i could understand the necessity of all this slowly shaving off and making dust. You never say but exactly HOW i will Ruin my pipe if not super careful, yeah? thanks
@Ckw2009 жыл бұрын
Kevin S. if you go fast you could end up taking away the wood itself, if you're not being careful. being delicate and slow is a pretty good precaution to take here.

yes, i suppose if the inside is somewhat charred, slow is best......in any case i'm not in so big a hurry that i can't be careful about it :)

Call me a heretic, but I totally just used my Barlow pocket knife to clean out the cake. I probably had two or three grams of cake between all my pipes!
