To answer your question, yes, 42 lands is fine, 40-44 with modals is usually a decent amount unless you're playing some aggro build. You really want a better mana base though, namely fetch lands, fabled passage, creature lands (from adventures in the forgotten realm), the black castle, command tower (staple for 2+ color commanders), and cavern of souls

I've been looking for brawl decks that make use of opponent cards. Every game can be fresh when part of what you play comes from the other side. Brawl is a fun format as well. Glad you are branching out!

Also, some mana rocks/dorks are your friends especially for those situations where you're stuck hoping for lands to play the big stuff. There's a lot of ramping in Brawl.
