Over worked, big time under paid, Barely any breaks if your lucky to eat, you are the slave literally. Almost EVERY clinic is like this. They don’t follow working labour standards and get away with it for barely giving you a break to eat. Dental assistants NEED TO BE UNIONIZED so we legally get breaks and proper training.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that's your experience. The clinic I work for has a great schedule, I work 10 hours, 4 days a week, no weekends, no nights, no holidays, we have 1 hour breaks to eat, and I don't feel overworked, it can be hard sometimes, but every job is. Good luck to you if you're still in the field finding something better.

I worked as a medical assistant for many years and now I'm an allied health instructor. I am certified as a medical assistant through the AAMA. I got my associates, my bachelor's, and also got my credentials to be a teacher. I make about 60K a year... But I would tell people to just go to school to be an RN if you're able to because the pay is just better all around. I'm literally signing up for a fast track nursing program now... And I'm 36...I wish I would've just done nursing school. 😂

A front desk/MA turned to me and said, "Go turn on the coffee pot." as if this was an every day normal duty. I was stupefied. I went and turned it on. It was a couple hours later that I noticed the lead doctor used the coffee maker to have a cup. (Single use that takes 1 minute to heat up....) but I guess the part that shocks me most is that she commands me to go to lunch, punch out at the end of the day and is not my boss and is nearly half my age.

Yep, this is why my experience as a MA has not been great. I don’t mind the duties for the position but all of the other stuff ESPECIALLY when it’s like they’re barking orders and not even in position to have that authority. Sometimes the providers aren’t any better so I’m wondering hard if Nursing would be a better fit??

I’ve been at it for almost a year and I’m so miserable. Overworked, underpaid, under appreciated. Doctors are so difficult to work with because they have this air about them. Patients are angry all the time. Patient messages are never taken properly, leaving the work for the back. I really want to leave but I don’t know what to do next…

@manic8045
@manic8045 8 ай бұрын
I’d like to kindly leave my experience 👀🙂 I have always been shy and kids called me antisocial but only liked talking to people I knew already or only when someone would speak to me first. Even a compliment would turn me red and speechless 😂 I went to the college for the 9month program. The instructors and classmates can be friendly. Some not so much. I think if you are good with your grades and studies, being reserved in the classroom might not be so bad if you show that you’re learning. But mine always encouraged me to be more open and sociable. Then I went on my externship. If I made at mistake, the doctors said that I was a student, and informed his staff to help train me properly. His words were “In here, she’s a student. It’s ok to make mistakes here but out there, you can’t make mistakes”. They were good doctors and a nice enough staff. He was encouraging in his own way, but I did try to not make many mistakes. Passed my exam and am a CCMA. After graduation I got my first job. My old manager, I’m forever grateful for because she took a chance on me. I tell people that I am listening to them, just that my eye contact will drift. She said it out front in our interview that “no one will hire you” and she was right because I was looking at her then my eyes would glance around the wall and table. But she gave me my first chance and I’ve went a long way. I was still shy, but built rapport with patients and made sure to be friendly with them also. If they weren’t in the mood for friendliness I just stayed professional. I started off crazy shy and kind of a pushover , but I was a good employee. It took time, but I’ve stood up for myself in certain situations. I’ve become more blunt because unfortunately, working with mainly women (in my case) of all ages, there will be tons of drama and cattiness. Some people see the job as just a paycheck. I didn’t, which is why I loved doing the work I did. But unfortunately I was told many times that I care too much. Because I’m sensitive, I did care a lot. I wanted to be good at what I did is all, I just let my mistakes get the best of me. The work environment will be stressful at times. You have to stay calm and professional when dealing with difficult patients. But in school they always remind you that some patients might just be having a bad day because they are in pain and not to take it personally. Coworkers are a hit or miss. I’ve made great friends, and some others I just didn’t want to speak to at all unless the job called for it. I was also nervous about doing blood draws or injections. But I like doing them now. Also there are some specialties where you won’t have to do those. I worked in Gastroenterology so I didn’t do any bloodwork or injections. Sorry for just telling you my whole story 👀 I wanted to follow in my sisters footsteps and have a job that makes a difference and to help people. Mainly because I was still figuring out what I wanted to do with my life. And this was a stepping stone. As a reserved person…I had a lot of learning to do. Had to come out of my shell I guess, and I love talking with patients because some are really nice. Even just a smile turns their mood around. A woman once told me that she was glad that I was nice to her compared to a coworker. Also when it comes to money, we start out slow. How our teachers explained it back in 2019 was we’d make minimum wage and a guy said “So Jack in the Box is making more than me?”. She told us it takes time and experience. I sold my self short when my old manager asked what I was looking to make, I said $12 and she laughed and goes “You said 12, I’m gonna give you $12” 😅 But when I was doing the paperwork it said $13 but I actually started out at $14. So I went from making $14 to $20 an hour. Money will come with time, but I loved it more so for the life experience it taught me. And I stick up for myself now too. I guess the internet won’t have a for sure answer to give. Maybe others can give advice and it will help? It’s more so what you want to do. The one thing they always told us what to be friendly because we’re the first people that patients interact with before they see the providers. At times I considered it toxic because during some days, I wanted to cry and quit and just forget about being a Medical Assistant altogether. But I realized that I love the work even though it’s tiring and some people just make the work place difficult. It offers growth though 😊
