Do you know if this was a rear end equipped with G80 (posi)? I’m probably going to need to remove an axle soon on my Silverado and am just curious if this is a posi unit, or if I will encounter extra material/steps when removing mine. Thanks!

I know this is 2 years old now, but I have a question I hope can be answered on here.. Can you take a Z71 locker (the G80 I think it is?) and put it in your non locker like the one you have shown us in this video? Great info in this video also, thank you.

Yes but I would just put a posi in instead of the g80

Can I ask why are you doing this.? I have a 2007 classic and just had it serviced to rid all Squeaks and raddles u joints ball joints etc… upon picking it up it was making a noise similar to bad u joints the mechanic put it back up on the lift and showed me there is a little bit of play when he pushed in and out on either wheel (picturing in my mind that retainer c clip is worn out) so my question is what would be worn out to cause the play.? The mechanic said eventually I need a whole new rear end, truck does have 320k 4x4. I’m wondering if I replaced the axles and the hardware that hold them in place if that would fix my rotational slight clanking. It’s not bad now you have to listen closely for it

There's gonna be a tiny bit of in/out because the end of the axle against the pin. Usually there's a tiny bit of up down movement even with new bearings. TINY not sloppy.

where do i find an exact rear axle shaft replacement? I have an 05 gmc sierra 1500 with 323 gears and the axles are 30 splines
@megatonesilva65462 жыл бұрын
If you need JUST the axle shaft, you can use any SIX LUG axle shaft from 1999-2006 Suburban, Tahoe, Avalanche, Silverado, Sierra, Escalade, etc. Drivers or passenger side axle shafts are the same......however, if you need a complete axle assembly, you will need to use 2004-2006 axle assembly from a truck with 3.23 gears (which is RPO Code GU5 as labeled on the sticker in the glove box. As importantly as the gear ratio is, you also need to make sure the axle assembly has the same brakes on it. There are four different types of brake options on these axle assemblies. The brake options are: Dual piston disk Single piston disk. 17 inch drum and another size (inch) drum. Though I don't recall what that other drum size is at the moment. All that being said, your truck being the GMC Sierra 1500 model, it more than likely has the 17 in drums on it. You can determine if this is true for your truck if you see RPO Code JF3 on the glove box sticker label. JF3 denotes 17 inch drum brake option. GU5 denotes 3.23 gear ratio option.....and more info, RPO Code G80 denotes Limited Slip differential. Additionally, if you need a compete axle assembly and can not find one for your 2005 truck within the years 2004-2006, you can use a 1999-2003 axle assembly BUT you will have to install your rear brake components onto the 1999-2003 axle assembly as the 1999-2003 axle assemblies come with disk brakes only. Obviously, you'll want to make sure any of these earlier axle assemblies have 3.23 gears in them (RPO Code GU5).

......one other thing, that retainer bolt which holds the center pin in place is originally installed with a thread locking compound. It's not necessarily tight, but it is locked in place. It takes great force to break it loose. This being the case DO NOT try to remove that bolt with a 12 point socket or 12 point wrench. If you do, the bolt head might strip and if it strips you'll never get it out of there. It is better to use a 6-point socket or a 6-point wrench. Whichever tool you choose to use the size will need to be 8mm..... And if you choose to use a socket, you will need to use 1/4 inch drive ratchet/socket as there is very little room to access that bolt using physically larger 3/8 inch drive tools. And once you get that center pin out DO NOT rotate either of the axles nor the drive shaft. If you do, the two smaller "spider gears" and their shims will fall out. You'll have a hell of a time reinstalling those pieces getting everything lined up again.

Is there a measurement I need to know when installing a new c clip and axle? I was told by someone that there is a measurement between the end of the axle to the pinion shaft.

Hey brother, are you for hire on jobs like this & if so are u actually from around the Pittsburgh area? I see your jack stand says Pgh on it and I'm from the Northside. I have a 2000 Silverado with some kind of problem coming from this area (differential) ... The entire truck is knocking and jumping when I turn the wheel, while in motion, and I'm looking for someone to check it out! Thanks

How do you put the gears back in they fell out when i wzs removing my axel
@hotrodray680211 ай бұрын
Through the big hole. Put the axle gears on , then roll one spider in at a time and insert the shaft. You'll have to try several times to get the two shaft gears timed with the axle gears. Keep trying. Be patient.

My axle won’t push in that far to release the clip, any advice? I tried pushing and even tapping it with a hammer.

I assume you removed the pin inside the diff that keeps it from moving?

I had that on one side also. I had somebody bump the axle hub as I worked the c clip. It was pretty snug going in too.
