It's so they can be protectionist with doing this shit as a profession; to protect the jobs of "producers" that spent their time learning all of this overly complex shit. If everyone could make music really easily it would make producers make less money. It's disgusting, just like mechanics, or computer repair, or the law, or anything else that is protectionist like that.

R.L. Jeffries well said. It’s the same for when you ask a friend, who’s been doing this since we were kids, if he can help me with the most basics. He gets me into this one man band format but has no time to help a friend. He went to school for this while I didn’t. Thought I was going to be in a rock band lol. Point is, this person wants to make sure you don’t get ahead of him in any way. Even though he has already put out about 5 full length demo albums since we were 13yrs old. We are now 40. And his music never did blow up anyway. Sure, he may have received royalties, but nothing like all us neighborhood kids originally thought. He’s had a regular job since I could remember. I wish the best for who ever & would always give a helping hand to someone close to me when asked, as long as I can give an answer. Either way, it’s a long way to the top, if you wanna rock’n roll!

Thanks. Was trying to figure out the best way to do this, and I thought I must be doing it wrong because Reaper supports midi and audio in the same track... but that didn't work, so I used this method as a fallback. Looks like the fallback was the correct method all along. ... Edit: Looking into things deeper, it looks like newer versions of Reaper have a cleaner way to do this. It can actually do what I was trying to do originally, which was to keep the midi and audio on the same track as separate takes. It just requires enabling "Monitor track media while recording", to make it actually play the midi data while recording audio. Also requires the user to manually change the input source each time, which is inconvenient... but still easier than using a separate track.
@brettcollums35554 жыл бұрын
Where do you find "monitor track media" in Reaper? Im recording in using a Korg Prologue and need to create midi tracks so I can quantize and sync the arp on my hard synth. Thanks
@ToyKeeper4 жыл бұрын
After trying a few different methods, I'd suggest just keeping midi and audio on separate tracks. Putting them together as separate takes on a single track is ... awkward. So record the midi into one track, edit the midi to sound however you want, then make a second track for the audio. After rendering the midi clip to audio, you should be able to mute the midi track and leave only the audio track enabled.
@DecentralEyes3 жыл бұрын
@@brettcollums3555 Right-click the "Record Arm" button on the mixer track channel you plan on recording to, then select the "Monitor Track Media While Recording" option from the pop-up list. This option lets you hear the audio being recorded as it is being captured.

@moogish4 жыл бұрын
When he mentions turning off local control of synth, I actually bypassed this just to see what would happen using prophet 6. It seams to be working fine either way in Reaper. I recently decided to demo Logic Pro X.5 to compare workflow. From the very start of new project, I found an issue when recording 4 or more midi notes. Last 3 notes are the only audible notes when sent to Logic even though all midi data is printed. But when I playback midi track, all notes are audible when sent back to synth. Then I came back to this vid & remembered to turn off local control. Now when I record 4 + midi notes, no audio disappears. With that said, when exploring other DAW’s, I never expected to run into issues I didn’t have with the first. Clearly every DAW has its own flaws. Now I can’t automate from synth unless I turn local control back on lol.

On some digital pianos you can disable the built in speakers, so the sound only comes out of the line outs or headphone jack. good question
@crhkrebs4 жыл бұрын
@@67lobe Midi can be sent across 16 separate channels. If you only have a few instruments with their own Midi cables then just have everything on channel 1 or “all midi channels”. However, this becomes important if you only have a small Midi device. So you may have only one Midi output and you have 2 Midi synths. Midi output goes into Midi In of synth 1 and Midi Thru of synth 1 goes to Midi In of synth 2. If you have everything set to Midi channel 1 then both synths will play the identical midi data. You may not want that. Therefore, have synth 2 on Midi channel 2. Set the Midi track to Midi channel 2 and that track’s Midi info will be ignored by synth 1 (set to receive on Midi channel 1) and will only be played by synth 2. Some people daisy chain 3 to 4 synths in this way. Midi is only a serial data stream so this is not recommended due to delays.

Sorry a very late reply, and you may have solved it in the meantime. You get Midi levels in the Midi track and that is good. However, you have to tell Reaper where to send the Midi data. That is in Routing-Midi Hardware output. The Midi outputs that you selected in Preferences will show up here. Then you make a second track, which is your audio track. Record arm this track and select either mono or stereo inputs corresponding to your synths connections.

One way is to double click on the midi item in the track to take you into the midi event editor. Down at the bottom left there's a dropdown. You can set it to, e.g. Bank/Program Select, then double click in the grey area (you might need to drag the bottom of the piano roll area up a bit) and insert the type of control change you want, at the point you want. Is that the sort of thing you were looking for?

I'm using REAPER and I can't seem to get this to work with my synth, but that's not the focus of my comment. I'm sure I'll get it, but I have a question on why a person would need to record this way? Not meaning to be dense, but can anyone explain the advantages of recording the midi data first and then the audio track from the midi, versus just recording the synth via audio without the midi? What I see here, and in other videos, is essentially a process of laying down an audio track, but with the addition of a midi track first. So....if the idea is to create an audio track, why not just record the audio? I'm not asking this to be a prick, but as a complete midi newbie that started down this midi rabbit hole a week or so ago after only recording via the audio outputs of my synth for the past couple of years or so. I'm a simple home recording person that records their own music for fun, hobby, tinkering, etc. No live performing or any of that. I retired a handful of years ago and had always wanted to get into synths and purchased a Korg Kronos to cut my teeth on. I've used it to learn to create sounds, drum tracks, recording...etc. I compose my own music with my Korg running the audio outputs to my audio interface. The audio interface is then plugged into the computer via USB and my monitors connect to the output of the audio interface. When I'm ready to record I arm a track, hit record, play the piece for the track, then repeat the process for however many tracks a piece of music needs. If it's a complex piece then I record the tracks to the built in sequencer on the Kronos first, edit and quantize the tracks, then record the tracks into my daw. So, is it a case of a synth not having a built in sequencer, in which case you record the midi into the daw so the software can quantize and edit the midi data before laying down the audio track itself?

2 MIDI cables and 2 audio cables (if it's a stereo synth), yes. The MIDI cables usually can be replaced by a simple USB connection on more recent hardware synths, but the audio is NEVER sent over USB, always through the audio outputs on your synth. The USB is only there for midi (and updating firmware, importing/exporting presets, etc...)

actually the reason why i love reaper, is, that you can use only one track for audio _and_ midi. i hate having to use two tracks for a hardware synth - in reaper you can only use one track for both, which is what i massively prefer.

dumb question: how come the MIDI needs to be sent out as well as in? say if i had a Roland Integra 7 (not that i do, but i can dream) and i wanted to use a MIDI keyboard with it, how would i set it up then?
@blackbke4 жыл бұрын
Basically you want your DAW to control your synth, not the synth itself. So you send MIDI from the synth to the interface MIDI IN, then it gets read by the DAW so it can write all the MIDI data on a track. And then the MIDI data on that track is being sent from the DAW to the interface MIDI OUT, which goes to the synth's MIDI IN. At that point the synth is actually producing sound, which it sends through the audio cables into the interface audio in(s), which is then send to the DAW, which writes the audio to an audio track. Herein lies the reason why your synth's local control should be disabled: if not, you get the whole proces described above, PLUS the synth itself locally producing audio when you trigger its keyboard, effectively producing the same sound twice. You can of course keep local control on and just send the audio to your DAW. The downside is that you don't have MIDI, and you cannot correct anything if you played it wrong. Connecting a MIDI keyboard to a synth can be done by connecting the synth to your interface (midi cables, audio cables), and then connecting an additional midi cable from your midi keyboard MIDI OUT to the synths MIDI PASSTHROUGH. It's quite a lot to get your head around. Just follow the process step by step. You'll get it eventually.

Enabling them makes them selectable in the dropdown. Enable it if you want to use it. You don't have to "disable" It for any optimizations. Enabling multiple ports shouldn't fuck anything up or slow anything down at all. The same options are in the outputs because you have matching pairs of in and out ports. That's a good thing. Cheers!

How did you set it up with only the usb cable adapter?

the video is exact what I am looking for, anyways I hear my synth but I cannot reproduce routing the wave audio of the Synth on reaper. I think this works only in combination with an external audio interface... I just plugged my microbrute via USB to my DAW, well most things work but as I told there is missing that routing part. Would have been cool if you show not only perfect video but also simple videos that show what is possible, if you do not use an audio interface, that would be my suggestion ;.)

I'm trying to wrap my head around the midi and audio tracks, does the synth output to both midi and line input (XLR / 1/4") on two different sound card / audio interfaces?? What are the benefits of doing this? Midi for effects and Audio analog for actual synth sound? This is my best guess... much appreciated!

Basically you use your synthesizer as a midi keyboard: it sends MIDI data to your DAW. But to generate audio the DAW should send that MIDI data back to your synthesizer. At that point the synth produces audio, which it sends to the interface inputs, which is read by the DAW and written as audio in a track. The main benefit of doing this is to be able to correct mistakes: you can edit the midi and then write corrected audio. Sending audio directly through the DAW without any MIDI data passing in and out is possible, but you better play it right the first time then (or redo it a few times). So yes, the synth sends both midi and audio to the interface, but it happens in a specific order: synth -> midi -> interface -> midi track in daw -> midi -> interface -> synth -> audio -> interface -> audio track in daw. Most interfaces have audio inputs ánd midi inputs, so it's only one device and not two as in this video.

@@blackbke thanks for getting back to me and clarifying and explaining how it works. I ended up talking to a friend that have me some of this info and it all clicked!! I haven't spent much time in using Reaper but now understand the setup required so it will be easier next time I want to play/record etc Now I would like to get more info on using my audio interface and Reaper for looping ... Any help is much appreciated!

Please help lol: I've been using reaper with vsti's. Now I bought a Roland Boutique D05 (without keys). I want to play my akai keyboard controller with the sounds of the D05 into reaper. I'm not getting anything through my speakers but midi is recorded (and on playback the sound plays through the D05 preview speaker). The D05 is connected using only a usb cable (which is meant to do everything) Can this work? thankyou

noob question. Using DSI mopho x4. I have taken all the steps and after I set up the audio track (yes, even after making sure everything is connected to the mopho) audio from the computer mic comes up instead. I am very lost if someone can help me, haha

have the same problem, did you solve it?

I have learned the answer but have not tried to implement it yet. What's missing is an audio interface that would go from synth to computer. They're kinda pricey so still doing research/saving/etc

Hi, Kenny! I hope you can help me with one issue. I connetcted hardware synth via MIDI in Reaper like you did in this video. So, basically I'm recording MIDI signal first with monitoring only on the main synth inputs, then quantize the notes and then I'm recording an audio signal given by the notes I recorder earlier. I'm using an arpeggiator synchronized with DAW tempo, but on start of some sections of the song it plays just the single note, while the MIDI signal has solid four beat note and arpeggiator is still on. The other three bars in the section being played and recorded normally. What it can be, what's the problem?
