Finally! I show some of the internals of the rear brake caliper for a 84 through 87 Pontiac Fiero, and some tips and tricks that I've learned along the way.
Is this video in any serious depth? No, it's not. I did want to be able to show what the insides look like, and briefly some things to avoid. Do with this knowledge, what you will.

Thank you for making this video, it helps a lot. I wish you made a video on how you installed the spring inside the piston.

it's ridiculously simple - you just push it in. The "complicated" part is that the spring has tension and wants to push back. You just can't let it win. on another - but related - note, after this video was made, I had the opportunity to press the piston back in on another Fiero caliper. I've read about the theory many times, but never put it into practice. I've not seen another video on how that's done. Since I still have the caliper in the above video not installed on a vehicle, I should follow up on that procedure. You don't "turn it in" though many people will tell you that.

Grrat video very well done. How exactly do you get the piston back in without disassembling the whole thing?

@@mikeing3924 Assuming that the assembly is mechanically sound, first you put on a piston press, so that when you remove the nut from the back it doesn't fly apart. The spring on the back will have to be removed because you're also removing the actuator arm. Then, you use the press to gently guide the piston back into the caliper. The first time I did it the piston rotated in the caliper shell. With some practice, I was able to get the whole assembly realigned properly. The notches on the piston need to align with the tabs on the brake pads. It's a terrible design, that's why you don't see this specific method on new vehicles. Maintenance is a bear.

I installed one but I think that the tensioner is to strong. Water pump bearing doesn't like to much tension. So I put Rodney dickman bracket and much happier car. I own a 87gt

interesting. I guess we'll have to see how my Fiero handles the assembly long term. Haven't posted the video of the installation yet because I misplaced the camera in a move. Ugh.
