I invested a whole lot of money into the Reason ecosystem for each and every update of the perpetual license and each and every rack extension be it from Reason Studios or from 3rd party developers. With the constant pressure of pushing people towards the subscription based model, Reason 12 was the last time I payed for an update. With the release of Reason 13 I left this train not willing to support this business model anymore. I do this with a heavy heart because Reason was always my weapon of choice but I can no longer justify spending money for a product where I no longer agree with the product strategy of the company. Thanks Jef for doing this video.

@@LossLeadas Raising the price of a perpetual license to $500 and upgrade price to $200 was done to ruin the value of a perpetual license against just paying $20 a month to sub. Not giving perp.lic buyers the same rack devices and players that subs get so they have to buy them separately at full price if they want them. And subs get all of the soundpacks and content, which buyers don't get. I don't think that's how you should treat your loyal customers.

@@LossLeadas Dude, if you want to hand them $240 a year and then lose access to your DAW the first month you don't pony up the $20 rent, be my guest. This idea of constantly paying out but never owning anything is BS. Clearly Reason favors it's renters over it's owners, and that is what I'm objecting to.

You, along with other music production “reviewers”, provide a great service to this community. You deserve all the perks that you can get. The same people that accuse you of being “sold” for a few dollars would probably never give you a penny for your work, yet they benefit greatly from it. That is a sense of entitlement that I simply cannot understand. Your videos are full of useful information that allow us to make difficult decisions. Thank you for the time that you put in to develop this content. Please DO NOT turn down the small perks that you can get because of some hypercritical and ungrateful KZbin consumers. As far as Reason+, it may not be a bad idea for me. I already own everything from Native Instruments and Arturia, so I don’t NEED another suite of instruments, yet this looks really cool. I would mind noodling with it for a month, from time to time. 👍

The sticker shock of $199 for the upgrade did me in. I may wait till the newness factor of the release subsides and they have a Black Friday special and drop the price. That Polytone synth though was sweet. But then so are the 100 others I have that do the same thing.

Jef, you're DEFINITELY not a shill. Thank you SO MUCH for all of the amazing work you've done for us. Reason Studios is heading dangerously close to the direction AVID/Protools went. They are behind in their offerings yet believe that they are somehow entitled to subscriptions while very vague regarding their languages on offerings. Reason Studios has always been a relatively cool solution. HOWEVER, I (and likely many others) are exhausted by having to parse through all of the "offerings" details, as though we are contracts attorneys who love to subject ourselves to punishing & exhaustive reading, to assure we aren't getting screwed over. If they don't want to provide us what is current when we purchase the perpetual license... then I refuse to buy it. Therefore, they'll get NO money from many of us... which they seem to disregard. Somehow so much focus is on repetitive payments, that they are blinding themselves toward 1x payments. And that's ok. They don't want my money... then I won't force them to take it. Thank again, for ALL you do for us.

It's times like this when GAS pays off in the long run. That impulse buy I did getting Reason 11 suite during covid was the best Reason purchase I made so far. What's stopping me from getting R13 atm is the upgrade price. I only pay $100 or even less during the summer sale for Cubase. I also bought Friktion and couple other things during sales for only $50. I just hate that they charge way too much now to upgrade the perpetual license, which I think psychologically, they are trying to get you to subscribe since that’s where the actual money is. It was $130 for the upgrades to perpetual license for years. Then all of a sudden they go from $130 all the way to $200. It’s not worth it. I could understand $150 but $200 is ridiculous. So like I did last time 12 is when they upped the price to $200 I will wait for a sale.

I think the point here is that many people have invested for years into the Reason ecosystem, buying Rack Extensions and version upgrades and feel like Reason Studios will eventually try to go subscription only, leaving those behind who are already invested. Also, the upgrade price of $199 (US) is way to steep for what they're offering, when it used to be $129 iirc. So, unless you've already accumulated a lot of extensions, the upgrade is not worth it at all. It does become cheaper however if you skip a version (or a few) and then upgrade. I'm still on 11 suite and will wait till v14 to upgrade (unless they offer a discount).

I don’t think most people realize how little money there is to be made from KZbin videos for the vast majority of creators. If one would calculate it as an hourly wage, it would be minuscule. So without getting free stuff, many creators probably wouldn’t be able to afford to get the stuff they showcase or review. An added complexity is, when creators get a fully loaded deluxe version of a product, and often have to make their videos before the official release. So they may not have easy access to knowing what is not included in lesser versions. Or even what the final prices are. So KZbin creators/influencers as well as their viewers are a bit between a rock and a hard place in trying to figure out, if something is worth their money.

Thanks for the vids Jef. My 2 cents on the whole thing, which to be fair I've not paid much attention to because I stopped caring about Reason a while ago. I've been a user/owner since version 2 till 11 and for me it's just not super relevant anymore. Yes there's lots of cool stuff there and all that but any company effectively forcing their customers to sign up for a "pay us monthly and own nothing" model is instantly invisible to me. Subscriptions just suck, nobody likes them, they only benefit the company and everyone knows why they are doing it and it feels dirty and greedy. Why destroy your brand forcing customers to do things they don't want to? Makes zero sense whatsoever. It's clear these companies don't give a damn about their customers and only care about boosting company valuation to make it an appealing sell. Fake!! I'm a Live and Bitwig user. I'm not a fan of the yearly update plan that Bitwig does but it's better than a standard subscription. If either of those DAWs move to sub only I'll just move to another DAW or go 100% DAWless again. I personally just won't do the sub thing ever, don't care how good the software is.

I paid for a year of Reason Plus. As soon as you cancel, you lose access to all of the combinators that you download through the subscription. You also can’t open songs that you made with the latest version of reason with your older version. So you pay for a year but then get nothing in return. It would be better if they let you keep the sound packs or if they had some type of rent to own model that credits you towards the full license.

The reality is: The moment you even mention anything that is even remotely "subscription" adjacent, there will be a certain subgroup of internet rage posters that will come out of the woodwork to just crap on any video that's out there. It happens. EVERY. TIME. Like, you can time a watch to it. No one is forcing anyone to sub up to a service. And it isn't shilling for creators to make sponsored content...the entire platform of KZbin is based on sponsored-content. There are adds literally everywhere. Posters who vice signal about sponsored content being "shilling" are naive to the ecosystem they are in.

There is a comparison page linked when you select "What do I get when I upgrade to Reason 13?" in the FAQ that lists what's included in Reason 6 to 12, Reason 13 and Reason+, but it's not VERY easy to find from the home page. My issue with the subscription is there is only one option. I think many more long-time users would consider subscribing if there was a cheaper option that includes everything except sound packs, which could be available separately allowing you to buy only whichever ones you want. The cost of the subscription, for the first time you subscribe at least, should also be discounted by various amounts based on which devices you have already paid for separately. In terms of what's new in 13, I think there's been too much emphasis on new devices in recent releases and not enough new or improved features. I'm still undecided about upgrading, though that's partly because I'm not making music full time. I've used Reason because I prefer its visual style to DAWs where everything looks exactly the same. But I don't enjoy editing in it. They really need to bring Reason up to par with other DAWs if they want to regain market share. It's a shame they're sticking so steadfastly (unreasonably?) to what many users say is a bad business model. And not offering the same 20pc off upgrades for a limited time gives a clear message to perpetual users just how much we mean to them.

Problem with the subscription is that they don't release instruments or devices enough to justify it. When they released Reason 11 Suite back when, I bought it, and I bought Friktion and most of the other REs. I'm on Reason 12 now. So other than the instrument and the delay in Reason 13, the only thing I don't have is Objekt. I might buy Objekt. I'm gonna skip Reason 13 and catch up with it' when it's a more valuable offer. Reason+ only makes sense if you didn't buy perpetual licenses for years and don't have most of what they offer in the subscription.

In 2022 I bought Reason+ for a year for $99 on their black Friday sale. My goal was to subscribe to Reason + for a year and see if I wanted to buy it because subscribing to a DAW is not acceptable for me as you have to maintain a subscription to open your old projects even if you decide to switch to another daw in the future. And when I saw everything that wasn’t part of Reason 12 and had to be bought separately I stopped using it because $500 for the base software plus all the extras I wanted would have cost me almost $900. And even at that price you don’t have everything you have on Reason +. This makes Reason way too expensive for what it is if you choose the perpetual license. The same things go for plugin subscriptions, I don’t like it. The only subscription I have is for samples libraries because if you unsubscribe, you still have access to the samples you downloaded, you don’t have to maintain a valid subscription to open your old projects. A subscription for a DAW is moronic IMO because all your music is in a format that requires a subscription for you to have access to. With plugins, you can still open your project and with a little work you can replace the plugins you no longer have access to. But with the daw itself you are fucked if you want to unsubscribe.

Just a thought...I own Cubase and Bitwig. I have owned (or had early 2000's warez versions of) Logic, Reason, Reaper, the ubiquitous free version of Live we all get at some point (and if I'm REALLY dating myself, Cool Edit). What do folks in this dialogue think is this best DAW for innovating/creating something (relatively) completely original? What I mean is, at some point, most of these DAWs get the same functionality. Which one makes you (the folks in the thread) feel the most liberated to make something weird that you have in your head? We can throw Protools out the window, as it is great for multitrack recording and comping, but is pretty limited in its patching and devices. The knee-jerk answer for me would be Bitwig, but Reasons interface was an early winner, back in the day. Have not used Reason for over a decade, so maybe it still offers something that (either its interface or upgrades) could be cool....just trolling for input. Sorry that I did not include FFL Studio...to steep of a learning curve for me at this point.

@@jefgibbons If you have (as if, anyone doen't) a version of Live, it is a similar metaphor to Live. You probably know the story....made by former Live developers, but Bitwig goes WAY deeper into modularity. I don't think Bitwig gets the same love from Max MSP, BUT Bitwig can run on Linux....which opens it up to being the basis of a hardware device. The Torso S4, Zynthian and others that run off of a stock Raspberry Pi. The MPC LIVE (insert version) and Maschine +, as you have noted, run off an SBC (a more powerful Raspberry Pi....for those of you following this dialogue). The point of my long-winded response is that you can potentially turn Bitwig into a hardware-esque device....without paying the Push 3 prices. IF you wanna get into the weeds of Linux and a "Terminal Programming" thing, to make music. That...and Bitwig is just awesome. Still use Cubase though. The two cover a LOT of ground.

I'm just of the mindset that if I pay for something, provided I comply with all of the licensing rules about number of activations....actually activating (as some....don't). I want to pay and go. If I choose to interact with the company again for any reason, that's to be seen. But I don't like the fact that in my Reasons 11, I've purchased plugins from them that I can't get access to unless I log into their servers. This is plug-ins that I purchased outside of a subscription. I still have to log in. If I don't, I can't use it. Access to those plug-ins is deactivated. There used to be a authentication software that used to authenticate your reasons without it being connected to the internet. They took that out as well. That's a big no no for me. Purchased two used pieces of Arturia gear. I get ALL the software that it comes with like I purchased it new. Let me register without an issue and got a ton of vst's and ableton lite. I tried to dislike Arturia. But when someone is too nice, you kinda look like a jerk if you keep disliking them.

Arturia does great discounts for loyal users, even better is the free updates and continued updates to older hardware products they could easily charge for. They show it’s easy to make a loyal customer!

The subscription model of software is BS. One time fee is all it should ever be.

I'm tired of the subscription BS companies trying to push on users! Too many subscriptions and all are designed for a single purpose: to milk more money out of customers! Subscribers more often than not will forget to cancel subscriptions in time when they don't need them and that's one of the main takes of why companies convert to subscriptions! The whole charade with the devices you're not getting on a perpetually paid upgrade evaded my since I have these REs already but that looks like a very scummy way of getting users to switch to subscription! Shame on you RS!

They are way too precious with their walled garden with buy or subscription-in the Reason DAW at a minimum. Even if you just want to use their devices as a plugin in another DAW you still need to pay for Reason. There's money to be made if they would sell their devices outside that requirement.

Sorry for those negative Reason guys. I have no clue why there is so much negativity around Reason 13. It has been the best upgrade ever and Reason is totally awesome if you got the subscription. BTW, please make some content for Scenic. Native Instruments Play series is basically all just one single plugin where you can mix two samples from a to b. With Scenic you have the same and more functionality, but you can use your own samples. So you got an unending supply of your own Play Series instruments without having to pay NI.
